TEAM SPORTS (Volleyball)
o Skills in Volleyball
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:
1. Differentiate the different kinds of skills in volleyball.
2. Identify the different service in volleyball.
3. Demonstrate the proper way of different kinds of skills in volleyball.
4. Participate actively.
FIVE BASIC SKILLS USED IN VOLLEYBALL
1. SERVE OR SERVICE
A serve is used to put the ball into play or games to start the rally. The serve is
the only skill controlled solely by one player. Advanced players take advantage of this fact
by developing their serving skills.
Six different kinds of serve
Underhand Serve
The player hold the ball in the hand in front opposite from the hitting hand. Hold
the ball below the waist and above the knee so that the server is in a good position to
get the ball over the net.
Sidearm Serve
The player hold the ball in the hand of their side opposite from the hitting hand.
Hold the ball below the waist and above the knee so that the server is in a good position
to get the ball over the net.
Overhead/Overhand Service
An overhand serve in volleyball is a serve in which the player tosses the ball with
one hand and strikes it in the air above their head with the other hand.
Float serve
Floater. A float serve or a floater is a serve that does not spin. ... A float
serve catches the air and can move unexpectedly to the right or the left or it can drop
suddenly. To hit a floater, you make contact in front of your body with your hand hitting
behind the middle of the ball.
Jump Float Service
It is a type of serve that a player performs in volleyball when the serving player
performs a small jump or hop and hits the ball in such a way that causes the ball to have
little to no-spin on it.
Jump Serve
It is an advanced volleyball serve where the ball is thrown into the air and the
player makes contact with it by jumping and hitting it in midair.
2. RECEIVED/DIG PASS
It is called 'passing'. It's the action of receiving the ball after a serve. This can be
with your hands (overhead reception) or with your platform.
The player performs a pass when s/he hits the ball around the torso level - with
forearms of the straightened arms. The player moves arms unattached under the
approaching ball, stops and takes a well-balanced and low passing position.
3. SETTING/TOSS
The "set" is an overhead pass used to change the direction of the dig and put the
ball in a good position for the spiker. It is usually the team's second contact. Setting is the
tactical centre of Volleyball. A setter must be good enough to keep the big blockers from
dominating the net.
4. SPIKE/ATTACK
It is the strategy used to send the ball over the net to the opponent in such a
manner that ball is not returnable. The spike is performed by moving the arm in a way
such that you angle the ball to land on the ground of your opponent's side of the court.
5. BLOCK/BLOCKING
It is defined as deflecting the ball coming from your opponent's attack hit.
It is a skill in volleyball used to prevent the opponent from a successful attack hit.
A block technique is used to deflect the ball coming from an attacker.
➢ Footwork or Court Drills
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected to:
1. Develop agility and quickness in different footwork drills.
2. Perform the different court drills.
3. Execute footwork drills.
VOLLEYBALL FOOTWORK DRILLS
Volleyball is a dynamic game that requires high levels of agility and speed. A
volleyball player must be able to start moving quickly in any direction on the court anytime.
That means that an athlete’s leg muscles must be well prepared to react to the opponent’s
actions and the ball. On the other hand, a volleyball player has to jump during a match
multiple times.
Obviously, the game of volleyball requires a lot of movement. That means that the
better footwork is – the faster an athlete is. That’s why it’s so important for an athlete to
focus on improving his/her footwork. In other words, volleyball footwork drills need to be
a part of a player’s training program.
Volleyball drills are widely-used to improve overall performance aspects like
footwork, ball control and also timing on approach jumps and blocks. Trainers and players
need to comprehend the worth of training with objective. A goal of a drill is to fix an issue,
or develop volleyball skills for example passing or hitting.
Volleyball drills are likewise great team-building workouts. Teamwork is essential
for almost any team to achieve success, as well as it’s important to for those squad
members to understand how to work together. Communication can be extremely
important, and drills are an easy way to develop good communication among team
members.
Volleyball drills are a significant way you could improve your skills, power, as well
as coordination on the volleyball court. The proper volleyball drills may even improve the
timing and footwork. Coaches trust in volleyball drills of all types to help their squads
perform better.
If a participant knows the purpose of the drill, instead of merely under-going the
motions, they shall be a lot more interested in the training. If trainers will set objectives
and set a specific target to a drill, they will get better understanding of whenever to move
ahead or regulate the drill for a much better training effect. Drills for volleyball are very
important for growing habits. If players are continuously specializing in the way to perform
a volleyball drill correctly, they can build up their capability to focus throughout
competition.
Today, we’ll talk about the drills that volleyball players have to do to improve their
footwork.
Stair Jumping
Stair jumping is the type of drill that delivers multiple significant benefits to
volleyball players of all skill levels. It’s important to know that this drill offers a great way
of improving volleyball player’s footwork.
A volleyball player can strengthen his leg muscles significantly and learn how to
land with stability by doing stair jumps. In addition, practicing this type of drill on a regular
basis has a huge positive impact on athlete’s agility, balance and endurance. In fact, stair
jumping is the total body workout.
Procedure:
1. Start by standing in front of a set of stairs in a squat
position. Arms down at your sides. This is the starting
position.
2. Jump with two feet bringing your knees to your chest
while jumping to the stairs in front of you. Swing arms up
as you jump to give yourself momentum.
3. Try to land softly on the balls of your feet with a bend in
your knees and then immediately explode back up.
Repeat this as many times as prescribed.
Lateral Hop and Hold
Lateral Hop and Hold is the drill that provides a volleyball player with the perfect
opportunity to improve his/her ankle strength, balance, stability and, most importantly,
footwork. It all begins with preparation.
Procedure:
1. Stand on one leg with a slight bend in your knee and other
leg raised off the ground.
2. Jump laterally, landing on your opposite foot.
3. Pause, and then hop once straight up in the air before
bouncing back to the starting position. Repeat this as
many times as prescribed.
One-on-One Competitions
One – on – one competition is another drill that helps volleyball players improves
their footwork. This drill has to be practiced by two volleyball players. The 1st player goes
to one side of the court and the 2nd player goes to another side of the court. Keep in mind
that that 1 – on – 1 as well as 2 – on – 2 competitions help volleyball players develop their
defense and offense skills.
Procedure:
1. The 1st player serves the ball to the opposite side of the
court. After a serve the ball can be landed anywhere on
the opposite side of the court. The job of the 2nd player is
to get to the ball quickly and try to return it back to the 1st
player.
2. Repeat until the set is complete
Icky Shuffle ACL Load Drill
You need to prepare a ladder before to start doing this type of footwork drill. During
this drill an athlete has to put an emphasis on ACL stabilization. It also requires a lot of
footwork as well as balance work during this drill. You need to do 2 sets of this drill.
Procedure:
1. Begin standing at the end of the ladder and to the side of the first
square.
2. Facing forward step laterally into the first square of the ladder with
each foot.
3. Immediately step out with just the outside foot.
4. Place the foot still in the square into the next square of the ladder
followed by the outside foot.
5. Immediately step out to the other side with just the outside foot.
6. Continue this pattern moving as quickly as possible while
maintaining good body control.
7. Jog back to line.
8. Halfway through time allocated repeat this drill leading with the
opposite leg.
Passing Star Drill
Actually, this volleyball drill is usually done by passers. The reality
is doing the drill also allows volleyball players to improve their passing
skills. A lot of volleyball players also choose to do passing star drill to
improve their footwork.
Star drill is a group drill in which all the team members participate.
The six players stand in their respective positions on the court. Get into
the stand at ease position. Bend your knees and hip forward and stretch
your hands in an underarm passing posture. The entire team should
move in all possible directions within a star shape according to the coach
instructions.
You can vary the pace from slow to high-speed and back to slow movement. Your
back should be bent forward at an angle of 45-degrees to the vertical line passing through
your hip. Always keep your head raised up. Your body language should be as if you are
expecting a ball within the next few seconds.

Right Brain Karaoke
You can also add this footwork drill to your volleyball training
program. This volleyball drill requires a ladder. During the drill you
need to cross a ladder in a particular way. Only one leg goes in a
ladder and then both legs go out a ladder.
Procedure:
Let’s assume that you start the drill with left leg.
1. Left leg (goes in a ladder)
2. Then you do right leg, left leg (go out a ladder).
Let’s assume that you start the drill with right leg.
1. right left (goes in a ladder)
2. Then you do left leg, right leg (go out a ladder).
Running Jump Rope
As you probably know, this type of drill is particularly popular among boxers. However,
running jump rope exercises can be also used in many other sports. Volleyball players can
also benefit from performing this drill.
It’s worth noting that this type of drill is all about improving athlete’s footwork. The drill
provides volleyball players with many other important benefits. The drill is also recommended
to athletes who would like to build their endurance. Running jump rope also helps athletes
increase the endurance of their legs and feet dramatically. As a result, volleyball players will
be able to perform much better on the court and achieve better results during long games.
This drill needs to be done in a traditional way. All that
you need to do is to jump with a jump rope. Plus, you need to
alternate left and right feet when jumping. It also makes sense
for a volleyball player to diversify the running jump rope drill. For
example, you can jump and land on the right foot twice first and
then you can jump and land on the left foot twice.
Procedure:
1. Hold the rope while keeping your hands at hip level
2. Rotate your wrists to swing the rope and jump
3. Jump with both feet at the same time, one foot at a time,
alternating between feet, etc.
4. Repeat until the set is complete
Wall Jumps
Wall jumping is the drill that provides volleyball players with many great benefits. One
of the most important benefits of wall jumps is that they allow
athletes to improve their footwork. On the other hand, doing this
drill regularly helps a volleyball player increase his/her vertical
jump. Doing the drill is also particularly important for blockers who
constantly need to jump high to resist the opponent’s attacks during
the game.
A coach has to mark a line for a volleyball player on the wall
using chalk. Then, he/she has to jump high and try to reach the
line. Initially, a coach marks a line that a volleyball player is likely
to reach easily. Then, a coach has to make a task more
complicated by marking the line higher on the wall. A volleyball
player has to run towards the wall and then jump as high as possible. Obviously, an athlete
has to do his/her best to reach the line on the wall. The task of a volleyball player is to touch
the wall with their hands.
CONDITIONING AND WARM-UP DRILLS IN A COURT
Stations
Procedure:
1. Split your team into four groups (1, 2, 3 & 4). NOTE: You can add a fifth group in the
center of the court if you have more players.
2. At each station, the players will perform a different task.
• For example, at station #1 they will do jump rope, at station #2 they will do
crunches (sit ups), at station #3 they will do tuck jumps and at station #4 they
will do wall sits.
• You can make these stations anything you want (sit-ups, line jumps, blocking
jumps, push-ups, mountain climbers, etc.)
3. On the signal of the coach, players do the activity designated for their station.
• Time the stations (30-45 seconds), when time is up the players jog a lap around
the volleyball court until they reach the next station (1 goes to 2, 2 goes to 3 and
so on)
Work the Court
Modify this as needed, according to your players’ abilities. The objective is to move
around the entire court (quickly) and to incorporate some volleyball skills and some
conditioning elements.
Procedure:
1. Players start in right back (X’s), they sprint to 10-foot line (#1)
2. Do an approach (#2), while at the net they do a blocking jump (#3) then transition to
10-ft. line in middle front and do an approach (#4) and another blocking jump (#5),
transition to 10-ft. line in right front and do a 3rd approach (#6) and blocking jump (#7),
3. Then duck under the net and slide across the court facing the net (#8)
4. Turn and do three sprawls or rolls back to left back corner (#9); and
5. Then sprint along end line (#10) to right back
Run and Play the Ball
Procedure:
1. Players need to get a partner and a ball and line up on the volleyball end line (one side
of the net only). One of the partners will be the “control player” (C) and the other will
be the “active player” (X).
2. X begins at the end line and runs (or sprints, depending on how difficult you want this
to be) under the net to the opposite end line and then returns to a point approximately
10 feet from the starting end line (shown by the dotted line)
3. Player C (standing a few feet behind the end line) then tosses a ball to X who passes
it back to C and then runs again to the end line and back for another pass.
4. X should get a total of 5 tosses in a row from C; and
5. Then players switch roles.
6. Repeat this again using overhand passes.
Note: For more experienced players, you can even have them do it a 3rd time with the control
player hitting/tipping a ball at X so that she has to dig it back
