1. Three reasons why the author’s grandmother was disturbed when m started going to the
city school. – The portrait of a Lady.

The author's grandmother was disturbed when he started going to the city school because:
(i) She could not help him with his lessons in English, science. ... (ii) No teaching of God
and scriptures in the author's English medium school. (iii) She was unhappy with the idea
of music lessons being given at school
2. What has the camera captured? – A Photograph.
The camera has captured a happy moment from the childhood days of the poet's mother.
The photograph was taken when the poet's mother (at the age of twelve or so) went to a
beach holiday with two of her cousins, Betty and Dolly.
3. Describe the mental condition of the voyages on 4th and 5th January. (We are not afraid
to die, if we can all be together).
On January 4 and 5, the voyagers felt relieved as after the continuous pumping for 36 hours
the water had nearly been drained out. They had their first meal in almost two days.
However, their respite was short-lived. They faced dangerous situation on January 5 as the
sea got worse during the night.
4. What lessons do we learn from such hazardous experiences when we are face to face
with death? - (We are not afraid to die, if we can all be together).
The most important lesson that we learn from such hazardous experiences, when we are
face-to-face with death, is not to lose hope under any circumstances. At times, life presents
very dire situations but if one is optimistic about finding a solution and overcomes the
odds, one will always be successful.
5. Why has King Tut’s body has been subjected to repeated scrutiny. - Discovering Tut.
King tuts body has been subjected to repeated scrutiny because he was the last heir of a
powerful family that ruled over Egypt for centuries and was just a teenager when he died.
He was laid to rest with large quantity of gold.
6. Did the boys return the horse because they were conscience-stricken or because they
were afraid? – The summer of the beautiful white horse
In The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse, the boys Aram and Mourad returned the horse
to its owner because they were conscience-stricken. The boys were guilt-stricken after
meeting John Byro, the farmer who didn't suspect them of stealing the horse. The boys felt
bad for what they did and decided to return the horse to the farmer's vineyard

7. What was the reaction of Mrs. Dorling when the narrator said she is the daughter of
Mrs. S? - The Address.
Upon hearing that she is Mrs. S's daughter, Mrs. Dorling gave an odd reaction. She pressed
her hand on the door to prevent it from opening further. She couldn't recognize the
storyteller and stared at her without saying anything.
8. What is the condition of the Laburnum top?

The top of the Laburnum tree is still and silent. It was a motionless afternoon of autumn
September light. The poet wants to portray the symbiotic relationship between the Laburnum
tree and The Goldfinch. During the days of early autumn, the leaves of the tree have turned
yellow and the seeds have fallen on the ground.

9. Which season is suggested by the month of September? – The Labernum Top.


In The Laburnum Top poem summary, the poet says that he saw a Laburnum tree in the
daytime of September. The tree looks lifeless and motionless. The treetop was silent and still.
It was the autumn season and all the seeds of the tree had fallen.
10. There are two voices in the poem. Who do they belong to? - The Voice of the rain.
The two voices in the poem are the voice of the poet and the voice of the rain. The lines
that indicate the voice of the poet and the rain are, “And who art thou? Said I to the soft-
falling shower,” and the lines that indicate the voice of the rain are, “I am the Poem of
Earth, said the voice of the rain”.

1. Why did the narrator of the story want to forget the address? – The Address.
The narrator of The Address wanted to forget the address for a number of reasons, including:
• Belongings were arranged in a strange way

The narrator was unhappy with how her mother's belongings were arranged and
displayed.
• Belongings had lost emotional value
The narrator no longer felt an emotional connection to the items.
• She had no place to keep the belongings
The narrator lived in a small rented room and didn't have space for the items.
• The lady treated her insolently
The lady who was keeping her mother's belongings treated the narrator badly, refused to
recognize her, and wouldn't let her into the house.
2. There is a parallel drawn between rain and music. Which words indicate this? Explain
the similarity between the two. – The voice of the rain.

The similarities between rain and music include:


• Origin: Both originate from a source

• Rise: Both rise up


• Fulfilment: Both reach fulfilment
• Wander: Both wander about whether cared about or not
• Return: Both finally return to the source of origin with love
• Perpetuity: Both are perpetual in nature
