PSY 205 – Theories of Personality

Theories of Personality (Personality Psychology) is a course in psychology that focuses on

studying what makes a person unique. It includes evaluating consistent internal factors such as
traits, characteristics, attitudes, lifestyles, and other constructs that may give an individual a
distinct identity. Personality can be explained from different perspectives (theories), which also
demonstrates the complexity of human behavior.

Theories of Personality (TOP) is considered a foundational course in the field of psychology.

The theories and their tenets form the basis for advanced psychology courses such as abnormal
psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, psychological assessment, and counseling and
psychotherapy. These courses won’t be easily grasped if theories of personality are not well
recognized, hence supporting its position as a foundational course.

As one of the goals of psychology is to understand human behavior, the TOP course allows students
to assess their own behavior as well as that of the people around them. Personality theories will
serve as a key to answering the questions that we always ponder about being human. In connection
with meeting that certain goal in psychology, this course includes activities and homework that
may trigger unpleasant emotions, such as Self-Analysis Journaling and Getting to Know Yourself
Activities. The uncomfortable feelings brought on by these activities are crucial as they help you
connect with yourself on a deeper level.

As the TOP course starts, you are encouraged to welcome all the emotions that will arise and to be
vulnerable at the same time. Treat this course as your safe place as you slowly learn to value
yourself. Remember, all your outputs will be kept confidential, and you will receive no judgments.
There are no right or wrong answers, as your experiences and emotions are all valid. May you
grow and learn something until the course ends.

GETTING TO KNOW YOURSELF – ACTIVITY NO. 1

Instruction: Getting to Know Yourself is a set of activities in the TOP course that allows students
to freely explore themselves. It involves questions that are personal and often may evoke strong
and uncomfortable emotions. Regardless, students are still encouraged to answer the questions
truthfully and comprehensively.

(Note: Whenever you feel something off in the middle of answering, just continue writing. Once
you are done, do not re-read your answers. Journaling is therapeutic; you may express everything
you want in journaling.)

1. Who is [insert name]?

2. What are your memorable childhood experiences?
3. How would you describe your family relationships?
4. How do you connect/socialize with other people?
5. What are your goals and aspirations in life?
6. How would you describe a meaningful life?
7. If there is one thing you would like to change about yourself, what is it and why?
8. If you were to choose a fictional character you can relate to, who would it be and why?
