The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 61: A Love-struck Man
After speaking, seeing Jiang Si’s shocked expression, Xie
Qing’ao’s face immediately turned red.

Oh no, in a moment of excitement, she had inadvertently

exposed her father.

Although her mother hadn’t said anything, these days she

always seemed worried. Qing’ao wasn’t a thoughtless
young girl anymore; she had long pondered the reasons
behind this.

After much consideration, the possibility of her father

keeping a mistress outside seemed high.

No, her father must have a mistress outside!

Xie Qing’ao stood up, “A-Si since you’ve come to the
same conclusion as me, I’ll go back right now to remind
my mother—”

“Wait, when did I come to the same conclusion as you?”

Jiang Si was a bit confused.

“Didn’t you just say that this matter was most likely related
to my father?”

Jiang Si didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She quickly

pulled Xie Qing’ao to sit down, “How did you jump to that
conclusion? I meant that perhaps your father is unwell,
and your mother is worried about his health.”

The incident of Marquis Yongchang sleeping with pigs had

been a joke in the capital for a long time, and people
would still mention it years later, but the truth was simple.

After inviting a famous doctor, the Marquis Yongchang’s

family discovered the reason for the Marquis’s bizarre
behavior: he suffered from somnambulism, also known as
sleepwalking.

Unfortunately, by then, the joke had already spread.

Now, Jiang Si was in a dilemma about how to remind her
friend.

“Health issues?” Xie Qing’ao shook her head without

thinking, “It can’t be that. If my father was unwell, my
mother would have called for a doctor long ago. Why
would she invite Immortal Sister Liu?”

“If your father had a mistress, what use would it be for

your mother to invite Immortal Sister Liu?” Jiang Si asked
in return.

Xie Qing’ao lowered her voice, “I once read some

miscellaneous records about Nanlan. Some women use
secret techniques to make unfaithful men return to them.”

Jiang Si: “…”

Xie Qing’ao held her head in frustration.

She had unintentionally exposed her mother again.

“Qing’ao, I think you’re overthinking this. Given your

mother’s status, even if your father had a mistress or even
a child outside, would your mother resort to such
methods?”
“Then what’s going on? Sigh, why did Immortal Sister Liu
have to die at this particular time?” Xie Qing’ao sighed in
frustration.

“Don’t look so gloomy. Since your mother won’t say

anything, don’t ask her directly. Try to gather information
indirectly or ask the maids close to your mother. Pay more
attention to your father’s behavior, and you might uncover
the truth.”

Marquis Yongchang’s sleepwalking had progressed to the

point of sleeping with pigs. It must have happened more
than once or twice. Lady Yongchang must have noticed
the Marquis’s unusual behavior and thought of
supernatural causes, hence the idea of inviting Immortal
Sister Liu to exorcise evil spirits.

Immortal Sister Liu’s sudden death had left Lady

Yongchang in a state of confusion. If Xie Qing’ao was
observant, it wouldn’t be difficult to find the source of her
mother’s worries.

“Mm, I’ll investigate when I get back. By the way, A-Si,

have you ever spoken with Immortal Sister Liu?” Young
girls of Xie Qing’ao’s age were always curious about
Immortal Sister Liu, who had been rumored to have
mystical powers and then met a violent end at the height
of her fame.

Jiang Si’s eyes curved in a slight smile, “I’ve greeted her,

of course. After all, she stayed at our house for two days.”

“I heard that Immortal Sister Liu’s murder case has

alarmed all three judicial offices, and even the constables
of the Shuntian Prefecture are busy. A-Si, do you think
they’ll catch the killer who harmed Immortal Sister Liu?”

“I think it’s unlikely.”

“Why?”

Jiang Si took a small sip of her clear tea, thinking to

herself: Because good deeds are rewarded.

“You’re being mysterious again.”

Jiang Si smiled gently, “I’m not being mysterious.

Someone like Immortal Sister Liu dealt with all sorts of
people from various walks of life. Her relationships were
complex and chaotic. Trying to find the killer would be like
looking for a needle in a haystack.”
At this moment, Jiang Si and her close friend weren’t the
only ones discussing the true killer of Immortal Sister Liu;
it was a hot topic throughout the entire city.

However, that killer had already left the capital and

returned to a small town hundreds of miles away.

The man with a calm expression walked leisurely towards

his home.

“General Qin, haven’t seen you at the tavern for a while,” a

passerby greeted the man.

“I’ll be there soon,” the man smiled. Compared to his

previous gloomy and depressed demeanor, he seemed
more relaxed, as if reinvigorated with a new spirit.

But if one looked closely, this feeling was also unsettling.

The man before them was like a flame, bright but capable
of burning himself to ashes.

As the low, simple house came into view, the man pushed
open the door and looked around, not seeing any sign of
the young man.
The man walked back to the courtyard, lifted the lid of the
water vat by the door, scooped up some water to drink,
and then jumped in to take a refreshing bath. Afterward,
he changed into new clothes.

These clothes were made for him by his fiancée over ten
years ago. The fabric was of high quality, and even now,
the colors remain vibrant.

However, after so many years, the once-spirited young

military officer had become a down-and-out drunkard. The
fine clothes looked out of place on him now.

Yet the man carefully smoothed out the hem and strode
out of the house.

The rural paths felt slightly damp underfoot. In the fields,

besides the lush green crops, one could occasionally see
raised mounds of earth.

Those were graves.

His fiancée now resided in such a place, having waited for

him for a long time.

In the distance, a grave mound appeared. Unlike the

others, there was a thatched hut not far from it.
The man had built it himself. Sometimes, when life felt
unbearable, he would come to stay here for a couple of
days.

This time, however, the man didn’t enter the thatched hut.
Instead, he sat down directly in front of the grave, lovingly
touching the green grass growing on the mound.

A green tomb holding fragrant bones—the mere thought

was heart-wrenching.

The man sat motionless for who knows how long until
even the birds resting on the branches grew weary and
flew away.

He lowered his head and took out a hairpin from his

bosom.

This hairpin was also old, with a sharp tip. It was a gift he
never had the chance to give her.

The man held the hairpin and placed it against his chest,
seriously contemplating.

With a bit of force, it should be quick, right?

A sudden sound made the man jump up, clutching the
golden hairpin and looking alertly in the direction of the
noise.

The young man who had brought such a dramatic change

to his life stood not far away with an odd expression, two
fish flopping happily at his feet.

“Why are you here?” the man asked, walking over with the
golden hairpin in hand.

A-Fei licked his lips, “Don’t be agitated, I was waiting for

you.”

Is gold so worthless these days that people are using

golden hairpins as weapons?

The man looked down at the lively grass carp.

A-Fei quickly raised both hands, “Please don’t be upset,

the fish are innocent!”

He had waited so long in this dilapidated hut, what was

wrong with wanting to eat some grilled fish?

“You should leave,” the man said calmly.

A-Fei bit his tongue.

He was truly frightened now. This man had just been

about to take his own life. When someone no longer cares
about their own life, what if they decide they want a
drinking companion on their final journey?

“If you’re scared, why don’t you leave quickly?”

“The person who wrote you the letter has more to say
through me.”

“It’s not necessary anymore.” The man ignored A-Fei and

returned to the grave.

A-Fei steeled himself and called out, “She said that your
fiancée has been gone for over ten years. She’s already
reincarnated. Even if you go to find her now, you won’t be
able to.”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 62: Perversion
The man lunged forward and grabbed Afei’s collar,
shouting hoarsely, “He’s talking nonsense! He’s talking
nonsense!”

Afei shook like a noodle, nearly vomiting up the meal he

had eaten earlier.

The man gradually stopped, crouched down holding his

head, and pulled at his hair, looking extremely distressed.

Afei glanced at the man and surprisingly turned to leave.

As Afei reached the edge of the field, the man suddenly

jumped up, chased after him, and blocked his path.

Afei’s heart immediately leaped into his throat.

“What else did he say?” the man demanded.

“Nothing else,” Afei replied.

“Nothing else?” The man clearly couldn’t accept this

answer.

“Nothing else. She instructed me to wait here, and after

saying that one sentence to you, I could leave,” Afei said
honestly.
He was very curious about how Miss Jiang knew this idler
from a small town hundreds of li away, and why she had
told him to wait at this grave if the man left after receiving
the message.

Afei wasn’t stupid. Growing up on the streets had made

him quite shrewd. The more he pondered this situation,
the more alarmed he became.

Had Miss Jiang asked him to wait here because she

anticipated that this man would come to commit suicide?

Afei felt a chill run down his spine.

How did Miss Jiang know? Could she foresee the future?

Thinking about the unbearable pain he had experienced at

midnight some days ago, and the series of events that had
unfolded since then, Afei suddenly felt a deep fear.

This fear wasn’t just because of the emotionally unstable

man in front of him who might go crazy and kill someone
at any moment, but also because of the beautiful young
lady with a radiant smile far away in the capital.
However, besides fear, Afei inexplicably felt a sense of
excitement.

After all, he was a man. Even though he was of low birth

and had never been educated, what man is truly content
with a mediocre life?

To those noble people, someone like him was just a

commoner, a dime a dozen. Hoping for a powerful official
to favor him was nothing but a fool’s dream.

Miss Jiang was so extraordinary, and he had inadvertently

become involved with this mysterious young lady. Perhaps
this was the opportunity of a lifetime for him, Afei?

Seize this chance!

This voice suddenly appeared in Afei’s heart.

Since Miss Jiang had casually given him an extra hundred

taels on top of the agreed hundred, it was enough to show
that as long as he served Miss Jiang well, there would be
no shortage of benefits in the future.

Far away in the capital, Jiang Si didn’t know that

witnessing her “prophetic abilities” firsthand had ignited
the ambition that most men would have in Afei and that
the extra hundred taels she had given had become the
foundation supporting Afei’s ambition.

No one wants to work for a ruthless master who is also

tight-fisted.

“Brother, I’m leaving now,” Afei said with a forced laugh,

carefully sidling to the side, preparing to go around the
man blocking his way.

He was destined for greater things in the future; he

couldn’t die here.

Seeing no reaction from the man, Afei secretly breathed a

sigh of relief and quickly walked forward.

Footsteps sounded behind him, and Afei paused, turning

his head to look.

The man, expressionless, was following closely behind.

“Brother, why are you following me?” Afei nearly cried.

“I want to see her,” the man said, tucking the golden

hairpin into his clothes, no longer intending to die.
If he couldn’t be with his fiancée even in the afterlife, then
death held no attraction for him anymore.

Afei’s expression became conflicted.

“I can’t see her?” the man asked.

“She didn’t say…” Afei actually couldn’t understand Jiang

Si’s arrangements either.

If Miss Jiang didn’t care about this man’s life or death, why
had she asked him to guard the grave for so many days?

But if she cared about this man’s life, why would she only
leave one sentence and be done with it? Shouldn’t she at
least have instructed him to be prepared to persuade the
man not to die?

Afei was overthinking it.

For Jiang Si, knowing about the man’s intention to die for
love, she was moved by his devotion and, as an onlooker,
was willing to lend a helping hand. But if a person was
determined to die, she couldn’t expect Afei’s small frame
to forcibly stop him, could she?
In such matters, one can only do their best and leave the
rest to fate.

The life was the man’s own, and in the end, only he could
decide.

Seeing the man following him step by step, Afei sighed,

“Fine, follow if you want. But let me tell you, she’s in the
capital—”

The man’s eyes narrowed, interrupting Afei, “The capital?”

“Yes, it’s far away. Are you going to follow me there?”

The man’s expression became even more determined,

“Yes.”

He had just killed someone in the capital, but now he felt

no fear about returning.

Although he had given up the idea of seeking death, he

didn’t care much about his life anymore. He just wanted to
see the person who had cleared the fog for him.

As for what he would do after seeing that person, the man

hadn’t thought about it.
“Even if you reach the capital, she might not see you,” Afei
reminded him again.

She was a noble lady, and even being able to interact with
him was an accident. Whether she would be willing to see
this man was hard to say.

The man said no more and stood beside Afei.

“Alright, I’ve said what I needed to say. It’s up to you,” Afei

conceded.

And so, a somewhat frivolous young man and a taciturn,

cold man set off together on their journey.

The capital had entered May, and the weather was

starting to heat up, though not as hot as it would be in
June or July. It was the perfect time for various banquets
to be held frequently.

However, the noble ladies in this circle gradually noticed

that the wife of the Marquis Changxing’s heir had been
absent from many banquets.

This wasn’t surprising. Being possessed by evil spirits and

even harming her grandmother at her maiden home,
anyone who encountered such a situation would need
some time before they could face people again.

But Jiang Qian’s days were even more difficult than

people imagined.

In the bedchamber of the Marquis Changxing’s heir, a

scandalous atmosphere lingered.

Cao Xingyu, the heir of Marquis Changxing, dressed and

tied his belt, then placed a foot on Jiang Qian’s chest,
asking expressionlessly, “When will you finally complete
the task I gave you?”

Jiang Qian, without a shred of cloth covering her body, her

eyelashes trembling, bit her lip and said, “I… I can’t go
back to the Earl’s mansion recently…”

She knew her grandmother better than anyone. Right now,

the entire household was merely observing her loss of
face at her maiden home. If she went back and was driven
out, she would truly have nothing left to hide her shame.

At that point, as a woman who had lost her maiden

family’s support and had not yet borne a child, who in her
husband’s family would still value her?
“Who asked you to go back? Invite her here!” Cao Xingyu
withdrew his foot and pinched Jiang Qian’s chin.

“She…” Jiang Qian hesitated, thinking of Jiang Si’s cold

and clear gaze.

“What, can’t invite her?” Cao Xingyu pressed.

Jiang Qian’s heart trembled, and she gritted her teeth, “I’ll
go invite her, just wait a little longer…”

“Alright, don’t look like you’re about to die. I just want to

see her up close more often. I’m not planning to do
anything to your sister.” Satisfied with the promise, Cao
Xingyu nodded, straightened his clothes, and walked out.

Jiang Qian stared at Cao Xingyu’s retreating, her

expression very complex.

This man was a pervert, and she had become the wife of a
pervert. It seemed she had no other path to walk.

Invitation
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 63: An Invitation
Before the maids could enter to attend to her, Jiang Qian
forced herself to dress despite her body’s soreness and
walked to the window, pushing it open.

The wind blew in, carrying a warm, heady scent that mixed
with the languid atmosphere inside the room, creating a
sickeningly sweet and nauseating feeling. Jiang Qian,
however, had long grown accustomed to this. She stood
by the window, lost in thought, gazing at a cluster of lush
green banana leaves outside.

Having lost so much face at the Earl’s mansion, she had

seen no shortage of mockery in the eyes of those in the
Marquis’s household these past days. She had originally
planned to wait a while before bringing up the matter of
inviting Jiang Si over, but Cao Xingyu couldn’t wait.

She dared not delay any longer, for she knew better than
anyone what kind of person Cao Xingyu was. Once he
became unhinged, there was no reason with him. It was
better to let things flow than to obstruct them. Rather than
letting him create a huge mess that would drag her down
with him, it was preferable to indulge his wishes and invite
Jiang Si over for him to look his fill.

Jiang Si was her cousin, a proper young lady from the

Earl’s household. Cao Xingyu wouldn’t dare to act rashly
for now; at most, he would feast his eyes.

A maid’s request for entry came from outside. Jiang Qian

responded, ignoring the maids who filed in as she made
her way to the study.
Given her current situation, inviting Jiang Si over wouldn’t
be easy. In her grandmother’s eyes, she was someone
who brought bad luck. Even if Jiang Si were willing to
come, it was highly unlikely that her grandmother would
agree.

Jiang Qian carefully composed two letters and ordered

them to be delivered to the East Peace Earl’s mansion.

When Second Madam Xiao received Jiang Qian’s letter,

tears immediately fell from her eyes. With slightly
reddened eyes, she made her way to the Hall of
Compassion.

The sound of operatic singing drifted from the Hall of

Compassion.

Since Old Madam Feng’s eyesight had improved, she had

developed a fondness for watching opera. While
maintaining a full-time opera troupe in the household was
somewhat impractical given the Earl’s finances, Second
Master Jiang was a filial son. He had purchased two girls,
just over ten years old, from an opera troupe, specifically
to entertain the old lady.

“Old Madam, Second Madam has arrived,” announced a

servant.
As it wasn’t the usual time for paying respects, Old
Madam Feng didn’t even raise an eyebrow upon hearing
this. She continued to keep her eyes closed, tapping out
the rhythm as she listened to the two young girls in opera
costumes singing.

Old Madam Feng’s coldness towards Madam Xiao was

unmistakably clear.

Everyone in the Hall of Compassion understood that this

was because the old lady was still angry about the incident
involving the Second Young Madam.

It was no wonder Old Madam Feng was furious. The

Taoist Nun Liu’s ritual had inexplicably become the talk of
the capital, which was bad enough, but then Taoist Nun
Liu was murdered. The officials from the Shuntian
Prefecture had been in an uproar for days, unable to catch
even a shadow of the culprit.

What do people love to gossip about most in this world?

Not events that have passed, but unresolved matters.

As long as the murderer of Taoist Nun Liu remained at

large, the citizens of the capital would not lose interest in
the case anytime soon. Consequently, Taoist Nun Liu’s
connection to the East Peace Earl’s mansion would
continue to be chewed over in conversations.

Now, a rumor had even started circulating that Taoist Nun

Liu had met her demise because she had pointed out that
the Marquis of Changxing’s daughter-in-law was
possessed by an evil spirit, which had caused the
Marquis’s household to lose face.

Of course, this rumor was baseless. The nobility would

laugh it off, but the common folk who believed every
whisper they heard took great pleasure in spreading such
gossip, embellishing it with increasingly vivid details.

Old Madam Feng’s chest ached with anger just thinking

about all this, so it was no wonder her attitude towards
Madam Xiao was less than cordial.

Madam Xiao stood outside for a full half hour before being
invited in.

“Do you have business?” Old Madam Feng asked curtly.

Madam Xiao, holding a small box, smiled and said,

“Young Master Cang happened to acquire a string of
agarwood prayer beads. Knowing you like them, he
immediately had them sent back.”
Hearing Madam Xiao mention her eldest grandson, Old
Madam Feng’s expression softened slightly. She gestured
for A-Fu to take the box, and said coolly, “He should focus
on his studies instead of wasting effort on such things.”

Madam Xiao immediately replied, “Showing filial piety to

you, Old Madam, is only natural. How could it be
considered a waste of effort?”

Old Madam Feng’s eyes were half-closed as she caressed

the palm-sized redwood box.

Her displeasure was genuine, but no matter how much

she disliked her second daughter-in-law, she couldn’t
possibly entrust the household to her third daughter-in-
law.

She still had to maintain some face for her second

daughter-in-law.

Old Madam Feng opened her eyes and said flatly, “I know
you all have filial hearts.”

Madam Xiao secretly breathed a sigh of relief, her smile

growing even warmer as she carefully broached the
subject, “Today, Qian’er sent a letter to you, Old
Madam…”

As she spoke, she took out the letter.

Old Madam Feng’s face immediately darkened. “If she’s

not running home every other day, she’s sending letters
home. Is she unable to live in the Marquis’s household?”

Hearing this, Madam Xiao dabbed at the corner of her eye

and said, “Old Madam, Qian’er truly cannot live
comfortably in the Marquis’s household anymore. She
married above her station, to begin with, and after two
years of marriage, there’s still no sign of a child. Her ability
to stand firm in the Marquis’s household relied on your
love for her, but now—”

Old Madam Feng remained unmoved.

Madam Xiao secretly gritted her teeth and, throwing away

her pride, pleaded, “Old Madam, you know that Qian’er
has always been sensible. She would never dare to
disturb your peace. She just wants to invite her sisters to
stay at the Marquis’s mansion for a couple of days. It
would also prevent those in the Marquis’s household from
looking down on her and our Earl’s mansion…”
Madam Xiao’s meaning was clear. Because of the incident
with Taoist Nun Liu, the Marquis’s household thought that
the Earl’s mansion no longer cared about their married-out
daughter. If the young ladies from the Earl’s mansion were
willing to visit the Marquis’s household for a couple of days
at this time, such speculation would naturally be
disproved, thus resolving Jiang Qian’s predicament.

Old Madam Feng listened to Madam Xiao’s words with an

expressionless face, her gaze falling on the letter.

The letter was written in a graceful hand: “Granddaughter

Qian humbly requests Grandmother’s attention.”

Looking at the familiar handwriting, Old Madam Feng’s

heart softened a bit.

From the beginning, she had never liked her eldest

daughter-in-law, and the eldest granddaughter born to her
was dull and foolish, so naturally, she couldn’t bring
herself to like her either. However, her second
granddaughter, who was of similar age to the eldest, had
been clever and endearing from a young age, earning
much of her affection. The second granddaughter had
even begun her literacy lessons in the gauze-curtained
study of the Hall of Compassion.
Old Madam Feng thought for a moment, then opened the
letter and began to read.

Jiang Qian’s eloquence was fully displayed in the letter. By

the time Old Madam Feng finished reading, her
expression had softened further.

Madam Xiao seized the opportunity to plead, “Old Madam,

please take pity on Qian’er. I heard from the servant who
delivered the letter that Qian’er has become as thin as a
rail…”

“Very well, it’s a good season now. Let those girls go out
for some fresh air,” Old Madam Feng finally relented.

Madam Xiao’s face lit up with joy.

Old Madam Feng’s tone changed, “However, let me make

this clear: if they cause any trouble and make the
Marquis’s household laugh at us, Qian’er, as their elder
sister, cannot escape responsibility!”

“Rest assured, Old Madam. Qian’er is most loving towards

her sisters and will surely take good care of them.”

In the Begonia Residence, Jiang Si took Jiang Qian’s

invitation, glanced at it, and casually tossed it onto her
desk. She instructed A-Qiao, “Go and find out if the other
young ladies received invitations.”

Before long, A-Qiao returned with her report: “Third Miss,

Fifth Miss, and Sixth Miss all received invitations.”

This result was not unexpected to Jiang Si, but it still made
her sigh.

Two days later, four young ladies from the Earl’s mansion
set out in the same carriage, heading towards the Marquis
of Changxing’s residence.

Wager in the Carriage
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 64: A Wager in the Carriage
In recent days, many events have transpired at Earl
Dongping’s manor. Additionally, Jiang Si had claimed to
be ill for a while, so it was rare for the four sisters to have
such an opportunity to gather together.

However, the atmosphere in the small carriage

compartment was far from pleasant.

“Some people are just thick-skinned. They argue with their

elders one moment and go out to play the next,” Sixth
Miss Jiang Pei sat by the carriage door, examining herself
in a palm-sized mirror.

Her words were undoubtedly directed at Jiang Si.

In the young girl’s mind, Jiang Si had just been at odds
with Second Madam Xiao, yet now she was off to play at
Marquis Changxing’s manor. Her face must be as thick as
the city walls.

Jiang Si gave Jiang Pei an ambiguous smile.

Feeling uncomfortable under Jiang Si’s gaze, Jiang Pei

tugged at Fifth Miss Jiang Li’s sleeve. “Fifth Sister, don’t
you agree?”

In her view, as girls from the second branch of the family,

they should present a united front to others, even if they
don’t get along privately.

Fifth Miss Jiang Li didn’t want to offend anyone and just

smiled without saying a word.

Jiang Pei scoffed disdainfully and smiled at Third Miss

Jiang Qiao. “Third Sister, do you remember when we
visited the Marquis’s manor that year? It was even earlier
in the season than now, and the peonies in the garden
were blooming in vast, beautiful patches.”

“I didn’t notice,” Jiang Qiao replied listlessly, fiddling with a

string of jade beads.
She had no interest in appreciating flowers or scenery.
She was only on this trip to avoid troubling her mother,
merely going through the motions.

Regarding sisterly relationships, if her attitude towards

Jiang Si stemmed from a lifelong rivalry that made her
view the other unfavorably, her feelings towards Jiang Pei
were of complete disdain.

She had never seen anyone so loose-tongued.

Thinking this, Jiang Qiao glanced at the calm-faced Jiang

Si, musing: She’s just a paper tiger. If it were me, I would
have beaten Jiang Pei several times by now.

Perhaps because the carriage was too cramped with four

people, or because the creaking of the wheels was too
monotonous, Jiang Pei couldn’t stay quiet for long and
soon aimed her barbs at Jiang Si again. “Fourth Sister,
aren’t you worried about losing face when we arrive at the
Marquis’s manor?”

Jiang Si leaned against the carriage wall with her eyes

closed, seemingly oblivious to the comment.

Jiang Si’s disregard only made Jiang Pei more brazen.

She put away her small mirror and said with a grin, “I
suppose you’re right. If you were afraid of losing face, you
wouldn’t go at all. They say thick skin is hereditary—”

Jiang Si opened her eyes and gave Jiang Pei a cold look.

Jiang Pei’s jab about “heredity” was not without reason.

Jiang Si’s mother, Madam Su, came from the Yining

Marquis family and was a renowned beauty in the capital.
However, such a beauty had been betrothed since
childhood.

Madam Su and her fiancé were childhood sweethearts

with deep affection for each other. Originally, there was no
possibility of Madam Su marrying Jiang Ancheng.
However, when it was almost time for their wedding, Su’s
fiancé caught the eye of Princess Rongyang.

After a series of twists and turns, Su’s fiancé, Cui Xu,

became Princess Rongyang’s consort.

The cancellation of the engagement between the Cui and

Su families shouldn’t have greatly affected Madam Su.

The Cui family was a leading military family at the time,

and everyone knew that Cui Xu ultimately became a
consort due to the machinations of those above. Madam
Su was purely unlucky.

The Yining Marquis’s family thought the same and

planned to wait a year or so before arranging another
marriage for Madam Su. However, not long after, rumors
suddenly spread that Su and Cui Xu had been intimate
since childhood and that she was no longer pure.

These rumors completely ruined Madam Su’s reputation.

No matter how much Madam Su’s parents loved their

daughter, no family of equal standing to the Changxing
Marquis’s household was willing to take Madam Su as a
wife.

Madam Su remained unmarried for two more years until

she accidentally encountered Jiang Ancheng while out
offering incense. Jiang Ancheng was captivated by her
beauty and insisted on proposing to the Changxing
Marquis’s family, despite Old Madam Feng’s fury.

At that time, the Yining Marquis and his wife were already
at their wits’ end about Madam Su’s marriage. When the
Dongping Earl’s family sent a matchmaker, they
immediately made discreet inquiries about the groom. The
results showed that Jiang Ancheng was more than
suitable in character and appearance to be a son-in-law.
The only major drawback was that the Dongping Earl’s
title would only be inherited for three generations.
However, with their daughter’s tarnished reputation, the
Marquis’s family was in no position to be picky.

Concerned that their daughter might be mistreated, the

Yining Marquis and his wife prepared a generous dowry
for Madam Su.

This generous dowry made Old Madam Feng reluctantly

hold her tongue, but she believed that there was some
truth to the rumors and that the Yining Marquis’s family felt
guilty, hence the lavish dowry.

As such, it would have been strange if Old Madam Feng

had any goodwill towards Madam Su.

Even though Jiang Ancheng had hinted several times,

both openly and subtly, that Madam Su was a good
woman, Old Madam Feng became increasingly resentful.
She was convinced that Madam Su had bewitched her
son with her beauty, causing him to constantly defend her.

The most outstanding trees are the first to be felled by the

wind. The more radiant Madam Su had been among the
noble ladies, the more people there were who now took
pleasure in her misfortune.

Jiang Pei’s knowledge of the previous generation’s affairs

was not fabricated out of thin air.

Jiang Si had no desire to engage in a war of words with a

sharp-tongued little girl, but she could no longer tolerate
insults from her late mother.

“What’s wrong? Is someone feeling guilty?” Jiang Pei

covered her mouth and laughed.

She didn’t believe Jiang Si would dare to hit her in front of

so many people. And when it came to verbal sparring, she
considered herself unbeatable.

Thinking this, Jiang Pei twisted the jade bracelet on her

wrist.

This pair of jade bracelets was a reward from her

stepmother after hearing about her altercation with Jiang
Si, who approved of her actions.

Jiang Si’s cool gaze rested on Jiang Pei, showing no

intention of rolling up her sleeves to fight.
Some people never learn their lesson; it’s a waste of
energy to use force with such individuals.

Seeing Jiang Si remain silent, Jiang Qiao secretly rolled

her eyes.

Usually so capable against her, now playing the innocent

lamb. Come on, hit her!

Jiang Qiao wasn’t taking Jiang Si’s side; she was just fed
up with Jiang Pei’s loose tongue.

No matter how much sisters might quarrel, disrespecting

each other’s parents went too far.

This was a principle of basic decency, applicable both

within the family and outside.

Fifth Miss Jiang Li vaguely sensed the undercurrent

beneath the calm surface and quietly inched towards the
corner.

“Losing face? Feeling guilty?” Jiang Si laughed without

anger. “Does Sixth Sister know that right now, it’s Second
Sister who’s feeling guilty? If I don’t go, it’s Second Sister
who will lose face.”
“What nonsense are you talking about?”

Jiang Si reached out, her finger as white and delicate as a

spring onion, pointing at Jiang Pei’s cheek. “Do you
believe that if I were to get off this carriage now, Second
Aunt would strip that new bracelet off your wrist?”

Jiang Pei couldn’t help but flinch backward.

She wasn’t stupid; she knew this visit to the Changxing

Marquis’s manor was to support Second Sister. If Jiang Si
really made a scene and got off the carriage now, her
stepmother would surely fly her alive.

“Do you believe that when we see Second Sister, if I tell

her you’re too noisy and should go back to the Earl’s
manor, she won’t say a single word of objection?”

“I don’t believe it!” This time, Jiang Pei’s voice was full of
confidence.

How could that be possible?

Second Sister had sent invitations to all four of them. She

and Second Sister shared the same father, and she had
always obeyed Second Sister since childhood. How could
Second Sister make her leave just because of a word from
Jiang Si?

“Then let’s make a bet,” Jiang Si proposed.

“What kind of bet?”

“We’ll bet on whether Second Sister will do as I say. If

Second Sister doesn’t listen to me, you win. Otherwise,
you lose.”

“What are the stakes?”

Jiang Si smiled indifferently. “If you win, name your terms.

If you lose… it’s simple. You’ll slap yourself ten times in
front of us three and say you’ve eaten too much dung,
that’s why your mouth stinks. How about it? Do you dare
to bet?”

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 65: Entering the Marquis’s Mansion
“If I win, I can ask for anything?” Jiang Pei’s eyes lit up,
completely ignoring the consequences of losing.
Her second sister was always considerate; how could she
possibly send back a younger sister who had been
formally invited? In Jiang Pei’s mind, this was impossible,
so there was no need to worry about what would happen if
she lost.

“Anything you want,” Jiang Si confirmed.

“I want your set of red-gold ruby headdress!” Jiang Pei

exclaimed.

Jiang Si looked at Jiang Pei for a moment, then suddenly

smiled. After all, she was just a young girl, concerned only
with food, drink, and clothing, with nothing more
substantial in her mind.

“Are you unwilling? You just said I could ask for anything
—”

“Fine,” Jiang Si nodded readily.

Jiang Pei grew excited. “You can’t go back on your word

now.”

“I certainly won’t go back on my word. What about you?”

Jiang Si asked with a smile.
Whether young or old, one should be punished for
speaking recklessly. Her brother was barely seventeen,
yet her second uncle and aunt showed him no mercy.
Moreover, her second brother was innocent, while Jiang
Pei truly deserved a slap for her loose tongue.

“Of course, I won’t go back on my word either,” Jiang Pei

said without hesitation.

Why would she want to go back on her word? It was an

entire set of red-gold ruby headdresses! After years of
humbling herself before her stepmother, she wouldn’t
receive such a fine headdress even for her wedding.

The more Jiang Pei thought about it, the more excited she
became as if the red-gold ruby headdress was already in
her possession.

“Sixth Sister, perhaps we shouldn’t bet…” Jiang Li felt

uneasy and couldn’t help but advise.

“Mind your own business!” Jiang Pei glared at Jiang Li.

She looked down on this fifth sister who was older than
her yet so timid.

“Then it’s settled,” Jiang Si said.

“Hehe, Fourth Sister, just have the red-gold ruby
headdress ready. Don’t be reluctant to part with it when
the time comes,” Jiang Pei extended her hand.

Jiang Si curved her lips slightly and reached out to clap

hands with Jiang Pei.

The crisp sound of their hands meeting broke the

monotony of the carriage’s journey.

Jiang Li lifted a corner of the carriage curtain and said

softly, “We’ve arrived at the Marquis of Changxing’s
mansion.”

The carriage soon came to a stop, and the four sisters

disembarked one after another.

Jiang Qiao took the opportunity to pull Jiang Si aside and

sneered, “Do you have too many good things and
nowhere to put them?”

“No, I just think someone needs to wash their mouth out,”

Jiang Si replied.

Jiang Qiao let go, looking at Jiang Si’s delicate and calm
profile. She suddenly felt that this sister, only a few
months younger than her, was becoming increasingly
inscrutable.

“Young ladies have arrived. The Young Madam had me

waiting here since early morning,” a maid in green clothing
stood at the entrance, bowing to Jiang Si and the others
as they got off the carriage.

Jiang Pei, who had been boisterous on the carriage,

immediately composed herself, keeping her eyes lowered,
the very picture of a well-bred young lady.

The green-clad maid looked at Jiang Pei with surprise.

This young lady’s deportment was indeed proper, but she
was the youngest, so why was she walking in front?

Jiang Pei had been on edge since getting off the carriage,
afraid of making a fool of herself. Sensing the maid’s odd
look, she glanced to the side and suddenly realized her
mistake. She had been closest to the carriage door and in
her nervousness, she had forgotten her place!

Jiang Pei hesitated, her face immediately turning red.

Fifth Miss Jiang Li naturally linked arms with Jiang Pei and
said, “Afraid of keeping Second Sister waiting, Sixth Sister
is even more impatient than I am.”
With one sentence, she dispelled Jiang Pei’s
embarrassment.

Jiang Si gave Jiang Li an extra glance. Her fifth sister had

always been quiet and unassuming, timid and low-key, but
she turned out to be quite perceptive. It was a pity that in
her previous life, she had been so unremarkable that
Jiang Si couldn’t remember what had become of her later.

The layout of the Marquis of Changxing’s mansion was

similar to that of the East Peace Earl’s mansion, only more
spacious and grander. This was all quite normal, except
for the garden, which far surpassed that of the East Peace
Earl’s mansion.

In the garden of the Marquis of Changxing’s mansion

stood an artificial mountain three stories high, with a
pavilion at its peak. One could climb the steps from the
foot of the mountain to enjoy the cool breeze and
panoramic view of the garden from the pavilion at the top.

Besides this, the garden was lush with flowers and trees,
particularly a patch of peonies blooming brilliantly in the
eastern corner.
The four sisters couldn’t help but cast a few extra glances
at the peony patch.

At this time of the year, peonies were typically past their

prime, often looking somewhat lackluster elsewhere. The
fact that these flowers were blooming so vibrantly was
truly a rare and beautiful sight.

The green-clad maid was proud of the mansion’s peonies.

As she led Jiang Si and the others forward, she smiled
and said, “The young ladies have come at just the right
time. If you had come a few days later, the peonies would
have already withered.”

The maid quickly led the four to Jiang Qian’s residence.

Jiang Qian was standing at the entrance of the courtyard.

As soon as she saw Jiang Si and the others arrive, she
hurried to greet them: “My dear sisters have finally
arrived.”

Her gaze lingered on Jiang Si for a moment longer, and

she smiled with relief as if a burden had been lifted from
her shoulders.

“We’ve kept Second Sister waiting,” Jiang Pei

affectionately linked arms with Jiang Qian.
Jiang Qian frowned instinctively, but quickly relaxed and
led her sisters into the house.

Jiang Qian resided in the heir apparent’s quarters, which

was the most spacious and bright area after the Marquis
and his wife’s residence. The furnishings in the room
struck a balance between opulence and elegance, clearly
arranged with care by the lady of the house.

“My dear sisters must be tired from the journey. Have

some tea first, and please make yourselves at home here
with me, just as if you were in your own home.”

Jiang Qian’s warm welcome made Jiang Pei feel even

more at ease. Looking at Jiang Qian, her eyes reddened:
“Second Sister, you’ve lost weight.”

A flash of displeasure crossed Jiang Qian’s eyes, but she

said mildly, “I’ve been worried about Grandmother’s
health, and as the weather is getting hotter, I’ve been
eating less.”

Jiang Si shook her head inwardly. Jiang Pei was still too
young to understand that someone as proud as Jiang
Qian would never want to hear such words of sympathy
from a half-sister, no matter how difficult her
circumstances were.

Jiang Pei, having been rebuffed, fell silent awkwardly.

Among them, Jiang Pei was the most talkative, Jiang Li

was naturally quiet, and Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao were
from different branches of the family. With Jiang Pei
silenced, the atmosphere suddenly became awkward.

Jiang Qian, realizing it wasn’t the time to stand on

ceremony, was about to liven up the atmosphere when
Jiang Si calmly said, “Second Sister, could you dismiss
the maids? I have something to say.”

Jiang Qian was somewhat surprised but quickly gestured

for the maids to withdraw. She asked gently, “What does
Fourth Sister want to say?”

Jiang Si glanced at Jiang Pei and said directly, “I don’t

want to stay here with Sixth Sister during our visit to the
Marquis’s mansion. Second Sister, please send her back.”

This time, Jiang Qian’s surprise was unconcealed. She

quickly looked at Jiang Pei and asked, “Fourth Sister,
have you and Sixth Sister disagreed?”
Jiang Si was something, first inexplicably picking on her,
and now falling out with Sixth Sister. Did she intend to
offend all her sisters before she’d be satisfied?

Jiang Pei was even more shocked, her mouth agape.

She had thought Jiang Si would use some clever words to

persuade Second Sister to send her away, but it turned
out to be this blunt and forceful!

Heavens, had Jiang Si gone mad, or did she think Second

Sister had lost her mind?

Jiang Qiao secretly held her head in her hands.

She had always thought Fourth Sister was proud and

arrogant, but she never thought she was foolish.

“Fourth Sister, if there’s been any unpleasantness, you

can tell Second Sister about it. We’re all sisters from the
same household—”

Jiang Si set her teacup down on the table with a clunk and
stood up. “If Sixth Sister doesn’t leave, then I’ll leave.”

Seeing Jiang Si turn to leave without hesitation, Jiang

Qian felt a surge of panic and quickly said, “Fourth Sister,
please stay. I’ll have someone send Sixth Sister back right
away.”

Chapter 66: Flower Appreciation
Jiang Si stopped in her tracks and calmly looked at Jiang
Pei.

Jiang Pei seemed as if she had been slapped hundreds of

times in the face, completely dumbfounded.

“I was just thinking that Sixth Sister is still young and might
not be comfortable away from home…” Jiang Qian began.

“Second Sister—” Jiang Pei murmured, her mind blank.

How had she suddenly become too young and

uncomfortable? She had been here before—

“Alright, Sixth Sister, I’ll have someone escort you back

first. Second Sister will invite you to visit another time,”
Jiang Qian casually offered an excuse, not caring about
Jiang Pei’s thoughts.

One was a married legitimate daughter with the status of

the heir’s wife, while the other was a concubine-born
daughter who needed to please the main wife for any
hope of a decent marriage. Jiang Qian had never truly
cared about this half-sister.
Among the six sisters of the Earl’s family, the only one she
truly paid attention to was Jiang Si.

Such beauty, even knowing her limited prospects, still

instilled wariness in her as a fellow woman.

Jiang Pei’s face turned pale as she looked at Jiang Qian.

She couldn’t understand what was happening at all.

True, she was born to a concubine, but she and Jiang

Qian were both daughters of the second branch. Jiang
Qian had invited her first, and now she was sending her
back—was she completely disregarding her face?

Jiang Pei suddenly looked at Jiang Si.

Jiang Si still maintained her composed demeanor.

Jiang Pei’s heart sank.

She vaguely felt that she had been set up, but the trap
was one she had jumped into herself. Now she was left on
the verge of tears with nowhere to turn.

Seeing Jiang Qian about to call someone in, Jiang Pei

snapped back to reality.
Instead of pleading with Jiang Qian, she grabbed Jiang
Si’s sleeve and said pitifully, “Fourth Sister, I was wrong.”

Being able to bend and stretch was nothing for a

concubine-born daughter raised under Second Madam
Xiao.

Seeing no reaction from Jiang Si, Jiang Pei raised her

hand and slapped herself. “I’ve eaten too much dung; my
mouth stinks. I shouldn’t have angered Fourth Sister.
Please forgive me, Fourth Sister.”

That time when Grandmother had chased her out of the

Hall of Kindness, she had already lost a lot of face. If she
were sent back again this time, she might never be able to
go out again.

As the sound of slaps rang out, Jiang Si watched coldly,

speechless.

No wonder someone else’s concubine-born daughter

married well, while she had married twice—once to
become a living widow, and once to be trapped to death.

People were different.

“Fourth Sister, you see—” Jiang Qian was pleased to see
Jiang Pei confront Jiang Si.

She had invited these people, and being forced by Jiang

Si to send Jiang Pei away was no different from slapping
her face. Yet she could only accept it.

Now, the lower Jiang Pei’s posture, the more

unreasonable Jiang Si appeared.

“Does Sixth Sister not want to go back?” Jiang Si suddenly

asked.

Jiang Pei instinctively shook her head. “I want to return

with my sisters.”

“Since Sixth Sister has fulfilled the bet, do as you please,”

Jiang Si relented.

Seeing Jiang Si give in, Jiang Qian smoothly said with a

smile, “Alright, we’re all sisters. No conflict can’t be
resolved. It’s better to go together and return together. I’ve
prepared some food in the flower hall. Why don’t you
sisters join me for a bite?”

“Second Sister, shouldn’t we pay our respects to the

Marchioness?” Fifth Miss Jiang Li asked timidly.
“No need. The Marchioness is busy. I’ve already
mentioned that I’m hosting you for a short stay, and she
said you should feel free to do as you like.”

Jiang Li seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and lowered

her eyes without further comment.

Jiang Pei’s face was still red from the slaps, and she also
lowered her head as she followed the others to the flower
hall.

In the flower hall, the dining table was already set, and
soon maids entered in a line carrying fruits, pastries, and
fish dishes.

“Please sit, sisters,” Jiang Qian said, entertaining

everyone with smiles and laughter as if nothing had
happened.

However, the atmosphere had indeed cooled, and the

fresh fruits tasted bland in their mouths.

Jiang Qian didn’t mind this.

For her, as long as Jiang Si had come, her goal was

achieved. She had no interest in anything else.
Footsteps sounded, and a young man walked in smiling:
“Is the food ready? I’m starving—”

Halfway through his sentence, he seemed to notice Jiang

Si and the others, and his words abruptly stopped.

Jiang Pei was the first to stand up. “Brother-in-law.”

Jiang Si greeted the man along with Jiang Qiao and the
others.

This slightly thin, pale-faced young man was Cao Xingyu,

the heir of Marquis Changxing.

As Jiang Si and the others bowed their heads in greeting,

Cao Xingyu remained silent, taking the opportunity to stare
directly at Jiang Si.

He had been obsessed with this exceptionally beautiful

sister-in-law since he first saw her at his wedding to Jiang
Qian.

At that time, this little girl was just coming of age, standing
emotionlessly with her sisters, like a snow bud on a
mountain. That kind of cool beauty had precisely tickled
his fancy.
At that moment, he thought that he would eventually have
this little girl, or it wouldn’t be worth being a man.

Watching Cao Xingyu’s behavior, Jiang Qian was furious.

After all, she had been through, she didn’t care what kind
of woman this man fancied, but that didn’t mean she could
tolerate Cao Xingyu acting foolishly in front of everyone.

She had invited her sisters over, and if something

happened, her grandmother would eat her alive.

“I forgot to send someone to tell you that my sisters have

come,” Jiang Qian quickly walked to Cao Xingyu’s side,
secretly pinching him under the cover of her sleeve.

Cao Xingyu finally came to his senses, looking refreshed.

“I didn’t know the sisters were coming at this time. It was
rude of me. Qian’er, entertain your sisters well. I’ll eat in
the study.”

Jiang Qian breathed a sigh of relief. “Take care, Young

Master.”

With Cao Xingyu’s coming and going, the atmosphere

livened up.
“Second Sister, does Brother-in-law eat with you every
day?”

“Yes,” Jiang Qian smiled.

“Brother-in-law and Second Sister are so loving,” Jiang Pei

smiled.

Jiang Qian’s hand tightened on her chopsticks, her

knuckles turning slightly white, but her face maintained a
smile. “Don’t tease Second Sister.”

The meal was finished in a relatively harmonious

atmosphere. Jiang Qian held her teacup and took a few
sips before suggesting, “The garden of the Marquis’s
manor is quite beautiful. Don’t be constrained, sisters. Go
and enjoy yourselves.”

“Isn’t Second Sister going?” Jiang Li asked.

Jiang Qian smiled slightly. “Of course, I’ll accompany you

sisters for a stroll.”

Hearing that Jiang Qian was also going, Jiang Li breathed

a sigh of relief.
Perhaps out of habitual caution, she always felt a bit
uneasy in unfamiliar places.

“These rocks in the artificial mountain were brought from

South Lake. The pavilion on the mountain is called the
Eight Sounds Pavilion. This season is perfect for sitting up
there…” Jiang Qian said gently, playing the role of a good
older sister.

Jiang Qiao pointed and said, “Second Sister, those

peonies are blooming beautifully. Let’s go appreciate the
flowers first.”

Jiang Qian paused, then smiled. “I’m not very fond of the
scent of peonies. How about this: I’ll rest in the pavilion,
and you all can do as you please.”

“Second Sister, I’d like to sit in the pavilion too,” Jiang Pei
immediately said.

Jiang Li, adhering to the principle of avoiding trouble,

nodded in agreement.

Jiang Qiao was very eager to see the peonies. Seeing that
no one else was going, she pulled Jiang Si and asked,
“Shall we go appreciate the flowers?”
“Let’s go,” Jiang Si nodded readily.

Jiang Qian calmly watched Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao walk

towards the peony patch, her eyes growing colder.

“It’s quite rare for the Marquis’s peonies to bloom so well

at this time,” Jiang Qiao said, standing among the flowers
and taking a deep breath. She then sighed, “Such a large
patch of peonies, but the fragrance is a bit too strong.”

Amidst the deep red and light green, Jiang Si’s face
suddenly turned as white as snow.

In the thick, sweet fragrance, she smelled the scent of

death.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 67: Bones Buried Under Flowers
Jiang Si’s innate sensitivity to scents, enhanced by secret
techniques learned from the Wu Miao elder, bordered on
the miraculous to ordinary people. Even amidst the lush,
fragrant peonies, she could detect faint traces of a foul
odor permeating the air.

She recognized that smell—it was the stench of decay.

Jiang Si had come to Marquis Chang Xing’s mansion,

knowingly venturing into the tiger’s den, to investigate why
Chang Xing Marquis’s heir Cao Xingyu and Jiang Qian
had committed such an unthinkable act against her. It was
a knot in her heart that she needed to unravel and see
those who harmed her punished; otherwise, she would
never find peace.

Some things can be left in the past, but others must be

confronted and resolved to break free from nightmares. So
she had come of her own accord, approaching this place
and this couple voluntarily.

Though well-prepared, she hadn’t expected to find

corpses buried beneath this vibrant peony garden.

Jiang Si unconsciously ground her toe into the soil. The

stench of decay had seeped into the earth and even
permeated the layered petals of the peonies. This odor
couldn’t have formed in just a few days, yet it carried an
eerie freshness as if a corpse had been recently buried
and stunning peonies had bloomed from its remains.

Jiang Si’s face paled further. By now, she wasn’t afraid,

but the waves of putrid smell made her nauseous, and she
could barely control the urge to retch.

“Fourth Sister, are you unwell?” Jiang Qiao noticed Jiang

Si’s discomfort and shifted her gaze from the beautiful,
almost bewitching peonies.
Jiang Si took a deep breath and managed a smile. “I’m
fine.”

Jiang Qiao frowned at Jiang Si, casually plucking a peony

petal and rubbing it between her fingers. Pale red juice
stained Jiang Qiao’s fair fingertips.

Jiang Si’s eyes fell on Jiang Qiao’s hand.

Jiang Qiao tossed the crushed petal into the wind, sniffed
her fingertips, and said with a smile, “It’s strange. Though I
love peonies, I don’t care for their scent. Fourth Sister, is it
the fragrance that’s making you uncomfortable?”

Thinking of the pervasive stench of decay and looking at

the faint red on Jiang Qiao’s fingertips, Jiang Si bit her lip
hard to suppress her nausea. She forced a smile and said,
“Many scents don’t agree with me.”

“Then let’s go. You should have said something earlier; I

wouldn’t have brought you here,” Jiang Qiao said. Though
they often quarreled at the Earl’s mansion, she naturally
drew closer to Jiang Si when outside. Sisters from the
same household should look out for each other in public.
Jiang Qiao was outgoing and straightforward but not
foolish. She had long sensed something odd in Jiang
Qian’s unusual attitude toward Jiang Si.

Jiang Si remained still and changed her tone, “Although

many scents bother me, I find the peony fragrance quite
pleasant.”

She needed to determine whether human remains or

animal carcasses were buried beneath these peonies. To
investigate further, she couldn’t tell Jiang Qiao that the
peony scent bothered her. Otherwise, approaching this
area again would seem suspicious.

“Fourth Sister, tell me, what’s going on between you and

Second Sister?” Jiang Qiao glanced at Jiang Qian and the
others on the artificial mountain and asked in a low voice.

Seeing Jiang Si’s silence, Jiang Qiao sneered, “You asked

her to send Sixth Sister away, and she didn’t even say
‘no.’ It’s too strange. Don’t tell me Second Sister treats you
better than her sisters. I’m not a fool.”

After a long silence, Jiang Si gazed at the blooming

peonies and sighed softly, “Indeed, I find it strange too.
Third Sister, did you know that Second Sister invited me to
visit the Marquis’s mansion even before Grandmother’s
eyes became ill?”

Jiang Qiao was stunned, growing more curious. They had

all received invitations together, unaware that Jiang Qian
had invited Jiang Si earlier.

Did this mean the Second Sister had intended to invite

Jiang Si all along?

This thought crossed Jiang Qiao’s mind, and she looked at

Jiang Si inquiringly.

Jiang Si smiled faintly. “So I wanted to test how sincere

Second Sister’s invitation was. I didn’t expect—”

“You didn’t expect Second Sister to be so sincere,” Jiang

Qiao finished.

“Yes, very sincere indeed,” Jiang Si said with a mocking

smile at the corner of her mouth.

She was determined to expose Jiang Qian and her

husband’s hidden misdeeds, so she didn’t mind letting
Jiang Qiao glimpse a bit of the truth.
“But why?” Jiang Qiao kicked at fallen petals and leaves,
her expression growing more serious. “I can’t help feeling
it’s nothing good. Fourth Sister, stay close to me while
we’re at the Marquis’s mansion. We’ll leave after a couple
of days.”

Though Jiang Si knew Jiang Qiao had a sharp tongue but

a soft heart, she hadn’t expected her to set aside their
differences so quickly and look out for her. Touched, she
demurred, “That’s not necessary. I’m here as an honored
guest. Surely Second Sister wouldn’t mistreat me?”

Her plans were too dangerous; she wanted Jiang Qiao to

sense something was amiss so she could speak up when
the truth was revealed, but she didn’t want to drag her into
danger now.

Angered by Jiang Si’s words, Jiang Qiao poked her

forehead and snapped, “Are you stupid?”

The young girl’s skin was delicate, and Jiang Qiao’s poke
left a red mark on her smooth forehead.

Jiang Qiao opened her mouth, then closed it, kicking at

nearby leaves in frustration. She hadn’t realized Jiang Si
was so fragile—one touch left a red mark as if she had
bullied her.
“Oh—” Jiang Qiao bent down to pick up an object from the
ground. “What’s this?”

In Jiang Qiao’s hand was a hairpin gleaming with an

antique luster in the sunlight.

“What material is this hairpin made of? It’s neither gold nor
silver…” Jiang Qiao examined the hairpin, puzzled.

Jiang Si’s gaze suddenly turned cold.

It was a copper hairpin!

Copper hairpins were common. Ordinary women who

loved beauty but couldn’t afford gold or silver hairpins
often chose copper, wood, or bamboo as alternatives.

But where were they? This was Marquis Chang Xing’s

mansion. Even the well-regarded maids and servants
wore gold hairpins gifted by their masters; those of slightly
lower status wore silver. The maids and servants who did
the hardest, dirtiest work wouldn’t settle for copper
hairpins if they didn’t have silver ones—they’d prefer
bright, delicate pearl or silk flowers.
Jiang Si’s heart raced as she formed a bold conjecture: if
human remains were buried beneath these peonies, could
this copper hairpin belong to the victim?

“It seems to be a copper hairpin,” Jiang Qiao finally

recognized after examining it.

Just then, a cool, amused voice spoke up: “What are my

two dear sisters doing?”

Startled, Jiang Si snatched the copper hairpin from Jiang

Qiao’s hand with lightning speed and tucked it into her
sleeve.

Not far away, Chang Xing Marquis’s heir Cao Xingyu,

dressed in a moon-white robe, stood watching them with a
smile.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 68: Nightfall
Cao Xingyu, the heir of Marquis Changxing, stood not far
away, a faint smile on his lips and a distant look in his
eyes.

The peonies were in full bloom, their fragrance rich and

intoxicating. Jiang Si stood among them, feeling a chill rise
from the depths of her heart.

Almost instinctively, Jiang Qiao stepped forward to shield

Jiang Si behind her. “Oh, it’s Brother-in-law. Fourth Sister
and I were just admiring the flowers.”
Cao Xingyu chuckled lightly, his eyes sparkling like gold
flecks in the sunlight, appearing exceptionally kind.
“Indeed, these peonies are blooming more beautifully than
elsewhere. Please, sisters, take your time enjoying them.”

He approached step by step.

The copper hairpin in his sleeve was hard and cold

against the young girl’s soft skin.

Jiang Si tightened her grip on the hairpin, watching Cao

Xingyu coldly as he drew near.

Cao Xingyu was rather thin, his moon-white robe giving

him a delicate beauty that could evoke sympathy.

Who would have thought such a person could commit

such an unforgivable act?

“A beast in human clothing,” Jiang Si suddenly thought.

The uncontrollable fear stemming from her past life’s
trauma instantly vanished, leaving only determination.

She was resolved to strip this beast of his facade and

prevent him from harming any more innocent women!
Cao Xingyu came closer but didn’t approach the two
directly. He changed direction while still some distance
from the peony bushes.

There was nothing improper about it, just a seemingly

ordinary chance encounter.

Cao Xingyu gradually moved away without looking back.

Jiang Qiao watched the moon-white figure recede for a

moment, then turned to Jiang Si with a pout. “Why did you
grab the hairpin just now?”

Jiang Si’s expression had already returned to normal. She

smiled and said, “The Young Master’s sudden appearance
startled me, and I instinctively threw the hairpin away.”

“You threw it away?” Jiang Qiao scanned the area.

“Where did it go?”

Jiang Si casually pointed. “I think it went over there.”

She indicated a clump of bushes. Jiang Qiao looked and

lost interest. “Forget it. Even if it were a gold or silver
hairpin instead of copper, we shouldn’t take something we
just found lying around.”
Cao Xingyu’s sudden appearance had dampened Jiang
Qiao’s enthusiasm for flower viewing. “Let’s go find
Second Sister and the others at the pavilion on the
rockery.”

“Alright.” At this point, Jiang Si couldn’t possibly dig up the

soil under the peonies to investigate, so she suppressed
her urge to explore further and nodded.

Jiang Qiao took two steps forward before pausing, as if

talking to herself: “How strange that a copper hairpin
would fall right next to these peonies.”

Jiang Si, following behind, couldn’t help but laugh silently.

Jiang Qiao, though seemingly simple, was indeed no fool.

The Eight Tones Pavilion atop the rockery had stone

tables and benches, making it an excellent spot for
enjoying the cool summer air. Its elevated position offered
a panoramic view of the Marquis’s garden.

The earlier encounter between Cao Xingyu and the two

Jiang sisters in the flower garden had been fully visible
from this vantage point.
Jiang Qian didn’t even raise an eyebrow at the scene,
calmly sipping her clear tea.

Jiang Pei, eager to please Jiang Qian, rested one hand on

the railing and said pointedly, “Fourth Sister is truly
beautiful. Standing among the peonies, she’s more lovely
than the flowers themselves.”

She thought to herself, “Second Brother-in-law is refined

and gentle, and he’s the noble heir of Marquis Changxing.
He’s quite a catch. I don’t believe Second Sister isn’t
worried.”

After all, with Jiang Si’s looks, not only men but even
women couldn’t help but steal glances at her.

Jiang Qian set her teacup down on the stone table and,
instead of looking at Jiang Si in the flower garden below,
fixed her gaze on Jiang Pei.

Jiang Pei gradually became uncomfortable, unsure of

what she had said wrong.

Suddenly, Jiang Qian smiled. “Indeed, not just among us

sisters, but even in all of the capital, it would be hard to
find someone whose beauty surpasses Fourth Sister’s.”
She cast a fleeting glance at Jiang Si, who was now
walking towards them. “Having such a sister whose beauty
rivals that of the Goddess Luoshen is truly an honor for us
elder sisters.”

She had nothing to feel guilty about. Cao Xingyu had

always been a pervert who wouldn’t rest until he got his
hands on any woman he set his sights on. If anyone was
to blame, it was Jiang Si for being born too attractive,
especially now that she had lost the protection of her
engagement to the An Guo Duke’s household.

As Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao approached the pavilion, Jiang

Pei gave an awkward smile, not daring to speak further.
Her resentment towards Jiang Qian grew even more.

The second Sister came from a good background and

married well. She could afford to be so nonchalant.

Everyone appreciates beauty. Jiang Pei didn’t believe that

the Second Brother-in-law would be moved after frequent
contact with Jiang Si. She looked forward to seeing
Second Sister’s tears when that time came.

Jiang Pei’s thoughts were not without malice, as if she

could already see events unfolding, giving her a sense of
satisfaction.
“Why didn’t you two sisters stay out longer?” Jiang Qian
asked.

Jiang Qiao entered first, casually sitting on a stone bench

and enjoying the cool breeze. “The peonies are beautiful,
but their strong fragrance becomes overwhelming after a
while. We came up here for some fresh air.”

Jiang Qian glanced at the lush peony bushes in the

distance, a meaningful smile on her face. “Indeed, even
the most beautiful scenery becomes ordinary if you see it
too often. But those peonies are truly worth admiring.”

After sitting in the Eight Tones Pavilion for a while, Jiang

Qian led the group back to their living quarters and
arranged for maids to show Jiang Si and her sisters to
their rooms.

“The east and west side courtyards of the Young Master’s

residence have been empty. I had both courtyards
prepared before you arrived. Third Sister and Fourth Sister
will stay in the east courtyard, while Fifth Sister and Sixth
Sister will stay in the west courtyard. Is this arrangement
acceptable to everyone?”
Before anyone else could speak, Jiang Pei quickly said,
“We’ll follow Second Sister’s arrangements. Second Sister
is truly blessed; you’ve been married to Brother-in-law for
years, and he hasn’t taken a single concubine.”

Jiang Qian gave Jiang Pei a look, simply smiled, and

instructed the maids to lead the four sisters to their rooms
to rest.

Jiang Pei felt embarrassed and increasingly

uncomfortable. It was strange; her sweet talk had earned
her many favors from her stepmother, but why did she
keep hitting walls with Second Sister?

Everything she said should have been a source of pride

for a woman.

Jiang Si observed Jiang Pei’s frustration and almost

laughed out loud.

Poor Jiang Pei, unaware of the true situation, kept praising

Jiang Qian and the Young Master of Changxing’s loving
relationship, not realizing that every word was like a slap
to Jiang Qian’s face.

The east side courtyard of the Young Master’s residence

wasn’t large, but it was quiet and elegant. A crabapple tree
in the corner of the courtyard had already passed its
flowering season and was now bearing small green fruits.

“The bedding and curtains in both the east and west

rooms have been replaced with new ones,” the blue-clad
maid who led them asked with a smile. “Which young lady
would like the east room, and which the west?”

“Which room would Third Sister prefer?” For Jiang Si,

there was no difference between the east and west rooms.

Jiang Qiao’s response, however, surprised Jiang Si: “Why

bother? I’ll just sleep with Fourth Sister.”

The blue-clad maid was also taken aback and looked

towards Jiang Si.

“I’m used to sleeping alone…” Jiang Si began.

Jiang Qiao linked arms with Jiang Si, looking pitifully at

her. “I’m not used to new places and can only sleep well
with someone familiar nearby. Fourth Sister, please let me
sleep with you.”

Jiang Si, remembering Jiang Qiao’s subtle protection in

the garden earlier, almost nodded. But then she thought of
Jiang Qian and her husband, and her heart suddenly
hardened. She shook her head and said, “I still prefer to
sleep alone.”

“In that case, I’ll take the east room.”

The day passed uneventfully, and soon it was time to light

the lamps. Jiang Si, having finished washing up and
dressing for the night, was reclining on her bed reading a
book when she heard footsteps approaching, finally
stopping outside her door curtain.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 69: A Visitor
After a moment of tension, Jiang Si relaxed. Though
separated by an embroidered peony door curtain and
some distance, the familiar scent told her the person
behind it was Jiang Qiao.

The curtain was soon lifted, and Jiang Qiao entered

carrying a thin blanket, followed by two embarrassed-
looking maids.

“Fourth Sister, I really can’t sleep. Let me stay with you

tonight,” Jiang Qiao pleaded, quickly approaching Jiang
Si.

Jiang Si frowned.

“Fourth Sister, can you bear to see me sleepless all

night?”
While Jiang Si hesitated, Jiang Qiao had already
unceremoniously removed her shoes and sat on the bed,
seemingly determined to stay.

Jiang Si sighed, “Just one night. Tomorrow, Third Sister

will return to her room.”

“We’ll discuss that tomorrow,” Jiang Qiao said with a

triumphant smile, then glanced at the two maids who had
followed her. “Alright, you two can rest outside.”

As it was a short stay, Jiang Qian’s invitation had

specifically mentioned that the sisters should come alone,
with everything prepared for them. Thus, the four sisters
hadn’t brought their maids, and these two were assigned
by Jiang Qian.

Neither Jiang Qiao nor Jiang Si was accustomed to

sleeping in the same room with unfamiliar maids.

The two maids looked at each other, hesitating.

“What’s the matter?” Jiang Qiao’s expression darkened.

The maids hastily curtsied and withdrew.

Jiang Qiao lay down, complaining, “It’s not as convenient
as having our maids.”

Jiang Si smiled, “We’ll have to make do. We may find

them inconvenient, but these maids were carefully
selected by Second Sister. Third Sister, come sleep on the
inner side.”

Jiang Qiao pulled up the brocade quilt and shook her

head, “I’m used to sleeping on the outer side.”

“I didn’t know Third Sister had so many requirements for

sleeping.”

“Yes, I know it’s not a good habit, but I can’t change it.
Fourth Sister, why are you still wearing your outer
clothes?”

“I’m not used to sleeping in just my undergarments in an

unfamiliar place.”

“It seems we all have our habits. It’s late, let’s sleep.”
Jiang Qiao chuckled and blew out the lamp by the bed.

The room was pitch black for a moment, then gradually

brightened as moonlight from outside cast everything in a
hazy silver glow.
“Fourth Sister.”

“Hm?”

After a moment of silence in the darkness, Jiang Qiao

turned to face outward. “Nothing, let’s sleep.”

Soon, the sound of steady breathing filled the unfamiliar,

dim darkness.

Jiang Si gazed at the silver hooks of the canopy, silently

sighing.

Though she had taken risks, she naturally had the means
to protect herself. However, she hadn’t expected Jiang
Qiao, with whom she usually didn’t get along, to suddenly
become so clingy.

Jiang Qian and her husband’s target was her; with Jiang
Qiao constantly by her side, there would undoubtedly be
more danger.

She did not doubt the couple’s shamelessness. If they

could harm her, they certainly wouldn’t hesitate to hurt
Jiang Qiao.
Just this one night—tomorrow night, she absolutely
couldn’t allow Jiang Qiao to sleep with her again.

As for tonight—

A cold glint flashed in Jiang Si’s eyes.

If all remained calm tonight, so be it. But if that couple had

any schemes, she would never allow them to harm an
innocent person.

As the night deepened, Jiang Si closed her eyes,

gradually drifting off to sleep.

Faint footsteps sounded, and Jiang Si’s eyes flew open,

then quickly closed again.

She had indeed underestimated the shamelessness and

boldness of the Chang Xing Marquis’s heir. It was only the
first night, yet he was already here, unable to wait!

Was he so reckless as to force himself on her?

This thought flashed through her mind, but Jiang Si quickly

dismissed it.
The Chang Xing Marquis’s heir wasn’t insane after all.
Sneaking into his sister-in-law’s room in the middle of the
night with ill intentions was at least grounds for exile.

Of course, Jiang Si couldn’t cry out to prove his guilt; that

would ruin both her and Jiang Qiao’s reputations forever.

As for her previous life—

Jiang Si smiled wryly.

In her previous life, they had merely taken advantage of

her status as a new widow, certain she wouldn’t dare
speak up if wronged.

Wanting to save face while satisfying his dirty desires—the

Chang Xing Marquis’s heir had quite the scheme.

The footsteps drew closer, then stopped. A corner of the

hanging gauze curtain was gently lifted.

Jiang Si kept her eyes closed, her hand beneath the

brocade quilt lightly caressing the gold bracelet on her
wrist.
Though rationally, she believed the Chang Xing Marquis’s
heir wouldn’t do anything tonight, she still had to guard
against him suddenly losing control.

Living a second life, she had learned one truth: mountains

may crumble, waters may dry up, but only oneself can be
truly relied upon.

The small inner chamber seemed to grow stifling with the

addition of a man—the man Jiang Si despised most.
There was a suffocating, nauseating feeling in the air.

Jiang Si remained outwardly calm, silently waiting for his

next move.

There was no next move. The Chang Xing Marquis’s heir

stood motionless, only his breathing gradually quickening.

To Jiang Si, this breathing sounded like thunder, though in

reality, it wasn’t loud enough to wake someone in deep
sleep.

The sound of Jiang Qiao’s steady, prolonged breathing

beside her slightly reassured Jiang Si.
She couldn’t imagine how Jiang Qiao would react if she
suddenly opened her eyes to find a man standing by the
bed.

If such an accident were to occur, she would have no

choice but to incapacitate the Chang Xing Marquis’s heir
first.

Jiang Si didn’t want that situation to arise.

It was too easy to kill a person, but it would implicate them

while staying at the Chang Xing Marquis’s mansion. What
she wanted was for the Chang Xing Marquis’s heir to lose
his reputation and status. Even if he were to die, it should
be a death scorned by all.

Cao Xingyu stood for a long time, his eyes long adjusted
to the darkness, almost greedily staring at the sleeping
girl’s face.

He had waited for this day for far too long—so long that
the people and things that used to excite him could no
longer stir his impulses.

Cao Xingyu swallowed hard, clenching his fists to resist

the urge to reach out and touch her.
His gaze shifted to Jiang Qiao.

If this troublesome girl wasn’t sleeping here, he might

have been able to caress that face tonight.

Yes, they were sleeping so soundly; surely a light touch

wouldn’t matter.

As this thought arose, Cao Xingyu’s eyes suddenly grew

fervent. Even with her eyes closed, Jiang Si could feel
those two burning gazes.

Jiang Si lightly tapped the gold bracelet on her wrist.

Cao Xingyu licked his lips and reached out his hand.

The tension only excited him more.

Suddenly, Jiang Qiao, sleeping on the outer side, turned

over, mumbling something in her sleep.

Cao Xingyu withdrew his hand, the excitement in his eyes

gradually obscured by a thick fog.

Now was not the time!

He would wait patiently until Jiang Si was married and
perhaps even had children. It would be easier to make his
move when she wouldn’t seek death over losing her purity
as a young girl would.

Girls from noble families were so troublesome, unlike

those from common families who could be quietly brought
into the Marquis’s mansion if he fancied them.

Cao Xingyu irritably raised an eyebrow, cast one last

lingering look at the girl’s exquisitely flawless face, and
quietly retreated.

Jiang Si slowly opened her eyes, watching the slightly

swaying door curtain with a cold gaze.

Since he was so impatient, she decided not to wait any

longer. Tonight, she would investigate the garden.

Just then, the supposedly sleeping Jiang Qiao suddenly

sat up.

Expedition to the Garden
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 70: A Night Expedition to the Garden
Jiang Qiao seemed to be desperately trying to control her
movements. Though she rose abruptly, she made little
noise, only breathing heavily as if she had exhausted all
her strength.

Jiang Si’s mind raced.

At this point, how could she not guess that Jiang Qiao had
been awake all along?

Jiang Qiao’s current state undoubtedly meant she had

discovered the Young Master of Changxing’s arrival.

Jiang Si instinctively closed her eyes, hearing muffled

sobs.

She sighed inwardly: Jiang Qiao was terrified.

It could be said that Jiang Qiao’s reaction was already

quite good. In the dead of night, with a man intruding into
a lady’s chamber, other women would have lost control
and screamed.

The sobbing was very soft; if Jiang Si hadn’t already been

awake, she wouldn’t have heard it at all.

After a moment, the sobbing stopped, and Jiang Si could

feel Jiang Qiao turning her head, her gaze falling on her.
At this moment, Jiang Si hesitated, unsure whether to
continue pretending to sleep or to be frank with Jiang
Qiao.

As she wavered, Jiang Qiao whispered, “Fourth Sister, the

Young Master of Changxing truly has designs on you!”

Hearing this, Jiang Si immediately opened her eyes.

Jiang Qiao was startled, staring blankly at Jiang Si.

Jiang Si simply sat up.

After a while, Jiang Qiao came to her senses and

murmured, “Fourth Sister, how are you awake?”

In the dim moonlight filtering through the window lattice,

Jiang Si could see the bloodless face of the girl close by,
and her hand involuntarily raised in nervousness.

Jiang Qiao’s hand was trembling, tightly clutching a gold

hairpin. She was still shaken by the Young Master of
Changxing’s earlier visit.
Even so, she was trying hard to control her body’s
instinctive reactions, as if afraid of transmitting this fear to
Jiang Si.

“Third Sister, I’ve been awake for a while,” Jiang Si said,

feeling a myriad of emotions. She decided not to keep
Jiang Qiao in the dark any longer.

She couldn’t handle everything perfectly, but at least she

could try to empathize.

Hearing Jiang Si’s words, Jiang Qiao’s grip on the gold

hairpin loosened, and she suddenly embraced Jiang Si.
Her whole body trembled like a withered leaf clinging to a
branch in the autumn wind. “Fourth Sister, the Young
Master of Changxing is a beast!”

Jiang Si didn’t respond to Jiang Qiao’s words, instead

asking, “Third Sister, did you already suspect this?”

Jiang Qiao released her embrace, wiped away the tears

from the corners of her eyes, and after a moment of
silence, nodded. “I wasn’t certain, but I couldn’t help but
be suspicious. Earlier, when we were dining in the flower
hall and the Young Master of Changxing came to eat,
Second Sister said she forgot to inform him. I felt
something was amiss then. Knowing Second Sister’s
character, how could she make such an oversight with
four sisters visiting?”

Jiang Si was somewhat surprised.

She hadn’t expected Third Sister to have sensed

something wrong from that moment, which was completely
different from the impression she usually gave.

From her previous life until now, Jiang Si had always seen
Jiang Qiao as someone sharp-tongued yet kind-hearted,
generally a guileless young girl.

She truly hadn’t understood Jiang Qiao well enough.

“Then there was the incident in the garden. Although the

Young Master of Changxing appeared to encounter us by
chance, even just greeting us without approaching before
leaving, very proper indeed—” At this point, Jiang Qiao
gave a cold laugh, “The peony garden in the Changxing
Marquis’s residence is so attractive, if he were truly
proper, as the master of the household, wouldn’t he have
thought that we would most likely be there admiring the
flowers? Yet he appeared precisely then. At that moment,
I was certain it was deliberate…”

“Third Sister insisted on sleeping with me to protect me,

didn’t you?” Jiang Si asked softly.

Jiang Qiao’s face reddened, and she said embarrassedly,

“Fourth Sister, you’re so beautiful. I guessed that if the
Young Master of Changxing had any ill intentions, it would
be towards you. I thought if we stayed together, he
wouldn’t dare to act recklessly. Who knew that beast
would actually—”

At this point, Jiang Qiao couldn’t continue. Her whole body

trembled slightly, clearly still in shock.

“Fourth Sister, let’s go back tomorrow!” Jiang Qiao

grasped Jiang Si’s hand.

Jiang Si sighed, “Second Sister will surely try to keep us

here.”

“Surely she can’t forcibly prevent us from leaving?” Jiang

Qiao said, then suddenly froze as if realizing something.
Her expression changed dramatically, her lips trembling,
“F-Fourth Sister, Second Sister, she—”
Could it be what she was thinking? If it were true, it would
be too terrifying and absurd.

Jiang Qiao involuntarily clutched her rapidly beating heart,

not daring to think any deeper.

Jiang Si’s expression remained calm as still water.

“Second Sister invited me here with great sincerity.”

Jiang Qiao was stunned again, looking at Jiang Si in

disbelief. “Fourth Sister, you had already guessed?”

Seeing Jiang Si nod slightly, Jiang Qiao’s hand waved and

then fell limply. She said angrily, “Are you stupid? If you
had guessed, why did you still come? Isn’t this walking
right into their trap?”

Jiang Si lowered her gaze and remained silent.

She had nothing to say.

To others, it might seem like walking into a trap, but to her,

this journey into the tiger’s den was necessary.

Currently, the Young Master of Changxing was restrained

because she was unmarried, but what about later? Should
she pin her hopes on him having a change of heart and
sparing her?

Rather than waiting passively to save herself in the future,

she preferred to actively resolve the issue with this beast
in human clothing now.

“I don’t know what you’re thinking!” Jiang Qiao poked

Jiang Si’s forehead with her finger, fuming.

“Don’t be angry, Third Sister. I just thought that you can’t

be on guard forever against a thief, so I might as well
come and see what they’re really up to.”

“But you’re the one who will suffer!”

Jiang Si smiled faintly. “Second Sister invited us here with

formal invitation cards. At least for now, she won’t let me
truly come to harm.”

“Then what do you plan to do? That beast dared to sneak

in tonight; tomorrow night, he might go even further. At
that time, you’ll have to suffer in silence. You can’t exactly
make a fuss about it, can you?” Jiang Qiao gripped Jiang
Si’s hand tightly. “Fourth Sister, let’s leave tomorrow,
alright?”
Jiang Si firmly shook her head. “We can’t.”

Right now, Jiang Qiao is seen as an outsider in the eyes

of Jiang Qian and her husband. But if tomorrow Jiang
Qiao insisted on leaving, given that they had shared a
room tonight and the Young Master of Changxing had
visited, they might suspect that Jiang Qiao had discovered
something.

If that were the case, Jiang Qiao would be in danger of

being silenced.

Jiang Si had the means to protect herself, but Jiang Qiao,

despite her perceptiveness, was just a young girl without
any fighting skills. Jiang Si had dared to enter the
Changxing Marquis’s residence to resolve the problem
completely, not leaving endless troubles behind.

“Then what do you want to do?” Jiang Qiao was furious.

“Third Sister, give me some time. I will deal with him.”

“Don’t do anything reckless!”

Jiang Si smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry, Third Sister. I

understand the principle of not taking on tasks beyond my
capabilities. It’s late, let’s sleep.”
Suddenly, Jiang Qiao felt her eyelids grow heavy. She
mumbled a response and soon fell into a deep sleep.

Jiang Si gave Jiang Qiao a long look, then stepped around

her and got out of bed. She put on her soft-soled
embroidered shoes and walked out.

In the outer room slept the maid Jiang Qian had sent to
serve Jiang Si. Jiang Si walked past her with extremely
light steps, lightly flicking her fingernail. A powder, hidden
by the darkness, silently scattered.

The moon gate of the Young Master’s residence led

directly to the back garden. Jiang Si moved swiftly through
it, arriving at the peony patch in the garden.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 71: A Fresh Corpse
The full moon hung in the sky, its light frosty. The peony
petals were slightly closed as if the charming, lively girls
from daytime had removed their finery and fallen into
slumber.
Jiang Si took a light sniff and her expression immediately
darkened. Without further hesitation, she retrieved the
gardener’s spade that had been left by the wall for who
knows how long. She slowly circled the peony bushes,
searching for the strongest source of the putrid smell.

Soon, Jiang Si stopped at a spot. In the moonlight, she

crouched down to examine it. The soil there looked looser
as if it had been recently turned.

Jiang Si tightened her grip on the spade. She had a vague

idea of what she might find beneath these peonies, and it
would be a lie to say she wasn’t nervous. However, she
had to see for herself to put her mind at ease.

Jiang Si dug in with the spade, scooping up a shovelful of

earth. Without a lantern and only moonlight to see by, she
couldn’t discern the soil’s color. She gritted her teeth and
continued digging, shovelful after shovelful, as the stench
around her grew stronger.

As the mounds of earth on either side grew higher,

another thrust of the spade suddenly hit something. Jiang
Si’s heart raced as she immediately stopped to look.
Among the dark yellowish soil, she could make out an
object but couldn’t identify it. Jiang Si steadied herself and
leaned in for a closer look, finally recognizing what it was.

It was a human hand!

Jiang Si jerked backward, her heart pounding like thunder.

She was certain it was a human hand. Buried beneath
these alluringly blooming peonies was not some cat or
dog, but a human corpse!

However, this wasn’t enough. This was the back garden of

the Chang Xing Marquis’s mansion. Even if the buried
corpse were exposed, the mansion could still find a
scapegoat. Who could prove that the victim beneath the
peonies was killed by the Chang Xing Marquis’s heir? If
the mansion insisted it was the work of a servant, they had
a hundred ways to exonerate the heir. At most, the Chang
Xing Marquis’s household would suffer a reputation for
poor management.

She couldn’t alert them yet!

This thought flashed through Jiang Si’s mind. Disregarding

her nausea and fear, she quickly used the spade to refill
the hole she had dug.
The moon retreated behind clouds, deepening the night’s
darkness.

Just as she filled in the last shovelful of earth, Jiang Si

suddenly froze. She smelled fresh blood!

Although she heard no other sounds, her nose couldn’t be

deceived. More surprisingly, the smell of blood was
growing stronger, meaning its source was getting closer.

Jiang Si gripped the spade tightly and quickly crouched

down, using the peony bushes to barely conceal her form.
She peered through the branches toward the direction of
the smell.

Her eyes suddenly widened.

People were coming!

Two figures, one in front and one behind, were carrying

something in her direction.

At that moment, the moon emerged from behind the

clouds. In its light, Jiang Si could see they were two young
men dressed as servants.

What they were carrying—

Jiang Si stared fixedly at the object between the two men.
With the strong smell of blood constantly assaulting her
senses, she was certain of what it was.

It was a corpse wrapped in bedsheets!

At this time, in this place, with that pungent smell of blood,

she certainly wouldn’t naively believe the person wrapped
in the sheets was still alive.

Were they here to bury a body?

Jiang Si’s mind raced as she watched the two servants

draw nearer. Though shocked, she wasn’t panicked. If
worst came to worst, she could handle two ordinary
servants.

Of course, for Jiang Si now, not being discovered was the

best outcome.

As the two servants came closer, Jiang Si grew calmer,

even her thundering heartbeat returning to normal. Danger
always coexisted with opportunity. Though the sudden
appearance of these two brought the risk of discovery, it
also gave her a chance to learn more.
The two servants stopped not far from the peony bushes
and set down their burden. One of them said in a low
voice, “Let’s get to work. The sooner we finish, the sooner
we can go back.”

The other grumbled, “I thought this girl would live a few

more days. Who knew the young master would finish her
off today? Such bad luck. I had gone to bed early
tonight…”

Peering through gaps in the foliage, Jiang Si carefully

observed the two servants. She noticed their feet were
wrapped in soft cloth, and their faces showed no signs of
tension as they spoke.

A chill ran through Jiang Si’s heart.

Knowing to wrap their feet in soft cloth to reduce noise and

showing no nervousness indicated that they were quite
experienced in burying bodies in the dead of night. And
this experience meant that countless bodies had been
buried this way.

“Stop complaining. The young master went out tonight and

came back looking upset. He probably had something that
didn’t go his way and took it out on this girl. We can only
say she was fated to die today.”
“Brother Lu, I don’t know why, but I feel uneasy. Do you
think we’ll face retribution for doing this so many times?”

Hidden behind the flowers, Jiang Si bit her lip and smiled
coldly. She would ensure they faced retribution!

It was clear now that after leaving her room, the Chang
Xing Marquis’s heir, unable to vent his evil desires, had
targeted the now-dead girl before them.

From the servants’ conversation, she could confirm that

the dead girl wasn’t a maid from the mansion, but an
innocent girl from outside.

“Retribution? Do you believe in that? In the past two years,

we’ve buried at least eight or ten bodies of the young
master. Have you seen any of them turn into vengeful
ghosts seeking revenge?” The other servant dismissed the
idea. “Besides, the young master killed them. We’re just
helping bury the bodies. We’re letting them rest in peace,
so you could say we’re doing a good deed. How could we
face retribution?”

There was one thing the servant didn’t dare say aloud: If
anyone were to face retribution, it would be the young
master first.
Jiang Si’s expression darkened as she listened.

She was right to decide to deal with the Chang Xing

Marquis’s heir, this beast, as soon as possible. Otherwise,
who knew how many more girls he would harm?

“You’re right. Alright, let’s get to work.” The previously

worried servant walked in Jiang Si’s direction.

Jiang Si gently twisted her gold bracelet, quickly

considering which drug would be most suitable to deal
with these two.

Just then, the servant called Lu shouted, “Let’s change

locations. We buried someone there not long ago. Oh
right, that girl’s family sold tofu.”

The other servant sighed, “Actually, that girl was quite

pitiful. I saw her selling tofu with her mother…”

Lu snorted, “If the young master hadn’t noticed her, how

would she have ended up here? Anzi, what’s wrong with
you today? You’re being so sentimental.”

“Ah, Zi Ying and I got together today.”

“Oh, you’ve tasted a woman’s flavor and now you know
how to cherish them. But if you keep dawdling, it’ll be
daybreak soon.”

“Let’s work, let’s work.” The two left the sheet-wrapped

corpse lying alone on the ground and walked towards the
corner of the wall.

“Hey, why is there one less spade?”

Phantom Firefly
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 72: Phantom Firefly
Jiang Si looked down at the trowel in her hand and
suddenly understood.

This wasn’t a gardener’s trowel carelessly left by the wall,

but a tool for the two servants to bury bodies at any time!

No wonder the trowel was so sturdy…

This thought flashed through Jiang Si’s mind, and she

knew she couldn’t wait any longer.

Neither of the servants was a fool. They were doing

heinous deeds and would be on high alert. The missing
trowel would certainly raise their suspicions.

Her hiding place was far from ideal, barely concealing her
form, relying only on the cover of night.
If the two servants came back to search, they would easily
find her. Escaping then would inevitably alert them.

Tonight’s discoveries were significant, and Jiang Si had no

intention of letting that happen.

In this critical moment, Jiang Si turned her right-hand palm

up, calming her mind. A faint light appeared in her palm,
quickly detaching and flying swiftly towards the two
servants.

At first glance, the dim light resembled common fireflies,

but much fainter.

Jiang Si hadn’t expected to use this so soon.

This was called a phantom firefly, made from a precise

mixture of white horn grass powder and various herb
powders, ignited with beef tallow to attract them, and fed
with human blood to lie dormant within a person’s body,
ready to be commanded.

The phantom firefly had no killing power but could induce

hallucinations. Of course, it couldn’t easily induce
hallucinations under all circumstances.
For instance, when a person was calm, the phantom firefly
would find it difficult to take advantage.

In the current situation, Jiang Si wasn’t worried at all. If

someone committing murder and arson showed no
psychological weakness, they would be a demon, not
human.

Although the phantom firefly was unusual, it was still a

type of insect, known as “gu” among the Wu Miao tribe.

Jiang Si was reluctant to call the phantom firefly “gu.” The

term “gu” often evoked mystery and even malevolence,
but these were simply lovely, beautiful little insects. Her
raising these insects was no different from others keeping
cats or dogs.

The phantom firefly flew to the two servants, entering

through their left ears and exiting through their right, finally
returning to Jiang Si’s palm, its faint light dissipating.

This process was extremely swift and completed in an

instant.

“Did we forget to put it back last time and leave it in the

flower bed?” An Zi wondered aloud.
Lu Zi, holding the trowel, frowned. “No, I clearly remember
putting it away. It couldn’t have been left in the flower
bed.”

“Then what’s going on?”

“Could someone have moved it?” Lu Zi’s tone suddenly

became tense.

“That’s impossible. The gardener tidied up once at the

beginning and we scolded him. He hasn’t dared to touch
anything since.”

“What if it was someone else?” Lu Zi said ominously.

An Zi was startled. “Brother Lu, don’t scare me.”

They weren’t nervous about burying bodies on this night

because they were used to it, but that didn’t mean they
wouldn’t be anxious if someone discovered them.

Lu Zi, thinking of something, suddenly turned around.

An Zi instinctively turned with him.

A woman stood before them.

The woman had disheveled hair, and a pale face, and in
the moonlight, they could see bloody gashes beneath her
tattered clothes. In her hand, she held a trowel.

The two men slowly turned their stiff necks to look at each
other, both seeing suffocating fear in the other’s eyes.

“G-ghost!” An Zi tried to scream, but fear choked his voice

to a whimper. He turned and ran.

Lu Zi fared no better. After a few steps, he fell hard,

scrambled to his feet, and fled without daring to look back,
desperately chasing after An Zi.

As the two disappeared, Jiang Si stepped out.

She didn’t know exactly what they had seen, but she could
guess it was probably the female corpse.

This was easy to deduce. The phantom firefly could

induce hallucinations, but not randomly. The visions were
triggered by the person’s most intense emotions at the
time, be it great joy, deep sorrow, or extreme fear.

The two servants had been discussing the missing trowel,

subconsciously including their suspicions about the female
corpse. The phantom firefly’s effect was merely to magnify
this most improbable guess in a specific scenario.

So when they turned around, they saw the image of the

female corpse holding the trowel.

Jiang Si approached the corpse with the trowel and

crouched down.

Even in the deep night, the pungent smell of blood was

unmistakable.

Jiang Si took a deep breath and lifted the sheet covering

the corpse.

She wanted to see the woman’s face.

The last person buried here should have been the

daughter of the suicidal woman she had encountered at
Willow Dyke. Knowing that poor girl’s identity, Jiang Si
didn’t believe it was a coincidence.

She preferred to believe it was fate, that heaven’s net

casts wide but lets nothing slip through.

Perhaps she could find clues about this corpse’s identity

as well.
Jiang Si knew she had to act quickly. The two men,
frightened by the illusion, would surely return once they
calmed down.

There was still a corpse lying there. No matter how scared

they were, they would come back to bury it. Otherwise, if
the body was discovered at dawn, they would be in
trouble.

The blood-stained sheet was lifted, revealing the corpse’s

face.

The face was clean, but the eyes were wide open, unable
to close in death.

It was a delicate and beautiful face, far too young, looking

no more than thirteen or fourteen years old.

Jiang Si felt a pain in her heart, almost biting her lower lip
to bleeding.

This was just a child. How could that beast do such a

thing?

Ignoring the overwhelming anger surging in her chest, she

quickly searched for clues on the corpse.
A small sachet hung around the corpse’s neck, visible
above the collarbone.

Without hesitation, Jiang Si tore off the sachet and tucked

it into her pocket, then continued her examination.

The corpse’s upper garments were in tatters, with only a

skirt below, hastily put on. Probably originally—

Jiang Si couldn’t bear to think further. Finding no other

clues, she placed the trowel in the corpse’s open right
hand.

Since the two servants would return, she might as well

frighten them again. When they saw the quietly lying
corpse indeed holding the trowel, they would no longer be
able to comfort themselves that it was just an illusion.

Suspicion breeds paranoia. After this night, the two

servants would likely have many sleepless nights.

Jiang Si pulled the sheet back over the corpse. As she did
so, her gaze inadvertently passed over the corpse’s left
hand, and she paused.
While the corpse’s right hand was limp and open, the left
hand was tightly clenched, as if grasping something.

Intrigued, Jiang Si quickly lifted the corpse’s left hand.

The poor girl had died recently, her hand still soft. Jiang Si
easily opened the tightly clenched fist to see what the girl
had been holding.

Physical Evidence
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 73: Physical Evidence
It was a small jade button with a bat pattern.

Exquisite and petite, it was undoubtedly valuable.

Jiang Si certainly didn’t believe this button had been torn

from the two servants’ clothing. The remaining answer
was obvious: the button had been ripped from the
murderer’s – that is, the Heir of Marquis Chang-xing’s –
garment by the ill-fated girl!

Clothes adorned with jade buttons would surely be made

of the finest fabric. The likelihood of discarding such a
garment due to a missing button was slim.

How would that piece of clothing be handled?

In all probability, it would first be stored away in a chest,

waiting to be fitted with a new jade button.
Of course, this was reasoning based on common sense.
Exceptions always exist. If the garment had been
damaged, it might have been discarded.

But even then, there was no cause for concern. Even if the
clothes were thrown away, the remaining jade buttons
wouldn’t be discarded; they would still be kept.

In other words, those jade bat-patterned buttons must

remain at the Heir of Chang-xing’s residence.

And this would serve as the most direct evidence pointing

to the Heir of Chang-xing as the murderer!

Suppressing her excitement, Jiang Si quickly closed the

female corpse’s left hand. She knew that not long after
death, rigor mortis would set in. By then, it would be
impossible to pry open the corpse’s left hand without
causing damage.

This immensely important jade bat-patterned button

needed to remain in the corpse’s hand as evidence to
identify the murderer shortly.

Having completed these tasks, Jiang Si pulled up the

bedsheet. As the blood-stained sheet was about to cover
the girl’s pretty yet pale and ashen face, Jiang Si let out a
soft sigh. She reached out her hand and placed it on the
girl’s eyes, murmuring, “Sister, rest assured. I will avenge
you. When that time comes, open your eyes and see.
There is always justice in this world.”

If there wasn’t, she would wrangle it from heaven itself!

Jiang Si withdrew her hand, and the girl’s wide-open eyes

closed.

At this moment, Jiang Si’s nose tingled, and her heart

seemed to burn with a fierce fire. She felt an urge to cry.

But now was not the time for cathartic tears.

Jiang Si covered the corpse with the bedsheet,

straightened up, and cast a final glance at the lonely body
lying on the ground. Then, she walked back calmly under
the moonlight.

Shortly after, two servants, hand in hand, inched their way

towards the peony bushes.

They weren’t holding hands out of affection, but because

they had nearly been frightened out of their wits earlier.
After calming down, they knew they had to return to deal
with the female corpse, yet neither wanted to walk in front.
So they decided to hold hands, sharing the burden – no
one at a disadvantage.

“Bro-Brother Lu-zi,” An-zi asked, trembling, his calves

shaking even more violently than his voice, “Tell me, was I
just seeing things earlier?”

Lu-zi appeared slightly better than An-zi, feigning

composure as he said, “What else could it be if not an
illusion? Ghosts don’t exist in this world!”

The young miss defiled to death by the Young Master

certainly couldn’t be left in the garden like this. If he didn’t
reassure An-zi, and An-zi became too scared to return,
wouldn’t the task of burying the corpse fall solely on him?

“But, but I saw a female ghost just now. Brother Lu-zi, you
didn’t see anything?” An-zi still couldn’t believe it, dragging
his feet.

Lu-zi rolled his eyes fiercely. “I didn’t see anything! If you

hadn’t suddenly screamed and run off earlier, why would I
have been scared into running with you?”

Of course, he had seen it, but could he tell An-zi that? Not!
“So… it was just my imagination?”

“What else could it be? Think about it, if vengeful spirits

existed in this world, why haven’t we heard a peep from all
those young misses buried under the peonies? Come on,
let’s hurry and bury the body so we can go back to sleep.
Keep dawdling, and it’ll be daybreak soon.”

An-zi hesitated before nodding, reluctantly convinced.

The two arrived at the peony bushes to find the female

corpse still lying in its original spot. Both let out sighs of
relief.

“Let’s get to work,” Lu-zi said, picking up the garden spade

they had dropped in their earlier panic. He spat on his
hands.

An-zi collapsed on the ground, pointing at the corpse with

a violently shaking finger, unable to speak.

“What’s wrong?” Lu-zi gripped the spade tighter, looking in

the direction An-zi was pointing.

“Ha-hand…” An-zi stuttered, clearly terrified.

Lu-zi suddenly caught a whiff of urine.

What on earth had An-zi seen to be scared to the point of
wetting himself?

The darkness made it hard to see clearly. Lu-zi took a step

forward to look at where the corpse’s hands were.

A slender hand extended from beneath the sheet,

clutching a garden spade!

Lu-zi felt a buzzing in his ears as hot blood rushed to his

head.

At this point, he could no longer deceive himself. They had

seen a ghost!

Lu-zi staggered backward and fell, landing squarely on

An-zi’s lap.

Lu-zi’s loss of composure was the final straw for An-zi’s

sanity. He violently shoved Lu-zi forward and leaped up,
running away at full speed.

To hell with it all! He’d rather be killed by the Young

Master than have his soul claimed by a female ghost.

There were ghosts!

Poor Lu-zi, caught off guard by An-zi’s push, fell face-first,
his chin landing right on the female corpse’s feet.

Lu-zi: “…”

An-zi, having run some distance, noticed the lack of

commotion behind him and couldn’t help but glance back.

The female ghost hadn’t moved.

An-zi involuntarily halted his steps.

“Come back quickly!” Lu-zi, having caught his breath,

called out, controlling his voice.

An-zi stood rooted to the spot, feeling a chilly breeze

between his legs.

“You son of a turtle, do you want to drag me down with

you?” Lu-zi cursed loudly. “Can’t you see the corpse isn’t
reacting? Hurry over here and dig the hole!”

“Brother Lu-zi, what if the female ghost is deliberately

luring me over to catch us both in one fell swoop?” An-zi’s
feet seemed glued to the ground, refusing to budge.
By this point, Lu-zi had thrown caution to the wind.

Who could be more wretched than him, with his chin

resting on the corpse’s feet, sitting in someone else’s
urine? The female ghost might as well strangle him and be
done with it!

Lu-zi mustered up the courage born of desperation, got

up, and began digging with the spade.

An-zi stood at a distance, watching nervously, ready to

bolt at any moment. After observing for a while and seeing
the corpse remain motionless, he gradually calmed down.

“Are you going to stand there until daybreak?” Lu-zi

shouted.

An-zi struggled internally for a moment before slowly

inching over.

With the two of them digging together, both being

experienced hands, the speed increased dramatically. It
didn’t take long to dig a hole.

With the female ghost’s earlier manifestation, neither

dared to look too closely. They anxiously pushed the
corpse into the hole, buried it, and hastily left this place of
horror.

Back in their room, the two servants collapsed onto their

beds without even washing their hands, gasping for
breath.

Most of the time, the aftermath is more terrifying than the

experience, fermenting over time into an inescapable
nightmare.

“Brother Lu-zi, should we tell the Young Master about

this?”

“Tell him what? That we saw a ghost? Would the Young

Master believe us? He’d think we had other intentions, and
we’d end up keeping the female ghost company.”

“No, we won’t say anything.”

The two servants reached an agreement, staring blankly

at the ceiling beams until dawn broke.

Meanwhile, Jiang Si weaved through the shadows of the

garden. As she was about to approach a tree, a dark
figure lunged at her.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 74: The Bodyguard
A dark shadow moved swiftly, landing on Jiang Si’s arm.
Jiang Si reached out to rub the shadow’s head, sighing,
“Er-niu, why are you here?”

This shadow was none other than Er-niu, whom she

hadn’t seen for some time.

Seeing Er-niu affectionately nuzzling her with its nose,

Jiang Si felt both exasperated and amused. It was
fortunate that she had detected the familiar scent early on.
Had it been any other girl walking in the garden in the
dead of night, suddenly pounced upon by a dark shadow,
she would likely have been frightened half to death.

“Woof woof,” Er-niu whined pleadingly.

“Come with me first,” Jiang Si stroked Er-niu’s head,

knowing they shouldn’t linger, and continued walking
forward.

Passing through the moon gate, the Heir’s quarters were

quiet, with only the red lanterns along the corridor still lit,
casting a soft orange glow.

The entire courtyard of the Heir’s quarters was bathed in

this gentle orange light, a stark contrast to the terrifying
and thrilling atmosphere of the garden, as if it were
another world entirely.

The woman and the dog quickly entered the eastern wing.

Thanks to the secret knock-out powder, Jiang Si wasn’t

worried about the two maids, and Jiang Qiao suddenly
woke up. After entering the room, she first washed her
hands and then led Er-niu to the unoccupied eastern side
room.

The eastern side room was slightly larger and more

spacious than the western one, but the layout was
essentially the same.

Jiang Si sat down without lighting a lamp, observing Er-niu

in the light filtering through the window.

“Woof,” Er-niu barked once.

The large dog seemed to understand the current situation

well, knowing to lower its voice even when barking
affectionately.

“Er-niu, how did you end up here?”

Er-niu stepped forward, suddenly raising its two front legs
to stand upright.

Jiang Si immediately noticed that besides the official tag

Er-niu already had around its neck, there was now a small
silk pouch.

Er-niu, no matter how clever, couldn’t have hung the

pouch there itself, which meant this pouch must be from…
Yu Qi.

Realizing this, Jiang Si hesitated for a moment.

“Woof woof.” Er-niu wagged its tail vigorously and pushed

its large muzzle forward, clearly urging Jiang Si to quickly
remove the pouch.

Jiang Si paused, then took off the pouch, inwardly amused

at the irony: how peculiar that tonight she had received
two pouches, one from a female corpse and one from Er-
niu, neither from a normal source.

Inside the pouch was a neatly folded square of paper with

a simple sentence written on it: “The Heir of Marquis
Changxing is not a good person. Leave as soon as
possible.”
The signature at the end was a single character: “Jin.”

As expected, this was indeed a message Yu Qi had sent

through Er-niu.

Jiang Si had originally resolved to distance herself from Yu

Jin, but seeing this sentence on the paper suddenly
piqued her curiosity.

How did Yu Qi know that the Heir of Marquis Changxing

wasn’t a good person? Could it be that he had witnessed
the Heir privately abducting commoner girls?

Thinking this, Jiang Si suddenly felt the urge to meet with

Yu Jin.

If Yu Qi had evidence of the Heir’s crimes, it would be

much easier for her to bring the Heir to justice.

She decided to meet with Yu Qi after leaving the Marquis

Changxing’s residence.

Having made up her mind, Jiang Si rubbed Er-niu’s thick

fur. “I’ve received the pouch. You can go back now.”

Er-niu looked at Jiang Si and sat down.

Jiang Si was taken aback, then smiled. “Don’t worry, your
master will know I’ve received it when he sees the pouch
is gone.”

Er-niu simply lay down on the ground, lazily sweeping its

tail.

“Do you need a reply?” Jiang Si asked in surprise.

Yu Qi’s message contained only a warning; her receiving it

was enough. There was no need for a reply.

The large dog glanced at Jiang Si again, then pressed its

face to the ground.

So it wasn’t asking for a reply.

Jiang Si studied Er-niu, trying to decipher its meaning.

Er-niu, seemingly dissatisfied that Jiang Si hadn’t guessed

quickly enough, swept its tail irritably, then placed its face
on its front paws and closed its eyes.

Jiang Si: “…”

“Er-niu, are you planning to stay?”

Er-niu barked twice.

“That won’t do. You’ll be discovered very quickly if you

stay here.” Jiang Si frowned, her dissatisfaction with Yu Qi
growing. It must have been that scoundrel’s instructions!

Er-niu leisurely walked to the window and leaped out in

one bound.

A moment later, the dog’s front paws appeared on the

outer windowsill, its furry head poking through.

The meaning was clear: it intended to make its home

under the window, and would only leave when Jiang Si
did.

“Er-niu, go back now,” Jiang Si said helplessly.

Er-niu looked at Jiang Si, then retreated into the foliage

outside the window, pressing its head to the ground and
covering its eyes with its front paws.

Not listening, not listening!

Jiang Si: “…”

She’d have to have a serious talk with Yu Qi about this
later!

Giving up on persuading Er-niu to leave, Jiang Si closed

the window and returned to the western side room.

On the bed, Jiang Qiao was still sound asleep. The knock-
out powder should keep her sleeping until dawn.

Jiang Si sat in a chair and took out the pouch she had
obtained from the female corpse.

The material of the pouch wasn’t particularly fine, but it

wasn’t cheap either. A girl wearing such a pouch likely
wasn’t from a poor background.

Jiang Si opened the pouch, and a small safety charm fell

out.

She picked up the charm and examined it closely.

The front of the charm reads “Peace and Good Fortune,”

while the back has three small characters: “Lingwu
Temple.”

Jiang Si had never heard of Lingwu Temple.

It was precisely because she hadn’t heard of it that she felt
a glimmer of hope.

Small temples without much fame often attracted

worshippers from nearby areas, which could narrow down
the search area.

Just like Miss Xiu, the tofu seller’s daughter, whose

disappearance would surely have caused a stir in her
family.

From the conversation between the two servants, it was

clear that at least seven or eight girls had been buried
under the peonies in the past two years. But as time
passed and beauty turned to bones, it became difficult to
find any clues from their remains. Therefore, Miss Xiu’s
daughter and the girl who died tonight were key to
exposing the Heir of Marquis Changxing.

She needed to quickly identify the girl who died tonight

and locate Miss Xiu’s residence.

This being the case, there was indeed no need to stay at

the Marquis Changxing’s residence any longer.
Previously, she hadn’t been sure when she could bring the
Heir to justice and feared that if Jiang Qiao insisted on
leaving, it might bring trouble upon them. But now, if she
had some time to contact the families of the two girls, she
could expose the Heir’s true nature. At that point, she
wouldn’t have to worry about Jiang Qiao being innocently
implicated.

Having planned all this, Jiang Si changed her clothes

again and lay down beside Jiang Qiao, soon falling into a
deep sleep.

The moon slipped behind the clouds. In a house with a

crooked jujube tree in front of its gate on Quezi Hutong,
Yu Jin sat at a stone table under a tree in the courtyard,
absently holding a white jade wine cup.

Why had she suddenly gone to the Marquis Changxing’s

residence?

He wondered if she would heed the warning and leave

that place soon after seeing the pouch Er-niu had
brought…

Thinking of the obvious wariness and distance in the

young woman’s eyes whenever she saw him, Yu Jin
sighed deeply.

She probably wouldn’t listen.

Fortunately, he had anticipated this and instructed Er-niu
to stay there.

Er-niu had one good quality: its thick skin was even more
impenetrable than his own.

At this thought, Yu Jin’s lips finally curved into a smile.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 75: The Marchioness
Jiang Qiao awoke to the gentle chirping of insects.

She sat up, rubbing her eyes, when suddenly her

expression froze.

After what happened last night, how could she have slept
so deeply?

“Fourth Sister—” Jiang Qiao hurriedly looked beside her,

and upon seeing Jiang Si still asleep, she let out a big sigh
of relief. After a moment’s thought, she reached out to
nudge Jiang Si. “Fourth Sister, wake up.”

Jiang Si slowly opened her eyes, her gaze fluid: “Third

Sister?”

“Looking at the sky, it’s not early. Let’s get up.”

Jiang Si rose, tidying her clothes as she spoke: “I only
dozed off in the early hours of the morning, that’s why I
woke up late.”

Hearing this, Jiang Qiao felt somewhat embarrassed: “I

don’t know why, but I slept like a log…”

“It’s not unusual. After a great shock, some people can’t

sleep, while others, due to mental exhaustion, sleep even
more deeply.”

Is that so?

Jiang Qiao felt she wasn’t usually such a carefree person.

Even now, thinking of last night’s events, a shadow still
loomed in her heart, refusing to dissipate. “Fourth Sister,
are we going to continue staying here?”

“No, we’re leaving today.”

“But last night, didn’t you say—”

“Times change.” Jiang Si leaned close to Jiang Qiao,

whispering in her ear, “I’ve found a way to deal with that
beast. We don’t need to stay in the Marquis’s mansion
anymore.”
Jiang Qiao’s eyes lit up. She wanted to say something, but
catching sight of the doorway from the corner of her eye,
she swallowed her words. Instead, she squeezed Jiang
Si’s hand firmly: “That’s good. When we see Jiang Qian
later, let’s bid her farewell!”

Jiang Si immediately noticed the subtle change in Jiang

Qiao’s attitude towards Jiang Qian.

Previously, although Jiang Qiao wasn’t close to Jiang

Qian, she wouldn’t have addressed her so directly by
name as she did now.

“Don’t worry, leave this to me. If she dares to stop us, I’ll
throw a tantrum.” Jiang Qiao winked at Jiang Si.

Jiang Si smiled gently: “Alright.”

As the sisters were whispering, the embroidered peony

curtain was suddenly lifted, and two maids in green attire
hurriedly entered, carrying soft towels and washbasins.
They bowed in unison: “Young ladies, please forgive us for
being late.”

After a moment, Jiang Si spoke calmly: “It’s fine. Please

help us freshen up.”
After spending some time grooming, one of the maids
said: “Young ladies, please follow me to have breakfast
with the Young Mistress.”

Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao exchanged a glance before

following the maid hand in hand to Jiang Qian’s quarters.

The Fifth Young Lady Jiang Li and Sixth Young Lady

Jiang Pei had already arrived earlier.

As soon as she saw the two enter side by side, Jiang Pei
said: “Second and Third Sisters are so late, I was about to
go look for you.”

After being harshly rebuked by Jiang Si yesterday, Jiang

Pei had become more restrained.

Jiang Qiao curved her lips into a smile: “Second Sister

arranged such comfortable lodgings for us, we didn’t want
to get up.”

Jiang Pei couldn’t help but pursed her lips.

Third Sister was thick-skinned, actually making an

oversleeping sound so righteous.
Jiang Qian, however, chuckled lightly: “I’m glad you sisters
found your stay comfortable. It’s rare for you to visit, so
you must stay with Second Sister for a few more days this
time.”

“Of course, Second Sister rarely comes home, so now that

we’re here, it’s the perfect opportunity to keep her
company,” Jiang Pei said ingratiatingly.

Jiang Qian’s eyes didn’t even glance toward Jiang Pei,

seemingly casually looking toward Jiang Si instead.

Jiang Qiao was about to speak when Jiang Si lightly

touched her hand.

Jiang Qiao pressed her lips together, temporarily

abandoning her intention to speak.

“Second Sister, shouldn’t we pay our respects to the

Marchioness today?” Jiang Si asked.

Hearing Jiang Si say this, Jiang Qiao chimed in: “Yes,

yesterday we had just arrived so it was understandable,
but if we don’t show our faces this morning, the
Marchioness might think the young ladies from the Earl’s
mansion don’t know proper etiquette.”
Seeing both Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao speak thus, Jiang
Qian smiled: “I was waiting for you all to arrive so we could
go together.”

“Oh my, aren’t we late then?” Jiang Qiao frowned.

Fifth Young Lady Jiang Li glanced at Jiang Qian, looking

somewhat uneasy.

“We’re not late. The Marchioness is lenient, and it’s

always been the custom in the Marquis’s mansion to go
after each household has finished breakfast.”

“That’s good.” Jiang Qiao appeared to breathe a sigh of

relief.

Jiang Qian surveyed the four of them and smiled: “Let’s

eat.”

Soon, maids filed in and set out breakfast.

Silver thread buns, shrimp porridge, xiaolongbao, drunken

silverfish, vinegar-dressed wood ear mushrooms, and
other delicacies filled the table. Though the portions of
each dish were small, they were exquisitely prepared.
The sisters ate breakfast in silence, after which Jiang Qian
led Jiang Si and the others to the Marchioness Chang-
xing’s quarters.

By this time, the Marchioness Chang-xing had just finished

her breakfast. Upon hearing the maid’s report, she invited
them in.

Jiang Qian respectfully paid her respects: “Yesterday, the

sisters had just arrived, so we didn’t dare disturb Mother-
in-law’s peace. This morning, I’ve brought them along as I
come to pay my respects.”

A gentle voice replied: “I’ve always said there’s no need

for such formalities, just be at ease.”

Jiang Pei couldn’t help but steal a glance.

The Marchioness Chang-xing was a beautiful woman in

her forties. At her age, living in luxury, many noble ladies
would have become plump, but the Marchioness still
maintained a slender, oval face and a svelte figure like a
young girl. Her gentle demeanor gave an impression of
fragility.

Jiang Pei lowered her eyes, feeling quite envious.

The Marchioness Chang-xing looked to be of a good
temperament. With such a mother-in-law, and the Heir of
Marquis Chang-xing as a husband, Second Sister truly
had good fortune.

Recalling Jiang Qian’s dismissive attitude towards her,

Jiang Pei’s envy turned to jealousy. She thought to
herself: It’s just a matter of being born into the right family.
If she had been born to the principal wife, with her status
as a young lady from the Earl’s mansion and her father
being a fourth-rank official in the capital, she might have
married even better than Jiang Qian.

The Marchioness Chang-xing indeed appeared to be a

very kind woman. Her gaze swept over Jiang Si and her
sisters as she smiled: “Indeed, you’re all like blossoming
flowers, a joy to behold.”

Next, the Marchioness Chang-xing gently inquired about

the names and ages of the four sisters. Finally, her gaze
settled on Jiang Si: “I’ve long heard that the Fourth Young
Lady Jiang is a rare beauty, but now that I see her, I
realize the rumors don’t do her justice.”

Jiang Si smiled graciously: “The Marchioness flatters me.

One’s appearance is a gift from one’s parents and has
nothing to do with personal effort. I find it hardly worth
mentioning.”

The Marchioness Chang-xing was taken aback, then

smiled: “I didn’t expect the Fourth Young Lady Jiang to be
so insightful at such a young age. I truly like you from the
bottom of my heart.”

Jiang Qian raised her eyebrows slightly, then quickly said

with a smile: “Mother-in-law, if you don’t mind the girls
disturbing your peace, why not let them keep you
company for a few days?”

The Marchioness Chang-xing smiled: “That would be

wonderful. I wonder if your children are comfortable with
your accommodations?”

“Second Sister cares for us the most, and you, Madam,

are so kind. I feel even more at ease here than at home,”
Jiang Pei said with a covered smile.

Jiang Li, who had always been reluctant to stand out,

remained obediently silent in such situations.

Jiang Qiao, however, suddenly said: “It’s our good fortune

that you like us, Madam, but I’m afraid we can’t stay at
your esteemed mansion.”
With these words, the room suddenly fell silent.

The Marchioness Chang-xing, who had been focusing

most of her attention on Jiang Si, looked at Jiang Qiao in
surprise, while Jiang Qian’s eyes held a warning.

Jiang Qiao seemed to feel no pressure at all as she lightly

pulled up her sleeve.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 76: Escape
Publicly rolling up one’s sleeves was somewhat
unladylike, even if only women were present.

Jiang Qiao, however, didn’t mind and candidly showed her

exposed arm to everyone.

The young lady’s wrist was as white as snow, but it was

covered with more than ten red spots.

The smile on Madam Marquis Changxing’s face froze.

“I should inform Madam that my skin is naturally sensitive,
and I easily develop a rash when suddenly changing
environments. I was worried about this when I went to
sleep last night, and sure enough, this is how it turned out
this morning,” Jiang Qiao furrowed her brows in distress.
“So although the Marquis’s residence is lovely, I can’t stay
any longer. Otherwise, I’ll soon be itching all over and
unable to sleep.”

Madam Marquis Changxing recovered and still spoke

gently, “If that’s the case, we certainly shouldn’t force you
to stay.”

She glanced at Jiang Qian.

Jiang Qian understood and immediately said, “Third

Sister, why didn’t you say so earlier? In a while, Second
Sister will arrange a carriage to send you back.”

“Thank you, Second Sister,” Jiang Qiao smiled, linking her

arm with Jiang Si’s. “I’ll go back with Fourth Sister in a bit.”

Jiang Qian’s expression stiffened. After a moment, she

said, “You just arrived yesterday. The third Sister has to
leave early because she’s uncomfortable, but the Fourth
Sister has only stayed for a day. I was hoping she could
stay a while longer to keep me company.”
“Don’t you have Fifth Sister and Sixth Sister to keep you
company?” Jiang Qiao smiled, holding Jiang Si’s arm even
tighter, showing no intention of letting go. “I’ve only been
here for a day before leaving. Those who know will
understand it’s because of my skin rash, but those who
don’t might think I’ve upset Second Sister. So, let Fourth
Sister accompany me back. That way, there won’t be any
gossip.”

Jiang Qiao spoke quickly, but her words made sense.

Jiang Qian couldn’t argue and glanced at Jiang Pei.

Jiang Pei almost instantly understood Jiang Qian’s

intention.

The second Sister wanted her to accompany the Third

Sister back.

Why her? Just because she was a concubine’s daughter?

Jiang Si clearly didn’t show a good face to Second Sister,
yet Second Sister still treated her well. Why was that?

Lost in these thoughts, Jiang Pei didn’t speak up in time.

Jiang Qian suppressed her dissatisfaction and had to say,
“In that case, why don’t we have Sixth Sister accompany
you back?”

Jiang Qiao waved her hand with a smile, “Let’s not trouble
two people for one task. I’ve already arranged it with
Fourth Sister, and she’s agreed. Besides, Sixth Sister likes
the Marquis’s residence so much, how could we make her
leave to accompany me?”

“Fourth Sister rarely visits, while Sixth Sister can come

anytime in the future—” Jiang Qian wished she could stuff
a cloth in Jiang Qiao’s mouth.

Third Uncle was born of a concubine, and although Jiang

Qiao was outspoken, she had never paid much attention
to her. She didn’t expect her to ruin her plans now!

Jiang Qian knew without thinking that once Jiang Si left

like this, Cao Xingyu would be furious.

Jiang Qiao rudely interrupted Jiang Qian’s words, “Second

Sister, I don’t like the sound of that. Do you think that
because we’re cousins, and Sixth Sister is your full sister,
that’s why you’re treating me and Fourth Sister like
outsiders?”
People are often less courteous to their own family while
being polite to those they’re less close to. Jiang Qiao’s
words left Jiang Qian speechless.

Jiang Qiao pressed on, curtsying to Madam Marquis

Changxing, “Madam, Fourth Sister and I will bid you
farewell now. We’ll come to visit you again when we have
the chance.”

“Very well, have a safe journey. Jiang Shi, go make the

arrangements quickly,” Madam Marquis Changxing said
gently, then instructed her maid.

Shortly after, the maid who had left returned, carrying two
gift boxes.

Madam Marquis Changxing smiled, “These aren’t anything

valuable. One box for each of you sisters, take them home
to enjoy.”

Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao curtsied together, “Thank you for

your generous gifts, Madam.”

Jiang Qian, forcing a smile, led the group out. Madam

Marquis Changxing stared at the still-swaying pearl curtain
and sighed softly.
As soon as they left Madam Marquis Changxing’s
quarters, Jiang Qian’s face darkened slightly, “Third Sister,
you shouldn’t have said so much in front of the Madam.”

Jiang Qiao blinked, looking innocent, “I didn’t say much,

just told the Madam I was leaving. Ah, is Second Sister
upset that I’m taking Fourth Sister with me?”

Jiang Qian pursed her lips, looking at Jiang Qiao.

Jiang Qiao chuckled, “Second Sister, you’re so strange.

Isn’t it the same whether Fourth Sister or Sixth Sister
accompanies me back? They’re both sisters. Don’t tell me
you favor Fourth Sister more because she’s prettier?”

Jiang Qian was at a loss for words, and Jiang Pei, who
was caught in the crossfire, was equally furious.

She hadn’t done anything, why call her ugly?

Meeting Jiang Qiao’s smiling eyes, Jiang Qian felt a chill in

her heart.

Had Jiang Qiao discovered something last night?

It’s never pleasant to know that your husband covets your

younger sister. To avoid seeing and thinking about it, she
hadn’t paid attention to the commotion in the east wing
last night and had even instructed her maids and servants
to retire early.

But even without paying attention, based on her

understanding of Cao Xingyu, she could guess that the
pervert wouldn’t have missed the opportunity to explore a
young lady’s chamber at night.

Jiang Qian stared at Jiang Qiao, her mind racing with

countless thoughts.

“Second Sister?”

Jiang Qian came back to her senses and forced a smile,

“Third Sister is joking. You’re all my sisters, and I treat you
all the same.”

She couldn’t make her intention to keep Jiang Si for a

short stay too obvious. All her younger sisters were grown
up now and becoming perceptive.

“That’s good. It seems I overthought things. I apologize to

the Second Sister. By the way, when will the carriage be
ready?”
Jiang Qian, with a heavy heart, saw Jiang Si and Jiang
Qiao off to the carriage. Seeing Jiang Pei’s light-hearted
expression and Jiang Li’s demure manner, she felt
frustrated.

Those who should have left didn’t, and those who should
have stayed didn’t. How vexing!

“Where are you going?” Cao Xingyu, the Heir of Marquis

Changxing, who was just returning from outside, asked
gently upon seeing the carriage stopped at the gate.

Before Jiang Qian could answer, the carriage curtain was

suddenly lifted, revealing Jiang Qiao’s smiling, pretty face.
“Little sister is feeling unwell and is returning to the Earl’s
residence.”

Seeing it was Jiang Qiao, Cao Xingyu’s lips twitched

almost imperceptibly, “Then Third Sister should see a
doctor promptly upon returning to the manor. Let your
Second Sister know your condition afterward, so we can
put our minds at ease.”

“Don’t worry, Second Brother-in-law. I’ll be fine as soon as

I return to the Earl’s residence,” Jiang Qiao smiled,
inwardly cursing him as a beast in human clothing.
Cao Xingyu’s smile faltered slightly.

Why did those words sound so odd?

“Second Brother-in-law, go back with Second Sister. We’ll

see you another time,” Jiang Qiao lowered the curtain.

The coachman raised his whip, and the carriage slowly

started moving.

Cao Xingyu withdrew his gaze, maintaining his gentle and

refined demeanor in public. He stepped forward and took
Jiang Qian’s hand, asking, “What’s wrong with Third
Sister?”

“Nothing serious,” Jiang Qian said vaguely.

“Uh.” Cao Xingyu glanced at Jiang Li and Jiang Pei beside

Jiang Qian, his eyes darkening, “Where’s Fourth Sister?”

Under his gaze, Jiang Qian forced a smile and said,

“Fourth Sister accompanied Third Sister back.”

Cao Xingyu suddenly turned his head to look at the

departing carriage.
The carriage bearing the Marquis Changxing’s emblem
had just turned the corner and disappeared.

Cao Xingyu turned back, staring at Jiang Qian for a good

while before revealing a gentle smile, “Let’s go inside.”

Jiang Qian trembled all over and slowly nodded.

In the carriage, Jiang Qiao let out a long sigh of relief,

“We’ve finally left that filthy place.”

Jiang Si, however, suddenly held her forehead.

Oh no, she had left Er-niu behind.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 77: The Wedding Procession
Noticing Jiang Si’s unusual expression, Jiang Qiao quickly
asked, “What’s wrong?”

Jiang Si regained her composure. “Nothing.”

Given Er’niu’s cleverness, if he could secretly infiltrate

Marquis Changxing’s manor, he should have no trouble
leaving.

“Third Sister, what’s with those red rashes on your arm?”

She didn’t believe in such coincidences.

Jiang Qiao raised her arm, letting her sleeve fall to her
elbow, and said with a grin, “Oh, this? We had shrimp
porridge this morning, and I ate quite a bit. I always get
these when I eat shrimp.”

Jiang Si suddenly remembered that the bowl of shrimp

porridge placed before Jiang Qiao had been emptied, and
she’d even asked for seconds.

Jiang Si grabbed Jiang Qiao’s hand. “Third Sister, thank

you.”

She’d heard that some people would break out in rashes

after eating certain foods, experiencing severe itching and
even fainting in serious cases.

Though she’d resolved to leave Marquis Changxing’s

manor, even if it meant burning bridges, she hadn’t
expected Jiang Qiao to go to such lengths.

“What’s there to thank?” Jiang Qiao lowered her sleeve.

“It’s not serious—it’ll fade by tomorrow. After what
happened last night, staying there even a moment longer
felt unbearable. Leaving early was the right choice.”

She then casually opened the gift box from Marchioness

Changxing, finding hairpins, rings, and other ornaments
that young ladies typically enjoyed. She sighed, “The
Marchioness is a good person, but unfortunately—”

Jiang Si laughed coldly inside.

Was the Marchioness a good person?

In her previous life, after fleeing to the Southern Borders

and becoming the Seventh Prince’s consort, she’d
returned to the capital and secretly investigated behind
Prince Yu’s back. Only then did she learn that the Heir of
Marquis Changxing had died long ago.

His death had been gruesome—dismembered below the

waist and left naked in the bustling marketplace.
The deaths of both the Heir and Divine Lady Liu became
famous unsolved cases, with neither the culprit nor the
motive ever discovered.

Jiang Si could have waited patiently for two years until

some nameless hero dealt with that beast of an Heir.

But she wasn’t willing to wait, nor could she bear it.

She couldn’t bear to let his horrific deeds be buried with

his death, leaving people to sigh with misplaced pity. Even
more unbearable was the thought of how many innocent
girls would suffer at his hands in those two years.

As for the Marchioness—

Thinking of her, Jiang Si couldn’t decide whether to feel

angry or disgusted. Perhaps she could only sigh that birds
of a feather flock together.

After years of childlessness, following the Heir’s violent

death, the manor announced Jiang Qian’s pregnancy, and
by the next year, she had delivered a premature
“posthumous child.”
It wasn’t unusual for a new widow to deliver early due to
excessive grief, so people didn’t suspect anything.
However, through her quiet investigation of Second
Uncle’s family, she discovered a shocking secret: Jiang
Qian’s child wasn’t the Heir’s, but the Marquis’s!

The truth was even more despicable than imagined. Jiang

Qian bearing the Marquis’s child wasn’t due to any illicit
affair—rather, the Marquis and his wife, unwilling to let
their son’s lineage end and not wanting a concubine’s son
to inherit their vast estate, had used their daughter-in-law
to produce a “legitimate grandson.”

And all of this—the seemingly fragile Marchioness hadn’t

been kept in the dark.

She was a participant.

Perhaps for that woman, this was preferable to watching

the Marquis have a son with a concubine who would
inherit everything from her son.

These thoughts made Jiang Si nauseous.

She could say without hesitation that everyone in the

Marquis’s manor, down to the stone lions at the gate, was
tainted.
“You can’t judge a book by its cover. Has Third Sister
been bought over by a box of trinkets?” Jiang Si teased.

Jiang Qiao started, then quickly understood: “Fourth Sister

thinks the Marchioness is suspicious too?”

Jiang Si replied coolly, “I believe a person’s character is

inevitably tied to their environment. With a son like that,
could his mother truly be such a saint?”

Jiang Qiao considered this and nodded: “You have a

point, but however disgusting they are, it’s no longer our
concern. We’ll just stay far away from them from now on.”

Jiang Si certainly didn’t want Jiang Qiao too deeply

involved, so she smiled in agreement.

“Fourth Sister, how do you plan to deal with that beast?”

Jiang Si answered vaguely: “I haven’t thought it through. I

was scared at the time and said that just to leave the
manor quickly. Let me think about it properly when we get
back.”

Jiang Qiao gave her a sidelong glance: “Stop treating me

like a child.”
If anyone had been scared, she’d shown far more fear
than Fourth Sister, who had remained composed
throughout, as if completely unaware of last night’s events.

Seeing through her deflection, Jiang Si conceded: “I can’t

discuss that method right now. If it succeeds, I’ll tell Third
Sister everything. If it fails—”

Noticing Jiang Qiao’s skeptical look, Jiang Si smiled, “If it

fails, I’ll seek Third Sister’s help in finding another way.”

“That’s better.” Jiang Qiao tactfully dropped the subject.

Having reached an unspoken understanding, they moved

on to casual conversation.

Suddenly, the carriage stopped.

“What’s happening?” Jiang Qiao called out.

The driver responded from outside: “There’s a wedding

procession, miss. Too many spectators have blocked the
road ahead.”

“A wedding?” The excitement-loving Jiang Qiao

immediately lifted the window curtain.
A breeze swept through the window, instantly clearing the
stuffiness from the carriage.

Outside, the crowd was dense and lively.

Soon, the sound of firecrackers approached from afar,

accompanied by children’s excited screams.

From the scale of things, it must be a wedding for some

noble family’s young master.

Seeing no way forward and unable to turn around easily,

the driver guided the carriage to the roadside to wait for
the procession and crowd to pass.

Jiang Qiao rested her chin on her hand by the window,

asking curiously, “I wonder whose wedding this is?”

Jiang Si cast a casual glance outside.

The wedding procession gradually approached, with

festive suona music making the atmosphere even more
jubilant.
At the front of the procession sat the groom on a horse
decorated with red silk. As they drew closer, both sisters
heard the admiring murmurs from the crowd.

“My, I never expected the Third Young Master of Duke

An’s manor to be so handsome!”

“What’s surprising about that? How else could he make an

unmarried maiden commit suicide with him…”

“That’s wrong thinking. When a common girl secretly

pledges herself to a duke’s son, she might commit suicide
with him even if he had a face full of pockmarks.”

The crowd’s tones ranged from excited to teasing as they

discussed the recent scandal of Duke An’s Third Young
Master and a commoner girl’s suicide pact.

This was prime gossip material—it was said to have even

reached the Emperor’s ears.

Sitting in their carriage, the sisters could feel the burning

curiosity of the capital’s citizens nearly scorching through
to their compartment.
Jiang Qiao’s expression changed, and she glanced at
Jiang Si, relaxing only when she saw her expressionless
face and averted gaze.

Now at ease, the Third Miss stuck her head out further,
craning her neck to look.

“Third Sister, what’s so interesting to see?” Jiang Si asked

helplessly.

“Don’t disturb me—I want to see what this blind fool looks
like.”

Snatching?
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 78: Bride Snatching?
The man Jiang Qiao had described as “having eyes but
failing to see” was adorned with flowers and dressed in
red, sitting upright on horseback with a smile on his lips.
His tall, slender figure was somewhat pale, but by the
aesthetic standards of the Great Zhou Dynasty, he was
considered a rare beauty among men.

Jiang Qiao tilted her head and stared for a good while,
unable to find any flaw in his appearance. She could only
say resentfully, “I knew he’d be this type of useless pretty
boy.”

Jiang Si was amused: “Third Sister, you’re mistaken.

Many people are now praising the touching love story
between Third Young Master Ji and the commoner girl. I
heard someone even wrote a popular novel based on their
story.”

Jiang Qiao’s expression turned strange. After holding back

for a while, she said, “I’ve read it. Whoever wrote that
novel must be out of their mind. Fourth Sister, you
shouldn’t pay any attention to it.”

She thought to herself, it must have been written by some

poor scholar who randomly made things up. They even
portrayed their Earl of Dongping’s family as the evil force
preventing true lovers from being together, and even wrote
that despite breaking off the engagement, Fourth Sister
still couldn’t forget that good-for-nothing Third Young
Master of the Duke An’s family.

Although the characters in the novel had different names,

anyone could easily figure out who they were based on.

It was infuriating.
Come to think of it, it was because Fourth Sister had
gotten caught up in such an annoying situation that
whenever Jiang Qiao saw her now, she felt somewhat
sorry for her. She couldn’t bring herself to bicker with her
as they used to.

“I’ve read that novel. It’s written quite intricately,” Jiang Si

said. At this moment, thinking of Ji Chongyi, she felt no
ripples in her heart.

She had never had feelings for that man, even in her
previous life. Before marriage, her longing for him had only
stemmed from vanity.

Now that she had completely let them be together, she

only hoped they would remain true to each other so that
hundreds or thousands of years later, they might truly
leave behind a beautiful story for future generations.

“Fourth Sister, you don’t mind?” Jiang Qiao’s gaze

followed the approaching procession.

“Why should I mind about someone who has nothing to do

with me?” Seeing Jiang Qiao watching intently, and with
nothing else to do while their carriage waited by the
roadside, Jiang Si decided to join her in watching.
Jiang Qiao wasn’t one to be overly sentimental. Seeing
Jiang Si’s attitude, she felt relieved and started discussing
with her: “Fourth Sister, do you think all men who look like
the Third Young Master of Duke An’s family are
inconsistent in their words and actions?”

“Why do you say that?”

Jiang Qiao sneered, “Isn’t the Heir of Marquis Changxing

also of this type?”

Jiang Si took a careful look at Ji Chongyi, who was now

close by in his red wedding attire, and gave a fair
assessment: “The Heir of Marquis Changxing leans more
towards the effeminate side, while Third Young Master Ji’s
eyes appear much more upright.”

Jiang Qiao looked at Jiang Si in surprise, muttering,

“Fourth Sister, you are—”

For a moment, Jiang Qiao didn’t know what to say.

Perhaps by coincidence, Ji Chongyi, sitting on his tall

horse, happened to glance in their direction.

The streets were crowded with spectators on both sides,

and many carriages were waiting by the roadside due to
the blocked path. Yet, Ji Chongyi’s casual glance
happened to fall on this particular green-curtained
carriage.

A jade-like hand lifted the carriage curtain, revealing a

young lady inside who was looking out the window with an
indifferent gaze, her beauty unparalleled.

Ji Chongyi, in his red wedding attire, was momentarily

stunned as his horse carried him forward.

The girl he had just seen was truly beautiful, perhaps the
most beautiful he had ever seen in his life.

As a normal man, Ji Chongyi couldn’t help but have this

thought flash through his mind. Of course, beyond this
brief admiration, there was nothing more. His heart was
quickly filled again with the joy of soon being married to
his beloved.

This was just like most people’s thoughts: no matter how

beautiful the scenery by the roadside, it doesn’t belong to
you. Once seen, it’s just seen.

But at this moment, an unexpected event occurred.

A black and yellow whirlwind swept through the crowd.
Before anyone could react, it had bitten… the tall horse’s
behind.

Even though the horse chosen for the wedding procession

was naturally of a gentle temperament, no horse could
endure such a bite on its backside. The stallion
immediately reared up on its hind legs.

Poor Ji Chongyi, who had been feeling proud and content,

was caught off guard by this sudden change. He flew off
like a bright shooting star.

Screams immediately erupted from all around.

Fortunately, there were many people in the wedding

procession and even more spectators. The airborne Ji
Chongyi was caught by the onlookers.

Jiang Qiao was dumbfounded: “Fourth Sister, someone’s

trying to snatch the bride!”

Jiang Si was equally stunned. After a moment, she said,

“It’s not bride snatching, it should be… causing trouble…”

What was Erniu doing?

As if sensing Jiang Si’s thoughts about his motives, the big
dog looked towards the carriage, proudly shaking its fur.

People finally saw clearly that the culprit behind this

incident was a large dog.

“Quick, kill this mad dog!” shouted a guard from the

wedding procession.

Someone who knew the customs called out, “We can’t kill
it! It’s not auspicious to see blood on a joyous day. Just
chase the beast away!”

The horse, still in pain and kicking its legs, thought to

itself, “… Isn’t the blood on my backside still blood?”

Several guards immediately moved to surround the big

dog.

Jiang Qiao, nervous, tugged at Jiang Si’s sleeve: “This is

bad, the dog is in trouble!”

Jiang Si: “…”

What’s with Third Sister’s concerned tone for Erniu?

“Let… let it go…” Ji Chongyi stood up, his face dark.

Falling off a horse because of a dog during his wedding
procession was too embarrassing. In this situation, leaving
quickly would be best. Did they need to have a big fight
with this dog?

Unfortunately, while the groom had thoughts of letting the

matter rest, the big dog had other ideas.

The dog leaped through a gap in the encirclement,

snatched the groom’s ceremonial hat in its mouth, and
took off running.

The spectators were so shocked by the dog’s audacity

that no one thought to stop it. After a while, looking at the
groom’s bald head, they burst into laughter.

Ji Chongyi’s face had turned as black as the bottom of a

pot. Along with his anger, he felt a sense of bewilderment.

These days, all he heard were his father’s scolding and his
mother’s sighs, along with the dissatisfied looks from his
brothers and sisters, even though they didn’t say anything
directly.
The home was still his home, but in his eyes, it had
gradually become unfamiliar. The pervasive oppression
brought by that unfamiliarity had almost driven him mad.

He had been constantly comforting himself, thinking that if

he could just hold on until the wedding, everything would
be fine. In the future, if he studied hard and achieved
something, who would still criticize him for marrying a
commoner?

But he never imagined that the joyous event he had been

looking forward to would be marred because of a dog.

He was probably the most embarrassed groom ever!

“Third Young Master, please mount the horse again,” the

steward brought another horse, advising in a low voice.

Ji Chongyi nodded reluctantly and silently mounted the

horse. As the procession became lively again, with
wedding money and sweets being thrown about, the
festive sound of the suona in his ears had lost its spirit.

Jiang Qiao, peering out the window, sighed after

recovering from her shock: “Whose dog is causing such
trouble?”
Well done!

Jiang Si, however, didn’t respond. Her gaze moved past

the crowd and fell on one person, her heart filled with
confusion.

Why was Yu Qi standing in the crowd watching as if this

had nothing to do with him?

In her previous life, he had attended Ji Chongyi’s wedding.

HomeThe Brocaded Tale of the Girl SiChapter 79:
Questioning from the Palace
The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 79: Questioning from the Palace
Yu-Jin was born to Noble Consort Xian, who was Ji
Chong-Yi’s paternal aunt. By all rights and custom, Yu-Jin
should have been present at the wedding ceremony at
Duke An’s mansion today for Ji Chong-Yi’s marriage.

In her previous life, this had indeed been the case.

Therefore, when circumstances deviated from her past

life, Jiang-Si was extremely surprised. Since her
reincarnation, she had deliberately changed many things
but matters she hadn’t interfered with should have
followed the same trajectory as before.

What had caused Seventh Prince Yu-Jin to change?

Jiang-Si’s thoughts were in turmoil, unable to make sense
of it.

From across the crowd, Yu-Jin met Jiang-Si’s gaze and

smiled gently at her.

Reflexively, Jiang-Si immediately lowered the carriage

curtain.

The thin, elegantly bamboo-patterned curtain swayed

gently, much like the stirring thoughts in a young lady’s
heart.

Seeing Jiang-Si’s reaction, Yu-Jin paused momentarily,

his eyes betraying a hint of disappointment before he
smiled resignedly and quietly turned away into the sea of
people.

Jiang-Si bit her lip and, as if possessed, lifted the curtain

again.

The crowd outside remained thick with people, but his

figure had vanished.

She lowered the curtain and leaned silently against the

carriage wall.
“Fourth Sister, were you frightened by that large dog
earlier?” Jiang-Qiao noticed Jiang-Si’s unusual demeanor
and placed a hand on her shoulder. After just one visit to
Marquis Chang-Xing’s mansion, the sisters had naturally
grown closer.

“No,” Jiang-Si smiled.

Er-Niu was quite the attention-seeking dog. Teasing the

groom was nothing – she should be thankful it hadn’t
dragged a corpse from the Marquis’s garden to parade
through the streets.

Thinking of this, Jiang-Si suddenly felt sympathy for Yu-

Jin.

As the master, he must have had to clean up quite a few

messes.

Meanwhile, the very person Jiang-Si was pitying had

returned to his residence in Quezi Hutong. Facing the
empty courtyard, Yu-Jin called out, “Er-Niu, come out!”

Soon after, Er-Niu came trotting out, tail wagging and

placed the groom’s ceremonial hat at Yu-Jin’s feet.

Yu-Jin stared silently at the plume on the hat.

Perhaps he had raised a spirit in the canine form…

The hidden guard Long-Dan appeared from nowhere to

tattle: “Master, Er-Niu went too far! How could it cause
such chaos at a young master’s wedding?”

This impudent dog enjoyed more favor than him in the

master’s eyes – he’d been waiting for this chance to point
out its misdeeds!

“Chaos?” Yu-Jin raised an eyebrow, then patted Er-Niu’s

head. “Not at all. I think Er-Niu acted exactly as I would
have wished.”

Long-Dan blinked, asking earnestly, “Master, surely you’re

joking?”

Yu-Jin gave Long-Dan a sideways glance.

Long-Dan scratched his head.

It made no sense – the groom was Master’s cousin, so

why would he approve of Er-Niu’s mischief?

Could it be that young master had somehow offended

Master?
Long-Dan’s thoughts raced, but he couldn’t figure out how
the Third Young Master of Duke An’s household could
have possibly offended his master.

Master had only recently returned from the south, and

even if there wasn’t much familial affection between
cousins, this reaction seemed odd.

Er-Niu barked triumphantly at Long-Dan.

Long-Dan was vexed.

His heart ached – Master and Er-Niu must share some

secret he wasn’t privy to!

As Long-Dan wallowed in self-pity, the doorkeeper came

to report: “Someone has arrived from the palace.”

“Show them in,” Yu-Jin said calmly.

Er-Niu immediately grabbed the ceremonial hat and

disappeared.

Soon, the doorkeeper led in a beardless, pale-faced

eunuch.
“Greetings, Your Highness.”

“What brings the Public Servant here?” Yu-Jin remained

seated on the stone bench, not bothering to rise.

The eunuch dared not show any displeasure and smiled,

“Her Majesty sent this humble servant to inquire why Your
Highness did not attend the celebration at Duke An’s
mansion with the Prince today.”

The Prince the eunuch referred to was Yu-Jin’s elder

brother, the current Emperor’s fourth son, who had been
granted the title of Prince Qi.

Speaking of which, Seventh Prince Yu-Jin’s position was

rather awkward.

On the day of his birth, the newly enthroned Emperor

Jingming suddenly fell gravely ill. When the imperial
physicians were at a loss, the Empress Dowager had no
choice but to post-imperial notices seeking medical help. A
Daoist priest who responded claimed that Emperor
Jingming’s illness was connected to the newborn Seventh
Prince – their Eight Characters conflicted, and they could
not peacefully coexist. For the Emperor to recover, the
Seventh Prince would need to live outside the palace until
he turned eighteen.
The Empress Dowager was skeptical but, seeing the
Emperor’s condition unchanged, decided to try moving the
Seventh Prince out of the palace. Sure enough, Emperor
Jingming gradually recovered.

From then on, Yu-Jin never returned to the palace.

According to Great Zhou’s customs, princes were

supposed to be granted their principalities at sixteen, but
when Yu-Jin turned sixteen, he was in the south with no
one to arrange the matter, so it was quietly overlooked.

Now that Yu-Jin had returned to the capital, he still

couldn’t see Emperor Jingming before turning eighteen.
The Minister of the Imperial Clan was uncertain of the
Emperor’s attitude toward this prince and naturally
wouldn’t raise the matter of granting him a principality
unbidden.

This created an awkward situation where even the Eighth

Prince, younger than Yu-Jin, had been granted the title of
Prince Xiang, while the Seventh Prince remained just that
– the Seventh Prince…

Yu-Jin showed no concern about this whatsoever.

Being an insignificant prince made it easier to obtain what
his heart truly desired.

For instance, if the Crown Prince wished to marry a lady

who had broken off a previous engagement, it would be
nearly impossible.

At this thought, Yu-Jin’s lips curved into a slight smile,

appearing somewhat foolish.

The visiting eunuch was bewildered.

Though the Seventh Prince’s smile was more beautiful

than any palace beauty’s, what exactly was His Highness
smiling about?

Could it be that years of unfair treatment had warped his

personality?

As if confirming the eunuch’s thoughts, Yu-Jin emerged

from his reverie and said flatly, “Well, I just didn’t feel like
going.”

The eunuch: “…”

After a moment, Yu-Jin asked, “Does the Public Servant

have any other business?”
The eunuch nearly burst into tears.

With His Highness giving such a direct reason, what was

he supposed to do?

When Noble Consort Xian asked upon his return to the

palace, how could he simply say the Seventh Prince didn’t
feel like going? Just imagining her reaction made him
shudder.

“Is… is that all? Duke An’s mansion is your maternal

family…”

Yu-Jin gave the eunuch a cold look, seemingly annoyed at

his persistence: “We’re not close.”

Internally, Yu-Jin laughed coldly.

Not only was he unfamiliar with his maternal family, but

even his blood relatives in the palace were no different
from strangers to him.

He could somewhat understand that his father, as

Emperor, had to heed the Daoist priest’s warning about
their conflicting fates, but in all these years since he’d
been sent from the palace, his mother hadn’t tried to see
him even once, nor sent him so much as a piece of
clothing or a pair of shoes.

In his younger years, Yu-Jin had felt hurt and resentful, but
now he felt only indifference.

They truly weren’t close at all.

“Would the Public Servant like to stay for a meal?”

“This humble servant thanks Your Highness, but Her

Majesty awaits my report.” The eunuch emphasized the
word “report,” giving Yu-Jin a chance to change his
answer.

Yu-Jin raised an eyebrow slightly: “See the guest out.”

A magnificent, imposing large dog came trotting over,

wagging its tail.

The eunuch fled at top speed.

Yu-Jin looked at Er-Niu and sighed: “I meant for Long-Dan

to see him out.”

Er-Niu looked up at the sky.

What? It couldn’t understand a single word.

The Brocaded Tale of the Girl Si
Chapter 80: Going to See Yu Qi
Jiang Si and Jiang Qiao finally returned to the Earl of
Dongping’s mansion. Naturally, they had to go to Cixin
Hall to explain why they had come back so soon.

When Third Madam Guo heard that her daughter had

developed a rash, she was heartbroken. She pulled Jiang
Qiao along, quietly scolding her as they walked.

Jiang Si stood on the bluestone path, watching the mother

and daughter gradually move away. A faint sense of envy
welled up in her heart.

She had no mother and didn’t know what it felt like to be

scolded by one.

Just then, Jiang Qiao suddenly turned back and waved at

Jiang Si.

Jiang Si was stunned for a moment, then smiled, pressing

her lips together.

Envy aside, she didn’t have time for sentimentality.

Jiang Si didn’t even return to Begonia Residence, instead
going directly to the study to find Jiang Ancheng.

Jiang Ancheng and Third Master Jiang managed the

Earl’s estate together. Usually, Third Master Jiang spent
more time running around outside, while Jiang Ancheng
stayed at the mansion most of the time.

At this moment, he was dozing off in the study. Seeing

Jiang Si arrive, he immediately perked up.

“Am I disturbing Father?”

“Not at all, I was just resting my eyes after reading.”

Jiang Si glanced at the imprint on the left side of Jiang

Ancheng’s face and said seriously, “Father, please be
mindful of resting while reading. Be careful not to strain
your eyes.”

Jiang Ancheng coughed lightly, covering his mouth with

his fist. “I’ll be sure to balance work and rest. Wasn’t Si’er
at Marquis Changxing’s mansion? Why are you back
today?”

“Third Sister was feeling unwell, so I accompanied her

back.”
Jiang Ancheng asked a bit more about Jiang Qiao’s
condition. Hearing that it wasn’t serious, he felt relieved
and thought happily to himself: My daughter is so
considerate, coming to see her old man as soon as she
returns. Unlike that good-for-nothing Jiang Zhan, who
spends all day idling about outside.

“Father, I wanted to ask you about something.”

She had found a safety charm with “Lingwu Temple”

written on it in the pouch from the female corpse.
However, she had never heard of Lingwu Temple. At
present, A-Fei hadn’t returned, and she had no one else at
her disposal. After much consideration, she decided to ask
her father directly.

“What does Si’er want to ask?”

“Father, have you heard of Lingwu Temple?”

“Lingwu Temple?” Jiang Ancheng frowned in thought, then

shook his head after a moment. “I’ve never been one for
such things, so I’m not very clear on this. Si’er, are you
asking because you want to go pray?”
Jiang Si was a bit disappointed, but it was within her
expectations.

If Father knew about it, that would have been lucky.

“On the way back, I overheard a young woman by the

roadside saying that the incense at Lingwu Temple was
very efficacious. If one went to pray there, their wishes
would come true. I was just curious and wanted to ask
about it.”

Jiang Ancheng smiled, “Your Third Uncle travels to many

places. When he returns, I’ll ask him. He might know. If
not, I’ll send someone to inquire about it.”

As long as his daughter was happy, it didn’t matter if it was

efficacious or not.

“If Father sends someone to inquire, please don’t let too

many people know about it.”

Jiang Ancheng was stunned for a moment, then laughed

heartily, “Don’t worry, Si’er. I’ll send someone to inquire
discreetly.”

His daughter was so shy. Could it be that she wanted to

pray for a good marriage?
Seeing Jiang Ancheng laugh like this, Jiang Si knew he
had misunderstood, but she didn’t explain.

She wanted to expose the true face of the Heir of Marquis

Changxing while also trying her best to avoid involving the
Earl’s family.

After all, she still didn’t have anyone she could use, and as
an unmarried girl, it wasn’t convenient for her to act freely.

“Then I won’t disturb Father’s reading any further.” Jiang

Si curtsied and left the study, returning to Begonia
Residence.

As soon as A-Man and A-Qiao saw Jiang Si return, they

joyfully rushed to greet her.

“This servant was worried that Young Miss wouldn’t be

comfortable staying alone at the Marquis’s mansion,” A-
Man said, anxiously looking Jiang Si over. “Young Miss
has even lost weight.”

A-Qiao’s mouth twitched.

It had only been one day!

“Alright, bring me a cup of iced honey water.”

Having been stuck in traffic from Marquis Changxing’s

mansion to the Earl’s mansion, Jiang Si didn’t want to go
inside for the moment. She simply sat down on the swing
under the tree.

A-Qiao hurried inside to bring the honey water. Jiang Si

took a small sip.

“Fourth Sister, I heard you were back.” Jiang Zhan came

running in excitedly.

The weather was hot, and Jiang Zhan’s face was slightly
flushed from running, his forehead glistening with sweat.
Yet, because he was handsome, he didn’t look slovenly or
greasy at all. Instead, he exuded a vibrant, youthful
energy.

This energy seemed capable of dispelling the gloom in

one’s heart.

Jiang Si couldn’t help but smile, “Second Brother, did you

just return from outside? A-Qiao, go fetch a cup of honey
water for Second Young Master.”
Jiang Zhan strode over, gently pushed the swing, and then
sat down on a nearby stone bench. His dark eyes were full
of excitement, “I have some good news to tell you, Sister.”

“Oh? What good news?”

“That Ji fellow’s high horse was bitten by Erniu during the

wedding procession!”

He had always disliked Erniu, but never imagined that

Erniu would be on the same side as him!

No, the same side as a dog!

That’s not right either…

Jiang Zhan was a bit confused, so he decided not to think

about it anymore. He’d just give Erniu two jin of cooked
beef later.

“Sister, aren’t you happy?” Seeing that Jiang Si didn’t

show much joy, Jiang Zhan asked in surprise.

Jiang Si thought for a moment, then suddenly smiled.

To be honest, she did feel a bit of secret pleasure.

Although she acknowledged that Ji Chongyi not liking her
wasn’t wrong, this marriage wasn’t something the Earl of
Dongping’s family had eagerly sought.

Initially, it was Duke An’s family who had actively sought to

form a marriage alliance with the Earl of Dongping’s
family. When Father was still hesitating, it was Duke An
who patted his chest and guaranteed that marrying his
daughter over wouldn’t be a loss.

In her previous life, after Ji Chongyi’s sweetheart died, he

married her in despair but completely ignored her.

She could feel that Ji Chongyi couldn’t blame his parents,

so he transferred the resentment for his sweetheart’s
death onto her. As if without this marriage, he could have
married his sweetheart in a grand ceremony.

Or perhaps, after losing his sweetheart, hating her was the

only thing that gave him the will to live.

But that kind of suffocating cold treatment could drive any

normal woman mad.

Even with all her later experiences, she still couldn’t help
but think: if he was truly in despair, why not simply
become a monk? Duke An had three sons; he didn’t need
Ji Chongyi to continue the family line.

Or he could have protested to the death. Would Duke An

and his wife force him to marry against his will?

By marrying her, Third Young Master Ji had fulfilled his

duty to his parents and maintained the reputation of Duke
An’s family. Only she had become the sacrifice to their
love story.

Seeing Jiang Si’s genuine smile, Jiang Zhan smiled along

with her. He quickly finished the iced honey water A-Qiao
brought him, then got up and went behind her to push the
swing.

“Fourth Sister.”

“Hmm?”

“That Ji fellow isn’t much. You’ll meet someone better in

the future.” Jiang Zhan’s curiosity was piqued as he said
this. “What kind of man does Fourth Sister prefer? I have
many friends, I can keep an eye out for you.”

Jiang Si smiled sweetly, “If he could be as good as

Second Brother, I’d be satisfied.”
As for her brother’s friends, she’d rather not.

Jiang Zhan was stunned for a moment, then his face

suddenly turned as red as a cloth. He hurriedly made an
excuse and fled in embarrassment.

Jiang Si hadn’t expected Jiang Zhan to be so thin-skinned.

She smiled, got up from the swing, changed into a fresh
set of clothes, and left with A-Man.

Since Yu Qi had sent her a message through Erniu, she

might as well go and get some clear answers.
