II. Very Short Answer Type Ques [1 Mark]

1. Which countries are known as rich countries on the basis of per capita income?
Ans: Countries with per capita income of USD 12056 per annum and above in 2017 are known
as rich countries

2. Mohit is 28 years of age, has 65 kg of body weight and is 1.4 meters tall.Calculate his BMI.
Find out whether he is under nourished or over weight. Why?
Ans: His BMI is 33.16
He is overweight because his BMI is more than 25.

3.‘Sustainable Development is a crucial step for the development of a country’. Explain with any
one suitable example.
Ans: Sustainable development is crucial for development of a country as it:
-Promotes use of renewable resources like solar energy, tidal energy, etc
-Puts a check on over usage of resources
-Promotes protection and conservation of resources for future generation

4. Suppose there are four families in a country with per capita income of $15000. The income of
three families is $10000, $20000 and $12000. What is the income of the fourth family?
Ans: The income of the fourth family is $18,000.The income of the fourth family is $18,000.

5. Study the data given below and answer the Question that follow. Some comparative data on
Punjab, Kerala and Bihar:
(a)Which state appears the most developed?
(b)Which state has the highest infant mortality rate?
(c)Why does this state have the highest infant mortality rate? Give two reasons.

State Infant Mortality Rate Literacy Rate(%) Net Attendance

per 1,000 (2003) (2001) Ratio (1995-96)
2
Punjab 49 70 81
Kerala 11 91 91
Bihar 60 47 41

Ans: (a)Kerala appears the most developed.

(b)Bihar has the highest infant mortality rate.
(c)Bihar has the highest infant mortality rate because of the following reasons.
 Lack of health facilities
 Lack of food security

6. The following table shows the proportion of undernourished adults in India. It is based on a
survey of various states for the year 2001. Look at the table and answer the following questions.
State Male (%) Female (%)
Kerala 22 19
Karnataka 36 38
Madhya Pradesh 43 42
All Sates 37 46
(a)Compare the nutritional level of people in Kerala and Madhya Pradesh.
(b) Can you guess why around 40 per cent of people in the country are undernourished even
though it is argued that there is enough food in the country? Describe in your own words.

(a) The nutritional levels of people in Kerala and Madhya Pradesh are different. While 22% and
19% men and women respectively are undernourished in Kerala, the respective percentages of
male and female undernourshment in Madhya Pradesh are 43% and 42%. This implies that
Kerala has more well nourished people than Madhya Pradesh. Also, the undernourishment
average for Madhya Pradesh is greater than that for the entire country, while that for Kerala is
lower than the national average.

(b) Despite the presence of adequate food in the country, around 40% of Indians are
undernourished. This is because of the erratic and unsystematic distribution of food. Some states
in the country ensure smooth running of ration shops and other forms of Public Distribution
System (PDS). This ensures that no one has to go without food, especially the poor for whom
ration shops provide foodgrains at subsidised rates. However, on account of excess exports and
inconsistent food supply to the masses, nearly 40% of the Indian people are undernourished.

IV.Answer the following question in 150 words (To be written in notepad)

1.What is the main criterion used by the World Bank in classifying different countries? What
are the limitations of this criterion, if any?
Ans.(i) For classifying different countries the World Bank uses the income criterion. Countries
with higher per capita income are considered more developed than countries with lower per
capita income simply because more income would ensure all the things that human beings need
to maintain a decent standard of living.
(ii)The World Bank in its World Development Report, 2017 has considered countries with a per
capita income of US dollar 12056 per annum and above as rich while those with a per capita
income of US dollar 955 per annum or less as low income countries.
(iii)The income criterion has certain limitations. Along with income, there are many other factors
like literacy rate, net attendance ratio, life expectancy, infant mortality rate that play an equally
important role in comparing the development of countries.

2.Why do we use averages? Are there any limitations to their use? Illustrate with your own
example related to development.
Ans.(i)For Comparison between countries, total income is not a useful criterion since the size of
the population is not the same and comparing total income will not tell us what would be a
person's average income.
(ii) Hence, average income is considered for comparing the development of two countries. It is
calculated by dividing the total income of a country by its total population. Average income is
also called per capita income.
(iii) Although average income is a useful criterion for comparison, it hides disparities. This is
clear from the comparison of the following two countries A and B.
COMPARISON OF TWO COUNTRIES
Country Monthly incomes of citizens (in Rupees)
I II III IV V AVERAGE
Country A 9500 10500 9800 10000 10200 10000
Country B 500 500 500 500 48000 10000

4
(iv) In both the countries A and B, the average income is the same that is 10000. But in country A
there is not much difference between the income of the citizen while in country B there is a vast
difference in the income of the citizens.
(v) Thus we can conclude that though average income is useful for comparison, it does not tell us
how this income is distributed among the people.

3.In what respects is the criterion used by the UNDP for measuring development different from
the one used by the World Bank?
Ans.( i)The World bank compares different countries only on the basis of the per capita income
criterion.
(ii) UNDP in its Human Development Report compares different countries not only on the basis
of the income factor but certain other factors like :
(a)Educational level of the people (literacy rate ,net attendance ratio )
(b) Health status of the people (average life expectancy,
infant mortality rate).

4.Find out the present sources of energy used by people in India. What could be the possibilities
fifty years from now?
Ans.Coal and petroleum products, electricity are some of the present sources of energy used by
people of India. Petroleum products and coal are non- renewable sources of energy. These natural
resources would be exhausted after a few years if they are not used judiciously .Possibilities for
energy sources after 50 years can be nuclear energy from radio -active elements, solar energy,
wind energy etc.Wind ,sunlight is non exhaustive resources which may be utilized without
interruption for years and years.

5.Why is the issue of sustainability important for development?

Ans. (i)Sustainability is the capacity to use the resources judiciously without harming the
environment and not compromising the needs of the future generation.
(ii) Every generation wants to get the maximum benefits of the available resources but such a
thing would be disastrous as a resources would be depleted and our future generations would be
deprived of them.
(iii) It is therefore very important to use the resources in a judicious manner so that a certain part
is left for future use.
(iv)We should protect our flora and fauna from human exploitation.
(v) Minerals and fossil fuels are exhaustible and therefore must be used very carefully. Recycling
and Reusing and substituting exhaustible resources with inexhaustible resources like solar energy,
wind energy tidal energy is the need of the hour.
