comparative adjectives
comparative adjectives
Comparative adjectives are special words that help us compare two things. They tell us which
thing has more or less of a certain quality. For example, we can say "This apple is bigger than that
apple" or "This book is more interesting than that book."
To make a comparative adjective, we usually add "-er" to the end of short words, like "big"
becomes "bigger." For longer words, we use the word "more" before the adjective, like
"interesting" becomes "more interesting." Some words have special rules, like "good" becomes
"better" and "bad" becomes "worse."
When we use a comparative adjective, we always need to compare two things. We use the word
"than" to show which thing we are comparing. For example, we could say "This cake is tastier than
that cake." We can also use comparative adjectives to compare things indirectly, without
mentioning the other thing. For example, we could say "This city is less crowded than other cities."
Comparative adjectives are helpful because they let us describe things in a more specific way.
They help us understand the differences between things and make our writing and speaking more
interesting.
