Is TBI effective?

The use of the interactive whiteboard in schools

raises various questions in the field of education and
in society as well. For example, one may question
the quality of teachers' use of information and
communication technologies in the classroom; as to
the possibility offered by the use of BIT to the child
to be cognitively active in understanding the subjects
seen in class; as for the possible improvement of the
child's skills with ICT when teaching with a BIT. All
these questions are necessary in the school
environment in order to be made aware of the
various issues with regard to TBI, but also in order to
make adequate use of this new technology.

First of all, the use of the BIT in the classroom is appropriate when teachers do not rely
exclusively on this new tool. Indeed, plan B must be provided, because like any technology,
the TBI can have technical problems. In addition, one should not neglect the other more
traditional means of learning such as manipulation, activities in dyad, in subgroup or
individual. Teachers can also work with other ICTs such as interactive tablets

Pierre Lachance and Nathalie Frigo, RÉCIT resource people, propose the 3-O approach
(TablO-BurO-CervO) to talk about the integration of ICT in learning. This concept interrelates
three places known to the class and exploited by teachers: the blackboard (or the front of the
class), the desk (student's work environment) and the brain (where learning takes place).
The use of BITs by the teacher should thus allow students to work in these three spaces
(TablO-BurO-CervO). The teacher is ultimately required to vary the learning contexts11.

Very useful educational games can be put in contact with the IWB from an iPhone or an
iPad. Here are some interesting suggestions for working with this tool thanks to the
applications of these devices: Toqua Store, Toca Doctoral, Colors and shapes, Virtual
Human Body, etc. If the teacher wants to explain notions of French, several TBI activities
provide linguistic, lexical and phonetic support. We can also work the other disciplines of the
Quebec school training program with iPad applications. For example, mathematical
concepts, the social universe, the sciences, etc. In the TBI training and resource sharing site
for FLE we find games for the class of different levels.
Second, TBI can be beneficial for some children. It goes without saying that students who
are usually less attentive in class may feel more joined by the technology represented by this
new work tool. Indeed, thanks to the TBI, teachers can manipulate and have students
manipulate directly on the board. A recent

Study1

12 mentions that whiteboards have positive effects on students' academic motivation and,
consequently, on their academic results. In fact, this study highlights the major impacts of the
painting's success for boys. In addition, whiteboards allow students to better understand
technologies. The two studies consulted12,13, which note a correlation between the positive
effects on school results and the IWB, mention that teachers must have a good experience
with this tool in order to have positive results in the short and medium term.

Note :

BITs would have positive effects on the learning and motivation of students, especially boys.
Cognitive mediation

Teaching with technologies allows cognitive mediation with students. The teacher becomes a
resource person for the students in all of the activities. The United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization positions itself in this same type of vision for education in
the 21st century. The organization mentions with regard to the teaching profession that "this
one will be called more and more to establish a new relation with the learner, to pass from
the role of soloist to that of accompanist, becoming from now on either the one who
dispenses knowledge as the one who helps his students to find, organize and manage
knowledge.

Development

Loti Mersch 18 is a professional development grid adapted to the specific use of BIT in the
teaching of mathematics. This model is based on seven levels of use prioritized according to
their contribution to the educational plan. This model allows the teacher to evaluate his use
of the BIT.

An example made on a whiteboard type tool like Realtime board. Once the process has been
exposed and tested in a group, the students can apply it individually. The next step would be
to analyze the content of the news to see how it is treated. On this subject, see the example
of activity on media processing and our file on Internet research and media monitoring.
