The tale of the Clever Mouse Deer

and the Crocodile

In a lush forest, there lived a clever mouse deer named Sang Kancil. He was
famous throughout the forest for his intelligence in outwitting animals much
larger than himself. One day, as Sang Kancil was looking for food by the
riverbank, he saw the other side of the river was full of fresh and delicious
fruits. However, to reach them, he had to cross a deep, fast-flowing river.
Sang Kancil thought hard about how to cross the river without drowning.
Suddenly, he had a brilliant idea. He knew that the river was inhabited by
always-hungry crocodiles. So, Sang Kancil shouted, "Hey, crocodiles! Come
here, I have good news for you!"
Hearing Sang Kancil's shout, the crocodiles immediately swam closer. One
of the biggest and oldest crocodiles asked, "What's the matter, Kancil? Why
are you calling us?"
Sang Kancil smiled slyly and said, "I have been sent by the King of the Forest
to count the number of crocodiles in this river. The King wants to give you all
a great reward. But I need to know how many of you there are to ensure the
reward is enough."
The greedy and foolish crocodiles were delighted to hear the word "reward."
Without suspicion, they lined up from one bank of the river to the other, as
Sang Kancil requested. "Now, jump on our backs and count us one by one,"
said the old crocodile.
Sang Kancil then jumped onto the back of the first crocodile, shouting,
"One!" He continued jumping onto the next crocodile, "Two! Three! Four!"
Until finally, he reached the other side of the river and said, "Thank you,
crocodiles. Now I know your number."
Quickly, Sang Kancil leaped onto the land and ran away, leaving the
bewildered crocodiles behind. They realized they had been tricked, but it was
too late. Sang Kancil was already on the other side of the river, enjoying the
fresh and delicious fruits.
From that day on, the crocodiles learned not to trust the clever Sang Kancil
easily. However, Sang Kancil always found new ways to overcome challenges
in the forest with his extraordinary intelligence. And thus, the tale of Sang
Kancil and the Crocodiles became a fable passed down through generations
in the forest, teaching that cleverness and wit can defeat strength and size.
