Answer all the questions. Each question is of 10 marks.

1. A. Given below are some words in pairs. Make sentences with each of the pairs of
words in order to bring out the two different meanings.
a) gait, gate
b) gorilla, guerrilla
c) grate, great
d) hail, hale
e) hair, hare

B. Follow the instruction in the given sentences and write the correct answer
i) “Where do you live?” asked the stranger. (Change the report)
ii) Rama said to Arjun, “Go away.” Change the report from Direct to Indirect speech)
iii) The teacher said to the students, “Too many cooks spoil the broth.” (Change the
sentence from direct to indirect speech)
iv)The mother said to the child that may God bless him. (Change the report from Indirect
to Direct speech)
v) The gardener forbade the boys to walk on the grass. (Change the report from Indirect
to Direct speech)
vi) We believe in your innocence. (Use noun form of innocence)
vii) He is so tired that he cannot work anymore. (Remove so...that)
viii) It is better to starve than beg.(Change the Degree of Comparison)
ix) Being obstinate, he was punished. (Change into Compond)
x) In spite of being nervous, he does well. (Change into Complex)

2. A. Enumerate the different categories of non-verbal communication and state their


importance in communication process with suitable examples.

missing opportunities. Do you agree with the statement? Substantiate with suitable
examples.

3. A. Write Essay on the following.

4. A. Write the minutes of a meeting of Students Union from the following agenda:
i) Regarding the minutes of last meeting

B. Write a letter report to the Head of your institution regarding the introduction of a
course on computer literacy for all students.

5. A. As the production Manager of the company write a sales letter to inform the prospective
customers about the new line of home appliances launched by your company.

B. Write a letter to the HR department of an IT firm enquiring about any vacancy in the
position of system Engineer.

6. A. Tata Consultancy Services, Kolkata – 700054 proposes to run a two-week training


programme in Professional Communication for their engineers. As the Director of
training, you have been asked to examine the suitability of running this programme at
the Indian Institute of Management, Joka, Kolkata during the ensuing vacation and to
submit a report to the Personal Manager of the company. Write the report in the letter
format.

B. As the Purchase Officer of a Company, what type of letter (complaint/
acknowledgement) letter would you draft to Uniflex LD, New Delhi, pointing out the
damage which was discovered after checking the consignment containing Compact
Discuss sent to you by the supplier. Invent the necessary details. Write in details the
letter of your choice.

7. A. Imagine yourself to be the instructor of a course in which 75 students have registered.


Draft an email to be sent to all these students asking them to select a topic of their choice
and prepare for a professional presentation of 10 minutes duration.

B. Recently you read in the editorial column about honor-killing practiced in the
conservative Indian society. Write a letter to an editor drawing attention to the stigma
in society.

8. A. As the Sales manager of Livwel Corporation, write an email to confirm the telephonic
conversation you had with the manager of Rohit Lal and Sons for the supply of 500
voltage stabilizers, giving important technical details regarding its installation and
operation and the terms and condition of sale.

B. Frame a NOTICE as the president of Bright Future Inc.to the company’s employees to
announce a policy banning tobacco use on company grounds.

the necessary details.

10. A. What is the importance of a good CV. Difference between A CV and A Resume.

B. Draft a CV for the position of Senior Manager at Lucas & Sons, 1/7 Kolkata, Globus
Work space, West Bengal. Put in the necessary details.
