Expanded Noun Phrases
A note to parents: An expanded noun phrase gives more detail or information about a noun in
a simple noun phrase. This is usually done by adding adjectives to describe the noun in the noun
phrase, for example:
She walked through the dark, mysterious forest.
In the example above, the expanded noun phrase is ‘the dark, mysterious forest’, the words ‘dark’
and ‘mysterious’ have been used to expand the noun phrase. They make writing more interesting
as they help the reader to build an image in their mind.

Read the following sentences. Underline or circle the expanded noun phrase in each sentence.

1. The brightly-coloured parrot flew through the canopy.

2. After his lunch, Harold ate a sweet, delicious chocolate brownie.

3. Under the waves, the stripy fish swam quickly through the reef.

4. In a forest clearing, a dark, mysterious jaguar sauntered by the water.

5. “Pass me the blue shoes please,” Mum asked Sophia.

6. As John sat at the bus stop, he saw three large, black cars go past.

7. “These strawberry yoghurts are out of date!” complained the customer in the shop.

8. “Whose is this writing pencil?” asked the teacher as she held it in the air.

9. When he reached the top, the climber stared at the vast, breath-taking view.

10. Happy and elated, the winning team held their trophy in the air.
Expanded Noun Phrases 2
A note to parents: Another way to create an expanded noun phrase is to add a prepositional
phrase to add further information about the noun and to enable the writing to be more efficient.
For example, where it takes two sentences to say:
The man sat on the beach. He was wearing a red hat.
We can write this more succinctly by expanding the noun phrase with:
The man with the red hat sat on the bench.
For further information on prepositional phrases, please see this.

Read the following sentences. Underline or circle the expanded noun phrase in each sentence
that has been expanded with a prepositional phrase.

1. Under the waves, the fish with the jagged fins swam swiftly through the reef.

2. The cat under the bush was drenched and shivering.

3. From the cave, a dragon with deadly claws came crashing out.

4. At the stables, Aisha chose to ride the horse with a black mane.

5. Charlie reached for the chocolates on the top shelf.

6. The wizard in the purple robe waved his magic wand and they all disappeared.

7. Jason had always known that the house adjacent to the park was occupied by witches.

8. “Please pass me the keys from the top drawer,” Dad said to Brian.

Pandora’s Box
A long time ago in Ancient Greece, there lived two brothers named Epimetheus and Prometheus.
They were good gods with very kind hearts. Zeus, the most powerful of all gods, had hidden
fire from mankind, never allowing them to make tools or cook their food. Prometheus, with his
kind heart, thought this was unfair.
Prometheus was clever and knew that on the Isle of Lemnos lived Hephaestos, who was a
blacksmith. Zeus allowed Hephaestos to use fire to make things for the gods. Prometheus
travelled to Lemnos and stole the fire from Hephaestos and gave it to man. He also taught
humans civilizing arts such as writing, medicine, mathematics and science.
Zeus was furious at Prometheus and, as punishment, chained him to the side of a cliff for many
years. Zeus decided that the humans also needed to be punished for their lack of respect. Zeus
was creative when it came to revenge and therefore came up with a very cunning plan.
With the help of Hephaestos, he sculpted a woman out of clay. The goddess Athena breathed life
into the clay and the woman came to life. Aphrodite made her beautiful and Hermes taught her
how to be both charming and deceitful. Zeus called her Pandora and sent her to Epimetheus,
as he knew that he was lonely.
Epimetheus went to visit his brother and Prometheus warned him not to accept any gifts from
the gods. However, Epimetheus was so charmed by Pandora that he thought she could never
cause any harm. Zeus was pleased that his plan was working and, as a wedding gift, gave
Pandora a small box.
When Pandora was given the box, she instantly became curious. The box was locked, but had a
small key and a note attached to it that said ‘DO NOT OPEN!’ Pandora had promised that she
would not open the box, but all she could think about was its contents. Why would someone
send her a box and not allow her to open it? Pandora could no longer stand the torture of not
knowing what was in the beautiful box.
When she knew that Epimetheus was out of sight, Pandora placed the box on the floor and
took the small gold key. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she unlocked the box.
She opened her eyes and pulled the box open, expecting to see fine silk dresses and jewellery.
But there was not one gold bracelet or fine silk dress in sight! Instead, Zeus had packed terrible
evils into the box and out poured sickness, death, poverty and sadness in the form of a horrible
black mass.
Pandora slammed the lid shut, but it was too late; the evils had already escaped into the
world. Epimetheus heard her weeping and ran into the room to console her. Pandora could
still hear a tiny voice inside the box, pleading to be released. Epimetheus and Pandora thought
that nothing could be worse than the horrors that had already been released, so together they
opened the box. Out fluttered hope in the form of a beautiful gold dragonfly, healing some the
sickness and sorrow.
Even though Pandora had released suffering and sadness upon the world, she had also released
hope, and this made all the difference in the world.

Snowy Town

Jonny took his dog, Scruffy, out for a walk on a cold day in December. He
bundled up in his heavy winter coat and put on his thick wool cap and
heavy mittens before he said goodbye to his mom. Outside the front door,
the whole world was like a winter wonderland: there were icicles hanging
from tree branches and snow banks that rose all the way up to Jonny’s
knees. Scruffy was excited to be outside and scampered around, digging in
the snow and jumping into drifts. Jonny was also glad to be out in the cold
air. The blizzard that left all this snow had raged for two days, and he
hadn’t been allowed to go outside, even just to catch some air!

They walked through Jonny’s neighborhood, passing people who looked

glad to be outside, too. A few blocks down, Jonny saw his friend Marcus
building a snowman with his big sister, Marie.

“Hi, Marcus!” Jonny called out. He walked over to the snowman.

“Hey, Jonny. You want to help?” Marcus was patting the bottom part of the
snowman with his glove, while Marie was rolling together the second
section of the snowman, packing the snow together to make sure it stayed
in a round shape.

Jonny walked over and wrapped Scruffy’s leash around Marcus’s mailbox.
Together, Jonny, Marcus, and Marie built an amazing snowman. They
fashioned a long pointy nose out of many small twigs pulled together in a
tent shape, and eyes out of bruised green apples Marie found in the house.
They made the snowman’s arms out of two longer sticks, setting them up to
make it look like he was waving. Sometimes Jonny would look over and
Scruffy would be digging again, but he mostly sat patiently, watching
Jonny, Marcus, and Marie work.

When they were all done, Marcus and Marie’s mom came outside to see
their work. “This is an amazing snowman!” she said. “Does anyone want
hot chocolate?”

All three kids and Scruffy ran into the house and warmed up. After about an
hour, Jonny decided it was probably time to go home—the sun was
beginning to set, and it was starting to get very cold. As he was saying
goodbye to Marcus, Marie, and their mom, Scruffy ran out into the yard,
ignoring all of their calls to stop and come back.

All of a sudden, Scruffy jumped up and gave the snowman a big bear hug.

“Oh no!” Jonny yelled, and ran out to the snowman, which was now a pile
of snow and sticks on the ground. Marie and Marcus ran out behind him. All
three looked down at the remains of the snowman and then at Scruffy, who
was staring up at them, panting and smiling.

“Oh well,” Marcus said. “We can build another one tomorrow.”

Jonny apologized for Scruffy and clipped the leash back onto his collar.
Marcus was right. Tomorrow was a new day and could mean another
snowman. Jonny walked Scruffy home as the sun set. Maybe tomorrow he
would build a snow-dog.

Forgetting the Words

Andy is frightened when he sees the pirates. They have eye patches and
big swords, and they do not look happy to see him. But the pirates are not
the reason why Andy feels scared. The pirates are supposed to be there,
because Andy is starring in the school play. He had been thrilled when Mrs.
Roberts, his teacher, chose him to star in Treasure Island. The play is
based on a famous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, and it is one of
Andy’s favorites. He has been looking forward to this for weeks. But now
that he’s up on stage, with his family and friends watching from the
audience, something terrible has happened. Andy does not remember what
he’s supposed to say.

It’s the big scene at the end of the play, when Andy fights the pirates. When
they were practicing the play, this was his favorite scene, because he got to
run and jump and fight with his sword. Andy loves pretending to be a pirate.
He and his imagined the jungle gym is a ship. They run back and forth
across it, having sword fights and yelling about buried treasure. Sometimes
they jump off the side and pretend to be eaten by sharks. During recess,
they pretend to fight with swords, and hold them like pirates.

But before the fight can happen, there’s something Andy has to say to Long
John Silver, the leader of the pirates. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t
remember his line.

Is he supposed to say, “This is the end for you, Long John Silver!” ? Is he
supposed to say, “Get your hands off my treasure!” ? Maybe he’s supposed
to say, “En garde!” That’s what people say in pirate movies. But Andy
doesn’t want to just make up the words. If he says something wrong, he
might confuse the other actors. He might get in trouble.

Andy’s mother was very proud of him when he got picked to star in the
play. He can’t see her in the audience, but he knows she’s out there
somewhere, waiting for his big scene. Andy is worried about letting her
down. The other actors are waiting for him to say something. They look
angry. He isn’t sure if their anger is pretend. He waves his sword at them,
but they don’t do anything. Nothing can happen until he says his line. Andy
is beginning to sweat.

From somewhere out in the audience, he hears a voice yell, “Get ‘em,
Andy!” It’s his mom! Suddenly, Andy knows just what he has to do. He still
can’t remember his line, but it doesn’t matter. Andy raises his sword above
his head and roars like a lion. He runs at the pirates, and they begin to
fight.

Adventure at Sandy Cove

“Hurry up,” shouted Joe as he climbed over the rocks.

Carefully, Rahul followed. The two boys stopped at a rock pool
and began to search for shells. “Hey, what’s this?” shouted
Joe to Rahul. In the rock pool was a small, black box wrapped
in plastic. The boys tugged it loose. What was inside? Joe
pressed the silver catch and the lid popped open. The box was
full of sparkling jewels!

At that moment, a scruffy old man shouted at the boys. His

wolf-like dog barked dangerously. Joe snapped the lid down,
picked up the box and the two boys began to scramble over
the rocks. They slipped and struggled towards the cliffs.
“Quick! Let’s hide in here,” said Joe, rushing into a cave. It
was dark and damp inside and they could hear water dripping.
They felt their way further in and crouched behind a rock.
Rahul’s heart pounded like a bass guitar. All at once, the
scruffy man appeared at the cave mouth. He shone a torch
around. The light cast shadows on the cave wall. The children
ducked down and kept as still as stone, but the dog could
sense them. It padded closer and closer, growling dangerously.
Rahul gripped Joe’s arm. They could see its white teeth, smell
its damp hair and feel its hot meaty breath.

Suddenly, there was a distant shout. “Here, dog!” hissed the

man, roughly grabbing its collar. “Those boys have got away -
quick, after them!” Joe and Rahul held their breath until they
could hear the sound of the man and his dog stumbling back
across the rocks. They waited for a long while before creeping
out. Even though the beach was empty, the boys ran home as
fast as they could.

At first, Mum didn’t believe them. It was only when Joe

opened the box that she decided to call the police. When the
police arrived, they told Mum that the big house up the road
had been burgled only the night before. They had spent all day
searching for a trace of the jewels. Their only clue had been
the footprints of a large dog. Joe shut his eyes. He could

The Giant’s Accidents

The giant stood up and hit his head;

he gasped and fell back on his bed.
The bed broke with a mighty crack –
he dropped right through and bumped his
back.
He leapt up with a mighty roar
and knocked his elbow on the door.
He stiffened with the sudden pain
and then he hit his head again.
He staggered round – the room was reeling –
he slipped and crashed straight through the
ceiling.
To try and stop his sudden fall
he stretched his arm to grasp the wall.
The noise was heard all over town:
the whole house swayed and tumbled down.
He tunneled up from underneath
with bits of floorboards in his teeth.

and gave his nose a nasty clout.
“It can’t get worse”, he gave a grin,
then slipped on a banana skin.

Read and write an ending for the story.

The Pet

Peter loved pets. He had done so ever since he was a child. He was
always kind to animals. He put out milk for stray cats. He hung up seeds
for birds. He went to the park each day to feed the ducks. But his pride
and joy was his dog Rex. It was a German Shepherd.

Rex was good at tricks. He did what Peter told him to do. He could
shake paws and roll over and play dead. Peter even trained Rex to go to
the shop each day to fetch him his newspaper. Rex sat outside the shop
and barked until Mr Patel came out with the paper. Mr Patel gave it to Rex
who trotted home with it in his mouth. It was always a bit soggy and wet
but Peter didn’t mind. His dog was smart.

Now Rex liked to fetch things for Peter. He would bring him his
slippers. He would bring him toys and balls and sticks. In fact Rex was
always looking out for things to bring Peter. This was because Peter gave
Rex a sweet when he did. It was his reward.

One day Peter was sitting in his garden when Rex came running up
to him. Rex had a piece of dirty fur in his mouth. He dropped it in Peter’s
lap. Then sat down and looked at Peter hopefully.
‘What’s this then boy?’ said Peter. ‘’Some old toy you’ve found?’
Peter picked up the lump of fur and looked at it. To his horror he saw it
wasn’t an old toy at all. It was the dead body of the pet rabbit that
belonged to the little girl next door.

Read and write an ending for the story.

The snake

On a gloomy day, as we were going back to the camp in the evening, Toto
had wandered some ten metres in front of me, when suddenly a small
snake slid out from behind a stone, passed right in front of Toto, and
dropped into a crack between two rocks. Toto yelled with terror, then ran
back to me, and stood, with his teeth chattering, holding his hand as if to
show where he had been bitten.

I examined it carefully, but could not see the tiny mark that would have
been made by the snake’s fangs. I made sure of this, and then told
Toto that he was only frightened, and that the snake had not touched him.
He did not believe me. He had been so scared by the sudden sight of the
snake that he was certain that he was hurt and probably imagined that he
was going to die. Knowing that this was not so, I tried to coax him to come
back with me to camp. He would not come. I walked ahead, expecting him
to follow. After a few paces, I looked back and saw the little fellow stretched
out on the ground, convinced that he was too ill to move, and
looking at me sadly not to leave him.

Read and complete the letter.

Dear Mrs. Sally,

I am writing to you regarding school trip for Y4 to Kidzania. Everyone

agrees that you are the kindest head teacher that this school has ever had
and that you do everything in your power to ensure that Greenfield School
is an enjoyable place to learn.

To begin with, I am sure that you have noticed that Y4 have worked
exceptionally hard this year and produced some outstanding work,
particularly in English. However, we are all now tired and really need
something to give us a boost until the end of term. A trip to Kidzania would
be the perfect solution!

Read the text and answer the questions:
Knife Edge
All of a sudden, Rob realised this wasn't a good idea. Knife Edge towered above
them like a skyscraper and he felt his stomach churn.

"Should we turn back?" he asked.

"What's wrong with you? Are you chicken?" Lee teased.

Sadly, Rob shook his head and they carried on walking up the narrow path. At the
bottom of the mountain there were a few trees lined up in a row like soldiers.
Fresh snow looked as white as cotton wool and it crunched under their feet as
they took each step.

Nervously, Rob glanced up towards the peak of the mountain but he couldn't see
it. Dark, swirling clouds covered the peak and they were getting darker and more
sinister. While Rob and Lee climbed, the sky quickly became as black as a cave at
midnight. A storm has arrived. Suddenly, there was a defeating clap of thunder
and a brilliant flash of lightning.

A few minutes later they reached the top of the mountain. Beneath them the
houses in their street look like little sparkling diamonds. "Hammer in the flag and
let's get out of here," muttered Rob. This was Lee's big idea. They had made a
banner out of an old bed sheets before they set off. It said 'We climbed Knife
Edge' in bright red paint. Although it was freezing, Lee had carried it all the way
up the mountain with his bare hands! As Lee lifted his arm to hammer in the
poles, the boys heard a low roar. Slowly and cautiously, they turned round and in

24
the gloomy darkness they saw two glowing eyes staring at them. Angrily, it roared
at Rob and Lee and started creeping towards them. Its monstrous paws gently
padded along the snow and barely made a sound.

Without thinking, Rob held up the hammer. It caught the lion's eye. "Oi! Lion!
Fetch!" With all his strength, Rob threw the hammer so the lion ran towards it.
Without hesitation, Lee and Rob ran in the opposite direction and continued
straight down the mountain. Panting, they reached the bottom of Knife Edge and
slid through a gap in the fence. Although they couldn't see the beast, they heard
an angry roar from the peak of the mountain.

Shaken but unharmed, Rob and Lee walked home together. It was the last time
Rob would never go along with one of Lee's plans!

Becoming an Artist
Mario and his brother Jose owned an art store in York, which they were very proud of.
They sold the best paints, the best sketch pads, the best stationery, and the best easels.
Artists from all over the world came to their store to buy their supplies. Whether they were

"Can I help you?" Mario asked the man.

"I'm not sure. I don't know. You see, I... well, I actually don't have... The thing is, I'd like to buy
some... But maybe I should just... I think I'll come back another time." The man spoke so
quickly that he stumbled over his words, and then left almost immediately.

Mario looked at Jose. "Was it something I said?" he asked his business partner.

"No," Jose replied. "I don't think that man was ready to become an artist yet."

Mario and Jose forgot about the man and went back to their other customers, making
sure that they had enough of their special watercolor paints, their oil paints, and their
extra sharp charcoal pencils. You never knew what artists might need for their work!
A week later, the man was back. Mario stayed at the cash register and let Jose try this time.

"Hello, you're back," Jose said with a smile on his face, to make the man feel welcome.
"Please feel free to look around our store, and let me know if you have any questions."

Jose let the man walk around on his own, so that he wouldn't feel nervous. Mario and Jose
stayed by the cash register, but kept an eye on the man as he went up and down each
aisle of the store. Fifteen minutes later, the man came to the front of the store with a
sketch pad and some charcoal pencils.

"I'd like to buy these, but I don't have any money. I'm sorry, I don't know what to do."

"That's no problem," Mario said. "Since it's your first time here, consider these two items a
gift. It's always scary to start out as an artist. We wish you luck!"

The man looked up at Mario and Jose and smiled. "Thank you so much for your kindness,"
he said. "I won't forget this."

Two years later, an enormous package was delivered to Mario and Jose's store. What could it
be? They hadn't ordered anything this large. They opened it, and inside was a beautiful
painting of their store-the entrance, Mario and Jose inside it, the sculpture outside the store!
Attached to the painting was a note, which read, "You helped me start my journey as an artist.
Please accept this payment as thanks!"

Mario and Jose looked up the artist's name, and sure enough, it was the man who had come
into their store without being able to pay for supplies. He was now a successful artist, living in
Italy, and selling his work all over the world!

Mario and Jose framed the painting and proudly put it at the front of their store.
