SECTION A: Map and photograph skills
Answer all items in this section

ITEM 1
Study the East Africa 1:50,000(Uganda) map extract of Lukaya series Y732, sheet 79/2, and
the texts provided and do the tasks that follow.

(a) Anita hired a Boda-boda rider to take her from a point at Grid reference 739829 to
868940. The Boda-boda fare is 5100 shillings per head per kilometer.

Task.
Determine how much money Anita spent on her journey. (05 scores)

(b) Ajulo Prisca is a UPDF artillery unit officer giving artillery support to ground soldiers
defending Lukaya town from rebels hiding in Kirinya swamps. She operates a heavy
artillery gun positioned on top of a ridge at Mabale trigonometrical station(secondary). She
received a radio call from her commander who instructed her to turn the gun at bearing1500and
fire a rocket missile that hit 10.2km from her position.

Task.
Help Ajulo Prisca to determine the feature the rocket missile hit. (05 scores)

(c) Wekesa is planning to settle in the area between Northings 90 and 99, and Eastings 76 and
83. He is planning to construct Rental houses and his home. He needs your guidance.

Task.
(i) Help Mr. Wekesa by highlighting the challenges he is likely to face after settling in the
area identified. (05 scores)
(ii) With specific examples from the map extract, Help Mr. Wekesa to choose appropriate
area and give reasons to support your answer. (05 scores)

ITEM 2
Photographic Skills
Study fig1, a photograph from one of the places in Uganda, and the text provided below it.
Use them to answer the tasks that follow.
You are a student of S.4 intending to carry out a fieldwork study. You are among the few
selected students to carry out a pilot study with your teacher. Your teacher is of a view of
visiting the area shown in the photograph.

2 Turnover
Task.
a) Draw a landscape sketch of the area in the photograph and on it mark and name the
following features;
(i) Vegetation types
(ii) Drainage feature
(iii) Relief features. (10 scores)

b) Giving evidence from the photograph, describe the tourist attractions that can be seen when
you visit this area. (05 scores)
c) What recommendations would you make to the local community to improve the area for
Tourism. (05 scores)

SECTION B
PART 1
Answer one item from this part.
ITEM 3
Study the text and fig.2 provided and use them to answer this item.

People in Kisoro and Kigezi highlands have impressive relief landform features, which are
potential resources. However, the community members cannot utilize these relief features
sustainably and this has caused disasters. The area planning committee would like to get your
advice on how help the people.

Task.
(a)You have been chosen in the planning committee meeting, to prepare a speech pointing
out the various challenges that are facing the community. (10 scores)
(b) Advise the people in the area on how to overcome the challenges. (10 scores)

ITEM 4.
Study the text and support materials provided to answer this item.
There is increased rate of deforestation in different parts of Africa. Millions of trees are cut
down annually which is a great threat to the environment and climate in particular. This is well
evident in the images shown in the photographs below.

Task.
Write an article to appear in the Daily Monitor and highlight the various causes of the
phenomenon and steps that can be taken to combat the Action. (20 scores)

Answer one item from this part

ITEM 5
The ministry of trade and commerce in Uganda is organizing a writing competition on the
theme “ensuring economic growth and development through promoting equitable trade with
regional countries”. You are provided with the statistics information about Uganda’s value of
exports to and imports from Kenya and Tanzania. In your analysis, you have discovered a
challenge in trade with one of these countries that Uganda trades with.

(a)Basing on the statistics from the tables above, make a write up and explain the effects of
such a trend on the development of Uganda. (10 scores)

(b) Make a written presentation and advise the ministry of Trade and Commerce in Uganda
on how to improve the country’s balance of trade. (10 scores)

ITEM 6.
Lagos town leaders in Nigeria toured the areas that make up the town before transforming it
to the city status. From their findings, the roads were narrow, and most of the structures had
no access provisions for persons with disabilities. The garbage littered the core areas and town
neighborhood. A resolution was made to have the city transformed.

Task.
(a)As a resident of Lagos who is participating in implementing this vision, write a message
about the views you have to make the Lagos vision 2040 a reality. (10 scores)

(b) Make a written presentation and show the main objectives and aims of developing Lagos
into a large city. (10 scores)
