Blessing Poem

The poem 'Blessing' illustrates the critical importance of water through vivid imagery and language features, depicting a scene where a pipe bursts and people rush to collect water. It explores themes of poverty and hope, contrasting the pain of water scarcity with the joy it brings when it arrives, as seen in the joyful image of children dancing under the water. Ultimately, the poem conveys that despite the struggles faced due to lack of water, there remains a sense of hope and blessing associated with its presence.

Blessing poem describes an event when a pipe bursts and people run to collect water.

If you
read it carefully, the reader feels importance of water for people through language features.
The first line mentions “the skin cracks like a pod”, cracking of skin suggests that there is pain
and it hurts. The poet uses a simile to compare the skin to a pod. This makes reader to link skin
to dry soil and therefore imagine a cracked soil. The second line gives us the reason for the
cracked skin; “there never is enough water”. The main purpose in this opening is to prepare the
reader for a strong and imaginary reading.
“Imagine the drip of it” creates a dramatic effect. There is shortage of water and so only a drip
of it can be imagined. There is alliteration in “small splash” to improve the effect. Together with
the sound of an “echo in a tin mug”, the reader visualizes a drip splashing into an empty tin
mug and remembers the shortage of water. “Empty tin mug” points to poverty of people
because only poor people will have tin mugs. Then, the poet compares the echo sound to
“voice of a kindly god” which is used as a metaphor and causes to think about water as a holy
subject. There is also a personification feature used in “voice of a kindly god”. Actually, the first
stanza makes the reader think that the god is not kindly because there is never enough water,
but in the second stanza the god is mentioned as kindly because he gives a drip of water.
Third stanza starts with the word “sometimes” because plenty of water comes only sometimes.
The word “sudden rush of fortune” explains that arrival of water is unexpected and points to
pure luck for something precious. “Silver crashes the ground” is used because color of water
under the sun looks like silver and it describes water as precious and valuable. Silver is used as
a metaphor for water. Then the “the flow has found a roar of tongues” explains that water
meets people who are rushing because they are thirsty and shouting to collect water as much
as possible. The poet uses personification to increase the effect.

The last stanza concludes with a positive tone with children dancing under the water. The
stanza begins with the image of “naked children” to remind the reader about the poverty of
people. The word “screaming” suggests some pain but then comes some happiness with the
choice of words “the liquid sun”. Children are dancing and screaming under both water and sun
which creates an idea of “liquid sun”. The word “blessing” is mentioned in the final stanza:
water is a blessing for people because they never have enough water. There is personification
used in the words “blessing sings over their small bones” which also create a happy image of
dancing children under water. “Small bones” make reader to remember the poverty of people.
In my opinion, the main purpose for finishing the poem with a positive tone is to create an
image of “hope”. Although people suffer for not having enough water, there is always hope.
