World war again
1. The reason for the United states being neutral during the 1920s and 1930s is because
there was a very strong isolationist sentiment that was caused by the first world war. In
addition to this the desire for isolationism was also fueled by a desire to work on
problems such as the economic crisis that was the great depression. This very strong
isolationist sentiment began to shift after the passage of the lend-lease act which
allowed for the US to provide aid to countries in war if it was vital to nations defense.
This act led to the general attitude shifting from a strong isolationist sentiment to a
primarily interventionist sentiment.
2. The united states remained officially neutral in world war 2 up until december 8th 1941
but much before that the united states had provided aid and efforts towards the allied
forces through the trade of 50 battleships, the cash and carry policy where they could
sell materials to warring countries and then sold only to allied forces, and placed trading
restrictions and sanctions on japan. With this evidence I believe that the United States
unofficially broke its neutrality when the neutrality acts were revised and the embargo on
the sale of war materials was lifted.
3. There are 4 main events that lead up to ww2 and they had varied reactions from the
general public. Starting with the first neutrality act which was passed august 31st 1935
and prohibited the export of arms, munitions, and war materials to nations at war. This
was done to stay out of further conflicts and was a very good idea for the time as the
nation was just recovering from the great depression and the effects of ww1.
Secondly the cash and carry policy which was an amendment to the neutrality act that
was made after Germany invaded poland. This policy was made by Roosevelt by asking
congress to allow France and Britain to buy war materials for cash and carry them away
with their own ships. This decision was supported by many as it helped the US economy
while still staying out of the war and it stimulated the United Kingdom's manufacturing
process by allowing the purchase of war goods.
A third action of support made by the US before entering the war was providing aid to
China as it was threatened by japan. The US assistance strengthened China's air
supremacy and the trade restrictions of Japan hurt its expansion through asia. This
decision strengthened foreign affairs between the US and China but the aid hurt the
general public of China by contributing to the hyperinflation of the yuan.
And lastly the lend lease act which created a system where the united states could lend
and provide supplies, food, and equipment without entering the war. This system
weakened the US neutrality but provided tremendous aid that took a load off the soviet
union and britain during the war. It heavily bolstered efforts against nazi Germany and
was second only to the US entering the war themselves. Intotal over 50 billion dollars in
aid was provided by the US to the allied forces with 32 billion of that going to the U.K.
