Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method that emphasizes listening comprehension through physical actions in response to verbal commands, making learning engaging and stress-free. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) focuses on interaction and meaningful communication, prioritizing fluency over grammatical accuracy in real-life contexts. Both methods utilize various tangible and digital materials to enhance the learning experience.

Total Physical Response

(TPR)
A.Definition/Description
Definition/description of the method Total Physical Response
(TPR) is a language teaching method developed by Dr. James
Asher, where students respond to verbal commands with physical
actions. This approach mimics how children acquire their first
language by associating words with movements, making learning
more natural and engaging.
B.Focus
What is the focus of this method as it is used in language
teaching-learning process? TPR focuses on listening
comprehension by allowing students to understand and
react to language before they start speaking. It reduces
stress in learning since students are not forced to speak
immediately, making the process more enjoyable and
confidence-building.
C. Emphasis The emphasis of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method lies
in the connection between language learning and physical
movement. It is based on the idea that language learning is more
effective when learners can physically respond to language input,
typically through actions that correspond to verbal commands.
This approach mirrors how young children naturally learn their
first language by associating words with actions.

Communicative
Language Teaching
A.Definition/Description
Communicative language teaching (CLT) is an
approach to language teaching that emphasizes
interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of
study. It is learner-centered, focusing on developing
students' ability to use language effectively in real-life
situations rather than just mastering grammatical rules.
B.Focus In Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), the focus
is on meaningful communication rather than just
grammatical accuracy. CLT emphasizes real-life
interaction and functional language use. There are two
key focus methods in CLT.
1. Focus on Meaning (Meaning-Based Approach)
2. Focus on Form (Form-Focused Instruction)
C.Emphasis Through the CLT approach, learners are
encouraged to develop their communicative
competence by using the language in meaningful
and real-life situations. This approach emphasizes
the importance of fluency over accuracy, making it
a popular choice for language instruction in many
contexts.
D. Materials to Use
