Introduction to Vedic Astrology

“Gnanaa-nandamayam Devam Nirmala Spatikaa-krutim

Adhaaram Sarva-Vidhyanam Hyagreeva Mupasmaye”

Astrology is a divine science. Vedic Astrology or Jyotisha is one of the greatest gifts to
mankind. Astrology subject is at least 7000 years old and has become an integral divine
part of Indian culture and life.

The biggest casualties of today’s so called modern civilization, where the thrust is on
ARTHA(wealth achieving) and KAMA(desire’s gratification) at the cost of
DHARMA(righteousness living) and MOKSHA(bondage-liberation).
A thorough understanding and interpretation will help contribute to Harmony and
Peace to people; by forgiving others for their incompetence and lapses. These lapses
are consequence of our own past deeds (KARMA). This bad karmic account is a
roadblock for progress.
1
Vedic astrology is part of Veda (Vedanga). VEDA means ‘Knowledge’, the knowledge of
ancient India. Vedic knowledge is divided into six major branches or Vedanga. Vedic
astrology is also called jyotish (jyoti-light or eye ish-ishwara or god).

Vedic astrology birth charts interprets events through TIME. The law of Time, structure
all things. Time is the powerhouse that rules the universe. We all wonder at Birth and
fear at Death. We all value and count our moments (Time).

The systemic rhythm of time is the basis through which actions happen. Time is the
great God (Mahakala or Mahadeva/Shiva). Time force is great Goddess (Mahakali or
Mahashakti). Time is the Divine (GOD) system that Generates-Operates-Destroys
cosmic life and form. We are living in an ocean of cosmic influences-Time transmitted
by Planets. We experience positive/negative encounters as the events based on the
birth charts like - Birth, Education,Marriage, Disease, Conflict, Career, Status,
Litigation,…..ect and finally Death.

“WHAT IS BORN MUST DIE”. Each planet in an individual birth chart represents a
particular kind of yoga (Combination). The planets are awesome forces influencing us
for spiritual enlightment. Our birth chart is a mirror of our soul and its incarnation along
with its outer behavior. The planets show the energies that we need to master our mind
for calmness and spiritual enlightment.

Vedic astrology chart offers us a planetary map at a given time and place of
birth as a guide to our life and gives us an advanced time profile of our
situation/behavior to help us understand what compels us to act. It also helps us
determine whether to shun or promote any event occurrednce for self improvement.

2
Types of Vedas
There are four Indo-Aryan Vedas:

The Rig Veda contains hymns about their mythology;

The Sama Veda consists mainly of hymns about religious rituals;

The Yajur Veda contains instructions for religious rituals;

The Atharva Veda consists of spells against enemies, sorcerers, and diseases

Parts of Veda
Vedanga has 6 parts

1) CHANDAS
2) VYAKARANA
3) KALPA
4) JYOTISHA
5) SIKSHA
6) NIRUKTHA

3
Astrology

Astrology is a VEDANGA under (ATHARVANA VEDA)

Astrology related to Astronomy = Astrology is interpretation of position of PLANETS with

Mathematics for prediction; Study of Heavenly bodies which uses mathematics, Physics
and Chemistry is Astronomy.

4
Siksha: This auxiliary discipline has focused on the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet,
accent, quantity, stress, melody and rules of combination of words during a Vedic
recitation.

Chandas: This auxiliary discipline has focused on the poetic meters, including those
based on fixed number of syllables per verse, and those based on fixed number of
words per verse.

Vyakarana: This auxiliary discipline has focused on the rules of grammar and linguistic
analysis to establish the exact form of words and sentences to properly express ideas.

Nirukta: This auxiliary discipline has focused on linguistic analysis to help establish the
proper meaning of the words, given the context they are used in.

Kalpa: This field focused on standardizing procedures for Vedic rituals, rites of passage
rituals associated with major life events such as birth, wedding and death in family, as
well as discussing the personal conduct and proper duties of an individual in different
stages of his life.

Jyotisha: Auspicious time for rituals, astrology and astronomy. This auxiliary Vedic
discipline focused on time keeping.

PARTS OF ASTROLOGY
1) SIDDHANTHA = Study of Heavenly bodies

2) SAMHITHA = Meterology (Mundane Astrology - Earth quakes, Climate, natural

calamities, Countries growth. Group casualties etc)

3) HORA SHASTRA= Influence of planets on All area of Mankind

6 Sub Parts of Astrology

1) GOLA = Planets

2) GANITHA = Mathematical Calculations

3) NIMITHA = Omens

4) JATHAKA = Birth Horoscope

5) PRASHNA = Query for events

6) MUHURTHA = Timing An Activity for Good!! Events

Hindu calculation of time comes to us from sage (Ganita) who is mentioned in the
Manusmriti and the Mahabharata. He calculated the duration of each cycle of creation in
(human years). He divided the cosmic time into Kalpas, which is a day and night in the
time and space of Brahma. It is considered to be equal to 8.64 billion years (Vishnu Purana).
Each Kalpa consists of two Artha Kalpas of 4.32 billion years each. They are the day and
night of Brahman. Each Kalpa is further divided into 1000 maha yugas. Each maha yuga is
again divided into four yugas, namely krita(Satya) yuga, treat yuga, dvapara yuga and kali
yuga. Their duration varies. Krita yuga the first in the series has the longest duration of 1.728
million years and kali yuga, which is the last and the current, has a duration of only 432000
years.

6
Kalachakra

Time is God

MAHAKALA (Time keeper)

MAHAKALI ( Time destroyer )

According to the Hindu theory of creation, time (Sanskrit 'kal') is a manifestation of God.
Creation begins when God makes his energies active and ends when he withdraws all

7
his energies into a state of inactivity. God is timeless, for time is relative and ceases to
exist in the Absolute.

Kalachakra
The Cycle of Time God creates the cycle of time, called Kalachakra, in order to create
divisions and movements of life and sustain the worlds in periodic time frames. God
also uses time to create the 'illusions' of life and death. It is time, which is accountable
for old age, death, and dying of his creations. When we overcome time, we become
immortal. Death is not the end of the line, but a gateway to the next cycle, to birth. This
is also true of the universe itself and akin to the cyclic patterns in the rhythms of nature.
4 Yugas =1 Chaturyugas

71 Chaturyugas = 1 Manvantara (1 life span of Manu)

SOLAR SYSTEM

12
The Sun is one of the stars of our galaxy and is head of Nine Planets

Our galaxy as far as the origin of planets, it’s believed that the cloud of gas and dust
condensed to form the SOLAR SYSTEM about 4.6 billion years ago. Our solar system
consists of the Sun and several celestial bodies which revolve around the sun. There
are majorly nine planets revolving around the sun namely;

MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH, MARS, JUPITER, SATURN

URANUS; NEPTUNE ; PLUTO( currently not considered as a planet as per

astronomers). Other celestial objects revolving around the sun comprises of minor
planets (natural satellite), Asteroids, Meteors, Comets, Dust and Solar wind.

13
Planets SUN

Sun is in the heart of our solar system—is a orange Dwarf star, a hot ball of glowing gases.
Its gravity holds the solar system together, keeping everything from the biggest planets to
the smallest particles of debris in its orbit. The Sun is mainly composed of hydrogen and
helium (75% and 25% by mass). Nearly all the remaining matter consists of seven other
elements — oxygen, carbon, neon, nitrogen, magnesium, iron and silicon. For every 1 million
atoms of hydrogen in the sun, there are 98,000 of helium, 850 of oxygen, 360 of carbon,
120 of neon, 110 of nitrogen, 40 of magnesium, 35 of iron and 35of silicon.

The visible part of the sun is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,500 degrees Celsius),
while temperatures in the core reach more than 27 million F (15 million C). It orbits some
25,000 light-years from the galactic core, completing a revolution once every 250 million
years. The sun was born about 4.6 billion years ago. The sun has enough nuclear fuel to
stay much as it is now for another 5 billion years. Its diameter is about 1.39 million kilometers
(864,000 miles), or 108 times that of Earth. Its mass is about 3,30,000 times that of Earth.
The Sun currently pumps about 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium

every second, converting 4 million tons of matter into energy every second as a result.
This energy, which can take between 10,000 and 170,000 years to escape from its core,

14
is the source of the Sun's light and heat which we have today. The Sun rotates faster at
its equator than at its poles. The rotational period is approximately 25.6 days at the equator
and 33.5 days at the poles. Sunlight at the top of Earth's atmosphere is composed of about
50% infrared light, 40% visible light, and 10% ultraviolet light( Rahu kaala ). The Sun has
eight known planets. This includes four terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and
Mars), two gas giants(Jupiter and Saturn), and two ice giants(Uranus and Neptune). The
Solar System also has at least five dwarf planets, an asteroid belt, numerous comets, and
a large number of icy bodies which lie beyond the orbit of Neptune and Pluto.

Actual position of Sun in Horoscope.

15
MERCURY

Mercury is the nearest planet to the Sun. The semimajor axis of Mercury’s orbit—that is,the
planet’s average distance from the Sun—is 58 million kilometers (5.8 Cr KM), or 0.39 AU.

Mercury is the smallest planet (except for the dwarf planets like pluto), having a radius of
approx 2400 kilometers. Mercury’s high density tells us that it must be composed largely
of heavier materials such as Iron and Nickel metals.

Mercury, being close to the Sun is very hot on its day, but because it has no atmosphere,
it gets surprisingly cold during the nights. The temperature on the surface is (430 °C) . The
temperature drops, reaching (–170 °C) at night. Mercury takes about 176 Earth days to spin
once on its axis (the rotation period), and about 88 Earth days to complete one orbit
(revolution) traveling through space at nearly 112,000 mph (180,000 km/h) around the
Sun . A year in Mercury is 88 days and a Mercury day is 176 Earth days. Mercury is the
second hottest planet. Mercury does not experience any seasons.

17
VENUS

Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is named after the Roman goddess of love
and beauty. Venus is 7,520 miles in diameter (12,103 kilometres). Venus is enshrouded
by a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid clouds and spacecrafts are difficult
to penetrate its surface.Venus surface is actually hotter than Mercury’s despite being nearly
twice as far from the Sun. It is the brightest of the planets. Surface temperatures climbing
above (470 degrees Celsius) and is the hottest planet. The yearon Venus is shorter than
its day. Venus circles the Sun once every 225 Earth days, but it takes 243( day& night) days
to rotate once on its axis. Venus’ rotation is somewhat unusual in that it is both very slow
(243 Earth days per Venus day, slightly longer than Venus’ year) and RETROGRADE.
Venus rotates in the opposite direction to most other planets, moving clockwise. The interior
of Venus is probably very similar to that of Earth an iron core about 3000 km in radius, a
molten rocky mantle comprising the majority of the planet. Venus is 162 million miles (261
million kilometres) away from Earth. This makes it the closest planet to us. There are no
seasons on Venus. Venus is 10.82 Cr KM from the Sun.

18
Venus occupies 2 positions in Horoscope, It has 2

19
MARS

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. The planet is named after Mars, the Roman god
of war. It is also the second nearest planet to the Earth. It has an orbital period equal to 687
Earth days and a rotational period equal to 24hrs 37mins and 22.6 second. It moves around
the Sun at a mean distance of 228 million km (22.8 Cr KM), or about 1.5 times the distance
of Earth from the Sun. The Mars tilt gives rise to seasons on it similar to Earth. Mars is a
small planet, larger than only Mercury and slightly more than half the size of Earth.

It has an equatorial radius of 3,396 km (2,110 miles). The surface of Mars has an orange-
reddish color because its soil has iron oxide or rust particles in it. The sky onMars often
appears pink or light orange because the dust in the soil is blown into Mars' thin atmosphere
by winds on Mars. The soil of Mars also holds nutrients such as sodium, potassium, chloride
and magnesium.

20
Mars' moons are among the smallest in the solar system. Phobos is a bit larger than Deimos,
and orbits only 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) above the Martian surface. Mars was once
believed to be home to intelligent life. Mars is the only other planet besides Earth that has
polar ice caps. On average, the temperature on Mars is about -60 degrees Celsius. In winter,
near the poles temperatures can get down to -125 degrees C. A summer day on Mars may
go upto (20 degrees C).

Mars occupies 2 positions in Horoscope, It has 2

21
JUPITER

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System. It is a gas giant
Jupiter is so big that two-and-a-half times that of all the other planets in the Solar System
combined fit in.

Jupiter has been known to astronomers since antiquity. It is named after the Roman god
Jupiter. It has a diameter of 142,984 km. Jupiter is about 90% hydrogen and 10% helium
(by numbers of atoms, 75/25% by mass) with traces of methane, water, ammonia and
“rock”. This is very close to the composition of the primordial Solar Nebula ( black hole )
which holds the secret of universe from which the entire solar system was formed. The
winds blow in opposite directions in adjacent bands. Slight chemical and temperature
differences between these bands are responsible for the colored bands that dominate the
planet’s appearance.

The light colored bands are called zones; the dark ones belts. Jupiter radiates more energy
into space than it receives from the Sun. The interior of Jupiter is hot the core is probably
about 20,000 K. Jupiter has rings like Saturn’s, but much fainter and smaller. It is 77.7 Cr
kilometres (5.20 AU) away from the Sun.

22
Jupiter has 67 moons orbiting the planet. And these are just the confirmed ones, and there
are potentially more undiscovered!. Jupiters largest moon is called Ganymede andis the
biggest one in the solar system. Jupiter takes 4328 earth days to orbit the Sun or simply
12 years. A day on Jupiter is just 9 hours and 55 minutes!!! that is the speed of rotation. Not
experience seasons like Earth and Mars. Average temperature is -108 degree celcius.
Jupiter is so big that over 1,300 Earths could fit inside of it.

Jupitor occupies 2 positions in Horoscope, It has 2

own houses

23
SATURN

Saturn, sixth planet from the sun, is the most remote of the planets. Saturn is a gas giant
with no solid surface; it is 9.45 times wider than the Earth and 95 times more massive, with
a radius of 36,183.7 miles (58,232 kilometers). It is circled by hundreds of rings consisting
of small, ice-covered particles a dazzling system of icy rings. Saturn's ring system extends
up to 175,000 miles (282,000 kilometers) from the planet. Saturn is named after the Roman
god of wealth and agriculture. Saturn is a massive ball made mostly of hydrogen and helium.
A Day is 10.7 hrs on Saturn that is its rotation for day/night. A Year is 29 Earth years that
is it takes revolution around the sun. Its around 93.4 Cr Km from the Sum. It takes 80 minutes
for the Sun light to travel from sun to saturn. There are around 62 know moons.

Saturn occupies 2 positions in Horoscope, It has 2

own houses

24
Earth

Earth orbits the Sun at an average distance of 150 million kilometres (93 million miles).
Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the fifth largest in the solar system, with a
diameter just a few hundred kilometres larger than that of Venus. It's the only planet
known to have an atmosphere containing free oxygen, oceans of water on its surface
and, life. It's smaller than the four gas giants — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune —
but larger than the three other rocky planets, Mercury, Mars and Venus.

Earth has a diameter of roughly 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometres) and is round because
gravity pulls earth's matter into a ball. But, it's not perfectly round. Earth is really an
"oblate spheroid," because its spin causes it to be squashed at its poles and swollen at
the equator. Water covers roughly 71 percent of Earth's surface, and most of that is in
the oceans. About a fifth of Earth's atmosphere consists of oxygen, produced by plants.
The oldest Earth rocks are about 3.8 billion years old, although some small, very old
grains found in sandstone have been dated at 4.1 billion years. The solar system is
believed to be about 4.6 billion years old. Therefore, there is little evidence left on Earth
about the very early solar system. Some asteroids and comets, however, have not been
altered much since their formation, and studying them can provide information about
what the solar system was like when Earth was first forming on the big bang theory!

25
It has a solid inner core and a liquid outer core. The temperature of the outer core
ranges from 4400 °C in the outer regions to 6100 °C near the inner core. Earth's inner
core is the innermost geologic layer of the Earth. It is primarily a solid ball with a radius
of about 1,220 kilometres (760 miles).

The inner core is believed to be composed of an iron–nickel alloy with few other
elements. The temperature at the inner core's surface is estimated to be approximately
6100°C which is about the temperature at the surface of the Sun.

The outer core, about 2,200 kilometres (1,367 miles) thick, is mostly composed of liquid
iron and nickel. Earth’s magnetic field is created in the swirling outer core. Magnetism in
the outer core is about 50 times stronger than it is on the surface. Earth’s magnetic field
is crucial to life on our planet. It protects the planet from the charged particles of the
solar wind. Without the shield of the magnetic field, the solar wind would strip Earth’s
atmosphere of the ozone layer that protects life from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

26
Moon

What is a Moon?

Moons – also known as natural satellites – orbit planets and asteroids in our solar
system. Earth has one moon, and there are more than 200 moons in our solar system.
Most of the major planets – all except Mercury and Venus – have moons. Pluto and
some other dwarf planets, as well as many asteroids, also have small moons. Saturn
and Jupiter have the most moons, with dozens orbiting each of the two giant planets.

27
Moons come in many shapes, sizes, and types. A few have atmospheres and even
hidden oceans beneath their surfaces. Most planetary moons probably formed from the
discs of gas and dust circulating around planets in the early solar system, though some
are "captured" objects that formed elsewhere and fell into orbit around larger worlds.

Moon occupies 1 positions in Horoscope, It has 1

own house.

28
Earth Oceans

While there is only one global ocean, the vast body of water that covers 71 percent of
the Earth is geographically divided into distinct named regions. The boundaries between
these regions have evolved over time for a variety of historical, cultural, geographical,
and scientific reasons.

Historically, there are four named ocean basins: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic.
However, most countries - including the United States - now recognize the Southern
(Antarctic) as the fifth ocean basin. The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are the most
commonly known. The Mariana Trench (western Pacific Ocean is the deepest known
point in Earth's oceans. In 2010 the United States Centre for Coastal & Ocean Mapping
measured the depth of the Challenger Deep at 10,994 meters (11 Kilometre).

29
Longitude & Latitude (Our Global Address)

Latitude and Longitude: Our Global Address

Every location on earth has a global address. Because the address is in numbers,
people can communicate about location no matter what language they might speak. A
global address is given as two numbers called coordinates. The two numbers are a
location's latitude number and its longitude number ("Lat/Long").

Longitude ranges from 0° to 180° East and 0° to 180° West. The longitude angle is
measured from the centre of the earth as shown in the earth graphic to the right.

The zero point of longitude is defined as a point in Greenwich, England called the Prime
Meridian. Prime Meridian is the line called the International Date Line.

The demarcation of the latitude coordinate is done with circles on the globe parallel to
the equator. These parallel circles, fittingly enough, are called parallels of latitude. The
figure to the right shows several parallels of latitude. Latitude goes for 0° at the equator
to +90° N at the North Pole or -90° S at the South Pole where the angle is also
measured from the centre of the earth as shown in the earth graphic to the right.

30
Longitude from centre or equator is set by North N or South S Latitude from centre or
equator is st by East E or West W

Longitude and
Latitude are used
to find the
address/Location of
particular area

Longitude
Longitude is the measurement east or west of the prime meridian. Longitude is
measured by imaginary lines that run around the Earth vertically (up and down) and
meet at the North and South Poles. These lines are known as meridians. Each meridian
measure one arc degree of longitude. The distance around the Earth measures 360
degrees.

31
A prime meridian is a meridian (a line of longitude) in a geographic coordinate system at
which longitude is defined to be 0°.

Latitude

Latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north–south position of a point on

the Earth's surface. Latitude is an angle which ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90°
(North or South) at the poles. Lines of constant latitude, or parallels, run east–west as
circles parallel to the equator.
