Assignment 1

The document discusses the influence of genetics on General Conceptual Ability (GCA), highlighting the need for caution in interpreting data that suggests a genetic basis for GCA due to environmental factors. It also outlines developmental stages in children according to Piaget's theory, detailing appropriate toys for different ages and their educational purposes. Additionally, the document lists various psychological defense mechanisms.

Chapter 9:

A) Positive
B) -.97

C) In the data, we can clearly see that the data suggests that the General Conceptual
Ability (GCA) is dependent on genes. The data suggested that by showing that as the
genetics of the people being tested was closer genetically, they have a similar GCA.

This can be super dangerous and we should be very cautious in interpreting these
results because this can mean that General Conceptual Ability is mainly dependant on
the genes of the individuals which can result in the idea that certain people or culture
has the best genes for that.

As the data says, these are data for relatives rearing-together, Meaning that they are
afflicted by a similar environment which means a lot of stuff are at play here such as
education capabilities, socioeconomics and so on.

A good way to look at it is through the range of reaction theory we discussed before
which suggests that people living have a range of possible capabilities, and to maximize
the range, a better environment is required, and so having those relatives rearing
together makes it so that they are afflicted by similar environment making it hard to
pinpoint the reason of why the data shows that the closer the genetics makes it so that
people have a similar GCA value.

Chapter 11:

6 months old:

Toy: Rubber duck, its purpose is that it’s simple, and not complicated, and it allows the
kids at that age to discover their 5 senses and motor system.

According to Piaget’s Stage theory, kids between 0 and 2 are in the sensorimotor stage.
In this stage, kids discover and experiment with their 5 senses and motor functions.

At this stage, the kids would try to touch the toy with their hand, discovering their tactile sense,
they would squeeze it, slowly discovering their motor skills, taste it or bite it, discovering their
gustatory sense.

A great thing also at this stage is that kids at this stage learns object permanence meaning that
they discover that even if they can’t see the object, it still exists, and so since this is a simple toy,
parents can use it to enforce and teach their kids the object permanent concept by taking the
toy and hiding it.

4 Years old:

Toy: Doll or cars, its purpose is to allow the kids to enjoy and have fun without it being logically
involved rather imagination

According to piaget, kids at this stage are at the preoperational stage where they don’t have still
appropriate logic rather than simple thinking. At this stage kids tend to be egocentric meaning
that they only see the world through their eyes. That means they don’t realize that there exists
people who are opposite to them and they view the world from their view only.

This toy is great because it enhances the creativity and imagination and communication and
social skills for the kids by allowing them to play, talk and express their feelings with the dolls
and roleplay with them, play and simulate driving a car and so on.

Given that this toy isn’t complicated for thinking and so, it’s appropriate game for a 4 years old.

8 years old:

Toy: Chess, its purpose is to enhance the kids problem-solving skills and allow them to read and
understand others around them.

At this stage, kids starts developing their logic and understanding of the world around them, and
their egocentrism start to disappear, making them aware that other the world isn’t only exist in
their view because they start to think and so having a game like chess where they need logic
and memorization and understanding and thinking of the opponents plans, and to start
countering it and so, would make it great to enhance the kid’s problem solving.

It can teach kids classification as well since they will start to know how to classify pieces from
strong to weak and so on.
