infection.
D. Presentation of the lesson
VIDEO PRESENTATION
The teacher will present a video to the students and they will be asked
with the following questions after.
What are your thoughts about the video?
What could be the cause of illness?
E. Discussing new lessons and practicing new skills
Infection is the invasion and growth of germs in the body. The germs
may be bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi, or other microorganisms.
Infections can begin anywhere in the body and may spread all through
it. An infection can cause fever and other health problems, depending
on where it occurs in the body.
Pathogens are disease causing organisms which can be viruses,
bacteria, fungi, among others.
FOUR STAGES OF INFECTION
Incubation stage – it is the first stage. It is the period starting from the
entry of the pathogen until the appearance of the first sign. The exact
time frame of the incubation stage varies depending on the
infection. For example, chickenpox, takes two (2) to three (3) weeks
of incubation; common colds takes one (1) to two (2) days; , while
influenza holds one (1) to three (3) days; and mumps holds twelve (12)
to twenty-five (25) days.
Prodromal stage – this is the second stage. It starts from the onset of
non-specific signs and symptoms such as fever, headache, and
fatigue. The duration of the prodromal stage varies depending on the
type of infection.
Illness stage – it begins when more specific signs and symptoms
appear. For example, the common cold is characterized by sore throat,
sinus congestion, and rhinitis, mumps manifested by earache, high
fever, and salivary gland swelling.
During this period, the disease is most severe. The person exhibits
overt signs and symptoms of disease. The number of white blood cells
may increase or decrease on this stage.
Generally, the patient’s immune response and other defense
mechanisms overcome the pathogen and the period of illness ends. If
the disease is not successfully overcome or treated, the patient dies
during this stage.
Convalescence stage - the last stage of infection is an interval when
acute symptoms of infection disappear. The length of recovery
depends on the severity of the infection and the sick person’s general
state of health. Recovery may take several days to months. During this
stage, symptoms resolve, and a person can return to their normal
functions.
By understanding the chain of infection, the sick person must intervene
to prevent the infection from developing any further. When a sick
person acquires an infection, he/she must observe signs and
symptoms of infection and take appropriate actions to prevent the
spread like staying away from other people, and taking the doctor’s
advice seriously.
F. Developing Mastery
Direction: In a ½ crosswise, copy the table below. Then, classify the entries
under choices. Be guided by the stages of infections provided.

G. Evaluation of Learning
The learners will be grouped into 6 groups.
Each group will create 5 recommended actions to prevent and control
the spread of infection in a 1 whole sheet of paper.
They will be given 15 minutes to do this activity.
H. Generalization
The learners will be asked:
Why is it important to learn and understand the stages of infection?
