Mini-Response Essay

A lawsuit is being filed against New York City by homeless individuals, claiming that city cleanups violate their constitutional rights and cause more harm than good. The lawsuit, supported by a housing group, argues that the city fails to provide adequate compensation for confiscated belongings and has led to a significant increase in homelessness. Mayor Eric Adams contends that the sweeps aim to move homeless people into shelters, yet homelessness has risen by 84% since his administration began.

The State of New York is being issued a lawsuit, which may potentially become a class action,

by the homeless people that reside, stating that its city cleanups are violating various homeless

citizens constitutional protections against seizures and illegal searches. The homeless people of

New York believe that the city sweeps are causing more harm than good.

The homeless people of New York argue that the city sweep ups violate their rights and barely

give them compensation for their destroyed items. The article, “ Homeless People Sue New York

City for Throwing Away Their Property”, written by Andy Newman, states that the homeless are

filing a lawsuit against New York City as a result of the city cleanups that were issued by Mayor

Eric Adams in an attempt to decrease homelessness in New York. In the article, it states that a

person is often given a short amount of time to collect all of their possessions, while the

remaining belongings are placed in the garbage. As a result of these various occurrences, the city

was sued by a housing support group and is looking to be filed as a class action by the Safety Net

Project of the Urban Justice Center, six known homeless people, and this group. This lawsuit

hopes to cover thousands of homeless people and argues that the city never provides vouchers or

gives back confiscated possessions. In contrast to this claim, New York City’s mayor, Eric

Adams, claims that he has issued over 10,000 sweeps in an effort to move homeless people into

shelters. However, homelessness has increased 84% since Mayor Adams went into office due to
the fact that obtaining services, including housing, is more difficult since their identification

papers and other documents are being destroyed.

I believe the housing support group is correct in suing New York City because it is a stated fact

in the article that homelessness has increased drastically and the city sweep ups have more

negative effects than positive. I have seen myself the rise in homeless people in the Bronx and

Manhattan. It also states in the article that the government refuses to acknowledge disadvantages

of homelessness and continues to lie to the public instead of taking accountability for what they

are doing. Various homelessness people have reported the mistreatment of New York City and

many New Yorkers have seen first hand the effects of these sweep ups.

Moreover, the state of New York needs to work harder to help its homeless people and the only

way to do that is by listening to what they have to and changing the way they go about helping

them.
