The Digestive System Report
1. The Process of Digestion
Digestion is the process by which food is broken down into small,
absorbable components that the body uses for energy, growth, and repair.
It begins in the mouth and ends with the elimination of waste from the
body.
Steps in the Digestion Process:
  1. Ingestion – Food is taken into the mouth and chewed.
  2. Propulsion – The food moves through the esophagus to the
stomach by muscular contractions called peristalsis.
  3. Mechanical Digestion – Physical breakdown of food by chewing
     and stomach churning.
  4. Chemical Digestion – Enzymes and digestive juices break down
     large molecules into smaller ones.
  5. Absorption – Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream, mainly
     in the small intestine.
  6. Elimination – Waste is removed through the large intestine and
     exits the body.
2. Parts of the Digestive System and Their
Functions
