Chimeras
Human-Animal Hybrids
Zack Baehr
What’s a Chimera?
A Chimera is a hybrid animal, in context
to us, a human-animal hybrid of sorts.
Hybrid creatures do not have to be lab-
produced, and can be found in nature on
occasion.
CHIMERA SKULL
Nargula skull found in
the 1980's, discovered to
be of hybrid DNA in 2019
Mythical Chimera’s
THE MINOTAUR
is a hybrid creature consisting of a Bull’s
head on a man’s body.
THE GRIFFIN
is a hybrid creature consisting of a lion and
an eagle, created in Roman mythology.
GROLAR BEAR
Naturally Grizzly and Polar bear hybrid
Occurring COYWOLVES
Chimera’s Coyote and Eastern Wolf hybrid
NARGULA
Narwhal and Beluga Whale hybrid
What are we doing with
them?
EXPERIMENTAL ORGAN DONORS
Scientists are and intend to utilize genotype manipulation
to alter DNA of animals to benefit ourselves.
Specifically,
pigs and other animals are being experimented on to be
able to provide suitable organs for human transplants.
ARE PEOPLE OKAY WITH THIS?
Roughly 59% of surveyed individuals said they weren’t
opposed to genetically altering animals in such ways.
WHY ARE CHIMERA’S SCARY
The big bad dinosaur from the movie,
Jurassic World is a chimera, being
composed of T-Rex and Velociraptor
DNA due to human experiments.
The idea that someone you walk past on the street might have
a liver that was obtained from a pig is a little odd. The end
result may not be exactly scary, per se, but the means to get
there can be.
Vague science experiments are common tropes in horror
media that spawn horrifying amalgamations, so the fear of
something going wrong and creating a horrendous monster
isn’t a super far-fetched fear.
Zombies are often derived from failed
experiments and vague science.
Where is the line?
How far does this go?
Many people are still unsure if they are alright with The ship of Theseus is a philosophical argument as to
these hybrid experiments. Even more so, people whether a ship is the same ship if it is entirely replaced
