What comes to your mind whenever you think of climate action? Is it planting
more trees or burning less fuel? Schools and academia teach us about climate
change and the environment. But if you don't take any activities from your
knowledge, none of those schooling will function. The heat will continue to
climb, the weather will continue to shift, and more floods will occur. But you
can actually take some steps from wherever you are. Take a tiny action and
keep taking it. Trying to take tiny steps is so much better than aiming high and
changing nothing.
My friend Rifa wanted to shed 5 kg of weight. She googles up her local gym and
joins it. She didn't see any major improvements straight after entering the gym.
But after a month she fulfilled her objective of dropping 5 kg of weight. Now
how do you believe her adventure started? Is it by attending the gym or
modifying her food habits? It started from that simple click on that link from
that search bar which led her on. Small steps progressively create confidence
and capability. They allow us to modifications while establishing a firm basis for
success. Nature also accomplishes a lot of spectacular things with little stars.
For example, just a trace of pollen can fertilize the seed of a redwood plant.
Which later develops into the ground becomes a sapling and finally grows up
into a 100 meter or higher tree. Similarly, tiny actions can create a ripple effect
which leads to big change. Nature tells us it's feasible. When you establish a
goal and it takes a long time to reach it, boredom sets in. It's easy to become
discouraged before we even begin. However, if we take little and easy steps, we
will find that we have reached our goal before we realize it.

Climate change is regarded as the major worldwide health threat of the 21st
Century. The CO2 concentration in the air has drastically increased from 280
ppm to 480 ppm over 150 years. As a consequence, the global temperature has
increased by 1.5⁰c. Humanity is facing tremendous threat from climate change.
It undermines basic necessities for health. The World Health Agency
anticipates that children and youth will experience more than 80% of the
illness injuries and death linked to climate change.
Floods, droughts, and heat waves that happen due to climate change have
significant effects on agricultural productivity as they inhibit photosynthesis in
plants and create stress on animals resulting in low production.
Agriculture is both a victim and offender of global climate change as 20-25% of
GHGs are emitted through agricultural operations. Apart from CO2,
considerable volumes of methane and nitrous oxide are emitted by agriculture
which represent more potent greenhouse gases than CO2. Methane is created
by rice paddy fields, livestock, and organic waste in landfills.

That's why climate activists are preparing marches and other actions over the
coming weeks to raise attention to the mounting concerns posed by climate
change.
In Germany, little villages like Wildpoldsried have embraced renewable energy,
installing solar panels on rooftops and methane digesters, making them
energy-independent and even producing surplus energy for profit. Reducing
carbon footprints and using renewable energy are some of the approaches to
deal with climate change. However, these enormous steps could be a bit

overwhelming for a newbie. You can start by adopting minor changes by using
fewer plastics or walking to your destination instead of driving.
In 2007, Australia started the "One Million Women" project. This encourages
women to make tiny changes in their daily lives to help reduce carbon
emissions. By 2017, the project had exceeded its aim.
Now you may wonder if such little efforts have any big influence. A single tree
saves 167 kg of CO2 per year. Let's say that only 1% of the world's population
will plant one tree per person. There will be around 80000000 trees.
Going entirely eco-friendly in today's culture might be pricey and scary.
However, we can start with little steps from our surroundings. Starting with less
can be a wise start. Whether it's taking shorter showers, avoiding single-use
plastic, or biking to work. Using conventional toothbrushes? Over 23 billion
toothbrushes are wasted each year. Let's trade it for wooden toothbrushes.
They're also cheaper. Does your neighborhood shop only offer plastic bags? Why
1
not bring your own bag? Some shops even provide discounts if you bring your
2 3
own bag. If the store doesn't offer reusable cups bring your own mug! Looking
for new clothes? Americans toss away approximately 13 million tons of apparel
each year. Let's try thrifting. It's currently popular and you may find clothes at a
reduced price. Need to buy new furniture? You can always opt for second
hands! Thrifting and buying second hands cuts carbon emissions up to 36%
You can also join different communities. In many metropolitan locations,
community gardens are cropping up as a way to boost local food production,
cut food miles, and develop green spaces in cities. These gardens not only
supply fresh vegetables but also help with carbon sequestration and
biodiversity. Incredible Edible is a community-led effort in the tiny town of
Todmorden, England, focused on boosting food self-sufficiency and fostering
community resilience. Volunteers grow edible plants and herbs in public

locations throughout the municipality, including parks, schools, and even

outside police stations.
Changes in food and dietary choices will help to minimize GHG emissions. For
example, currently, 10-30 kg of plant proteins are required to generate 1
kilogram of beef. Increasingly transitioning away from animals to other protein
sources would give considerable benefits. In the short term, reduced demand
for soya-based animal feed would have considerable benefits through
decreased land conversion. In the mid to long run, adopting plant-based diets
remains an efficient alternative.
Now the most important part is to keep sticking. While this is simple it's not
easy. You might get disappointed because while you are eating with a paper
straw to help the climate change another person is traveling from one place to
another place with their private jet. In one hour, a single private jet can emit two
tonnes of CO2. While you are trying to use eco bags another person might be
using tons of plastic bags just because they are cheaper. You taking a step is
what makes you better than them. From the simple act of refusing a plastic
straw to the mindful separation of recyclables, each action sparks a ripple
effect of awareness, inspiring others to join in the symphony of sustainability.
Crows help reduce pests and insects and eat up dead animals and garbage.
Bees pollinate our plants. Squirrels play a vital part in seed dissemination by
caching and forgetting seeds. Even these small creatures maintain the
ecosystem balanced with their frequent actions. If their modest actions aid the
environment then yours count too. But if you don't then this small animal's life
will also be in danger. Spread awareness for them. Every conversation counts.
By taking small steps today, we pave the way for a more sustainable and
resilient tomorrow in the face of climate change's mounting challenges.

Time for my words to have ended but it's time for you to take action. Be kind to
yourself. Think of that small first step you can take. Then take it.
