Module 23: Socio-Emotional Development of the
Intermediate Schoolers

ACTIVITY
When you were in Grade 4,5 or 6. Recall a significant event that happened to you. Write a very
brief story of what happened.
- When I was in Grade 5, a significant event happened to me. One day, during our free
time, our class had organized a friendly soccer match. I was excited because I loved
playing soccer. The game started off well, and I was playing as a midfielder. I dribbled
the ball past a couple of opponents and made some accurate passes to my teammates. As
the game progressed, I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins. In the
second half, with the score tied, I saw an opportunity to make a decisive move. I
intercepted a pass from the opposing team and quickly sprinted towards their goal.
Dodging defenders left and right, I managed to get a clear shot at the goal. I kicked the
ball with all my might, and it soared through the air, heading straight for the net. Time
seemed to slow down as I watched the ball curve perfectly into the top corner of the goal.
The cheers and applause from my teammates filled the air as we took the lead. I felt a
rush of joy and accomplishment like never before. That goal turned out to be the winning
one. It was a moment of pure happiness and triumph that I'll never forget. That day, I
realized the power of determination and teamwork, and it left a lasting impression on me.
ANALYSIS

1. Why was this event so significant?
- This event was significant because it was a personal achievement that brought me a sense
of pride and accomplishment. Scoring the winning goal in a soccer match gave me a
boost of self-confidence and showed me the positive outcomes of hard work and
determination.
2. What do you think were the factors that contributed to make you react or feel that way?
- Several factors contributed to my reaction and feelings during this event. Firstly, my
passion for soccer and love for the game fueled my excitement and motivation to perform
well. Secondly, the support and encouragement from my teammates, who celebrated my
success, created a positive and uplifting atmosphere. Lastly, the adrenaline rush from the
intense competition and the thrill of executing a skillful play added to my emotional
response.
3. How do you think this event has affected you socially and emotionally?
- Socially, this event helped strengthen my bond with my teammates. Sharing in the joy of
victory and being celebrated by them created a sense of camaraderie and belonging
within the team. Emotionally, it boosted my self-esteem and belief in my abilities. It
taught me that hard work and perseverance can lead to success, fostering a positive
mindset and a willingness to take on challenges in the future.
4. Thinking about it now, do you think you could have acted or felt differently?
- Looking back, I don't think I would have acted or felt differently during that moment.
The elation and excitement I experienced were natural responses to the situation.
However, if the outcome had been different and we had lost the game, it's possible that I
might have felt disappointed or frustrated. In such a scenario, it would have been
important for me to reflect on the experience, learn from it, and focus on the process
rather than just the outcome.
APPLICATION
A. Study the illustration on the left. It shows some of the factors that may result in some
degree of emotional stress to intermediate school-age children. What can you say to kids
who may be experiencing these things? Write a letter to them.
Dear kids,
I know that growing up and going to school can be tough sometimes. There are a lot of
things that can make us feel stressed and overwhelmed. But I want you to know that you're
not alone, and there are things you can do to feel better. If you're feeling anxious or worried
about schoolwork, remember that it's okay to ask for help. Talk to your teacher or a trusted
adult, and they can give you the support and guidance you need to succeed. If you're feeling
left out or bullied by other kids, remember that it's not your fault. You are special and unique,
and you deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. Talk to a teacher or counselor, or
even a friend or family member, about how you're feeling. They can help you work through
your emotions and find solutions to the situation. Remember, you are not alone, and there are
people who care about you. Taking care of your emotional well-being is just as important as
taking care of your physical health. Don't be afraid to reach out for help when you need it.

cope with challenges they may face in their personal and academic lives.

death and may have difficulty coping with the loss of a loved one. They may experience a

changes in behavior, such as difficulty sleeping, changes in appetite, or withdrawing from
social interactions. It is important for adults to provide children with honest and age-
appropriate information about death, offer emotional support, and encourage children to
express their feelings and seek help when needed.
