Coastal Plain
 There is an extension of narrow
coastal plains on both the sides
(eastern and western sides) of the
peninsular plateau. In the west this
plain is narrow and truncated.
Mahanadi Whereas in the east it is broad and
Godavari plain.

 It extends from the Arabian Sea in the west to the Bay of Bengal in the east.
 For the convenience of study, the relief of the plateau of peninsular India is divided
into two parts –
I. West Coastal Plain (width – 10 to 80 km.)
II. Eastern Coastal Plain (width – 100 to 350 km.)
 Many rivers flow from the plateau of peninsular India. Some of them drain into the Bay
of Bengal, while some drain their water into the Arabian Sea. These rivers cut the
plateau of peninsular India and deposited the soil and sand particles towards the sea,
due to this alluvial deposit, the western coastal plain and eastern coastal plain have
been formed.

Western Coastal Plain
 The Western Coastal Plain is a narrow plain
between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.
 Expansion :- The expansion of this plain is
from the state of Gujarat to Kanyakumari.

 The greatest width of the western coastal plain is

 The western edge of the Western Ghats is a ledge, that is, its slope is very steep. Due
to the steep slope, the rivers flowing on the Western Ghats, which flow towards the
west, are very fast. These rivers form estuaries or estuaries at their outfalls.
 The Narmada and Tapti rivers in Gujarat and the
Sharavati in Karnataka and the Mandavi and
Zuari rivers in Goa form an estuary. Similarly in
Kerala the Bharathapuzha and Periyar rivers

East Coast Plain

 The Eastern Coastal Plain is situated between the Eastern Ghats and the Eastern Coast.

 Formation: - This plain has been formed by the formation


of river deltas, in other words, the plains of the east coast
have been formed due to alluvial deposits of the rivers. Swarnarekha River
 Expansion :- The expansion of this plain extends Mahanadi
from the Subarnarekha river to Kanyakumari Godavari
located on the border of Odisha and West Bengal.
 In size, it is smaller than the plains of North India
and larger than the plains of the Western Ghats. Krishna
 The eastern coastal plain is wider and more prominent
than the western coastal plain. Its average width is Kaveri

 Tamil Nadu Plains :- About 675 km from Pulicat Lake to Kanyakumari. Spread
over a long area.
 Rivers bring fertile soil with them every year in alluvial deposits, that is why the
Eastern Ghats plain is extremely fertile.
 Especially the eastern coastal plain region is suitable for paddy cultivation.
 Paddy is cultivated in sufficient quantity in the valleys of the Kaveri and
other rivers on the Coromandel Coast.
 The maximum width of the Eastern Coastal Plain is in the state of Tamil Nadu.
 Pulicat Lake is a lake located on the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
 Sriharikota Island is situated in the middle of
Pulicat Lake.
 The Satish Dhawan Space Center is
located on Sriharikota Island in Pulicat
Lake.

 There are also some lagoon lakes on the eastern coastal plain. Like
– Chilka Lake in Orissa and Pulicat Lake in Andhra Pradesh.
 The deltas of many major rivers of India are formed in this plain.
These rivers are respectively – Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and
Kaveri etc.
