Cleaning the Seas with Drones
If you have (1) to a beach in the last few years you will probably (2) noticed that the
amount of rubbish seems to be increasing. In fact, the problem of sea pollution (3) been getting
worse for many years. Over 80% of the rubbish in the sea is plastic and over 8.8 million tons of plastic waste
are added to the world’s oceans each year.
Man has created this problem, but now man may (4) come up with a solution. Drones are now
(5) used to clean up the seas. A marine drone is a machine which moves though the water
collecting rubbish in a net. How (6) it stop fish and other creatures from entering? The drone
makes a sound which sea creatures (7) not like. It operates using batteries which allow it to
move through the oceans for up to two weeks. When its batteries are low the drone returns to land, where the
rubbish is collected. Where does the rubbish go? The plastic (8) separated from the other
rubbish and can then (9) sold back to plastic manufacturers and recycled.
Unfortunately, every ten years there (10) twice as much rubbish in the oceans, so the problem is
not going to go away. What can we do? The best solution is simple. We should try to stop putting our rubbish
in the seas.
