Q. Explain Etymological or derivative meaning of Education? Ans:- Etymologically, the word “Education” is derived from four Latin words namely “Educare, Educere, Educatum and Educo”. i. Educare:- ‘Educare’ means to bring up , to nourish and to raise. So the meaning of the word education is to bringup children physically & mentally. ii. E re:- ‘Educere’ means to leadout, to drawout or to bring fourth innate powers. iii. Educatum:- ‘Educatum’ means to teach or to train. iv. Educo:- Educo is the combination from E & duco-“E” means out of and “duco” means to leadout the internal powers of man. Thus, Education is the drawing out of the innate capacities of the individual to develop his personality to the full extent by teaching or training. Meaning And Concept Of Education Q:- Definitions of education given by various Educationists? Ans:- 1. M.K Gandhi:- “By education I mean an all-round drawing out of the best in child and man-body mind and spirit”. 2. Dr. Zakir Hussain:- “Education is the process of the individual mind getting to its fullest possible development to realize absolute moral and intellectual value” 3. Dr Allama Iqbal:- Education means development of Khudi- individuality development of creativity, social, cultural and moral development of the learner” 4. J.H_ Pestalozzi:- “ Education is a natural, harmonious and progressive development of man’s innate powers” 5. Redden:- “Education is the deliberate and systematic influence, exerted by the mature person upon the immature through instruction, discipline and harmonious development of physical, intellectual aesthetic, social and spiritual powers of the human being according to the individual and social needs and directed towards the union of the educand with his creator as the final end”. r haracteristics of ion: The nature / characteristics of education are as follows: 1. Education is a continuous and lifelong process. 2. Education is planned and purposive. 3. Education is balanced development i.e, Education is concerned with the development of all faculties of the child. 4. Education is tri-polar i.e, Education involves the teacher, the taught and the environment or the subject matter. 5. Education is psychological as well as social i.e, the endowments or the capacities of the child, his needs, interests etc. must be interpreted and developed in a social setting. 6. Education is growth i.e, education modifies the behaviour of the child. 7. Education is both a science as well as an art. Q: Explain the narrow and broader meaning of education? Ans:- In order to understand the concept of education, educational thinkers have interpreted and classified the meaning of education into two main categories namely Narrow and Broader meaning of education. 1. Narrow meaning of Education:- In its narrow sense, school instruction is called education. It usually implies imparting information, giving instructions, schooling, training, making people literate, teaching or preparing for a trade. It starts when the child enters in educational institution and ends when he completes his studies or leaves the educational institution. The success of education of the individual is evaluated in terms of pass in the examination. There are deliberate, purposeful and planned efforts on the part of the teacher to impart knowledge. A teacher is mature person who presents and imparts the experience of the whole race. 2. Broader / wider meaning of education: Education in the broader sense is considered a lifelong process. It begins with the birth and continues till death of an individual. In other words it is the process of development from infancy to maturity, from womb to grave. According to Dumvile, “Educationin its widest sense includes all the influences which act upon an individual during his passage from the cradle to the grave”. Education includes all the knowledge and experiences gained through any agency of education whether formal or informal, like the family, the neighborhood, school, the church, the radio, the TV, and internet, the tour and travel, the market, the Cinema or any formal or informal agency. Thus education becomes the sum total of all positive and productive experiences that an individual receives either in the school or outside the school. Mark Hopkins opined, “Education in its widest sense includes everything that exerts a formative influence”. Thus, in the wider sense education is life and life is education. It is really life that educates. Edward Thring elaborated this point and _ said, “Education is the transmission of life by the living to the living”. Q:- Explain the need and importance of Education? Ans:- The need and importance of education may be summed up as- 1. An__Essential_ Human __virtue:- Education is an essential human virtue. Man becomes man through education. He is what education makes him. It has been rightly said that without education, man is splended slave, a reasoning savage. 2. A necessity for society:- Education is necessary for society. Education orients and designs man for society. Education brings into focus the social aspect of man. Education signifies mans supreme position in society. 3. Basis of good life:- Education is an essential basis of good life. A man becomes a human being in the real sense when he is transformed from primarily an animal being into human being. 4. Modification __ of __ behaviour:- Education helps in the modification of human behaviour to act rationally instead of impulsively. The ultimate goal of education is to bring about desirable change in behaviour which enable people to live more effectively. 5. Economi velopmen: mn ional ‘ ional understanding:- The economic development of a country is determined by its human resource development which is influenced by the quality of education available to them. Education plays a vital role in Economic development, which can be achieved through world peace, freedom, justice, safety for all etc. Education strengthens _ national integration and fosters international understanding which are essential for the progress of a nation. In short, education is an essential concomitant of all human societies, “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul” says Addison. (™
