Q: Explain the narrow and broader
meaning of education?
Ans:- In order to understand the concept
of education, educational thinkers have
interpreted and classified the meaning of
education into two main categories
namely Narrow and Broader meaning of
education.1. Narrow meaning of Education:- In
its narrow sense, school instruction is
called education. It usually implies
imparting information, giving
instructions, schooling, training,
making people literate, teaching or
preparing for a trade. It starts when the
child enters in educational institution
and ends when he completes his
studies or leaves the educational
institution. The success ofeducation of the individual is
evaluated in terms of pass in the
examination. There are deliberate,
purposeful and planned efforts on the
part of the teacher to impart
knowledge. A teacher is mature person
who presents and imparts the
experience of the whole race.2. Broader / wider meaning of
education: Education in the broader
sense is considered a lifelong process.
It begins with the birth and continues
till death of an individual. In other
words it is the process of development
from infancy to maturity, from womb
to grave. According to Dumvile,
“Educationin its widest sense includes
all the influences which act upon an
individual during his passage from the
cradle to the grave”. Education
includes all the knowledge and
experiences gained through anyagency of education whether formal or
informal, like the family, the
neighborhood, school, the church, the
radio, the TV, and internet, the tour
and travel, the market, the Cinema or
any formal or informal agency. Thus
education becomes the sum total of all
positive and productive experiences
that an individual receives either in the
school or outside the school. Mark
Hopkins opined, “Education in its
widest sense includes everything that
exerts a formative influence”.Thus, in the wider sense education
is life and life is education. It is really
life that educates. Edward Thring
elaborated this point and _ said,
“Education is the transmission of life
by the living to the living”.
