1. PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER ASSEMBLY - GENERAL
SUBTASK 35-35-59-870-001-A01
A. Purpose
(1) The portable oxygen cylinder assembly contains high-pressure aviation-grade
oxygen, MIL-PRF-27210, Type 1 compatible, for high altitude breathing or
therapeutic use. (Refer to Fig. 1) for an illustration of a typical portable oxygen
cylinder assembly.
(2) The portable oxygen cylinder assembly must be stored in convenient and
accessible locations when secured in an aircraft.
(3) The number of portable oxygen cylinder assemblies necessary on an aircraft
is determined by the applicable Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR), number of
passengers, and the general flight profile of the aircraft.

2. PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER ASSEMBLY - DESCRIPTION
SUBTASK 35-35-59-870-003-A01
A. General Description
(1) The portable oxygen cylinder assembly is made up of a cylinder, a regulator
assembly, and up to two oxygen masks.
SUBTASK 35-35-59-870-004-A01
B. Cylinder
(1) The cylinder is a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada
(TC) rated pressure vessel that holds oxygen gas at a nominal working pressure of
1800 to 1850 psig (12,4 - 12,8 MPa). The cylinder is made of seamless aluminum
that is wrapped with carbon fiber. Refer to chapter INSPECTION/CHECK for
information on the cylinder service life and the hydrostatic test frequency.
SUBTASK 35-35-59-870-005-A01
C. Oxygen Regulator Assembly
(1) The single inlet regulator assembly lowers inlet pressure from the cylinder to the
outlet assembly. The regulator assembly has an ON/OFF valve, a pressure gauge,
a relief valve, a safety outlet, a charging valve, and an outlet fitting attached. The
807801-01 and 807801-02 regulator assemblies have a plug installed in one port.

3. PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER ASSEMBLY - OPERATION
SUBTASK 35-35-59-870-006-A01
A. Regulator Assembly
(1) The regulator reduces high-pressure oxygen stored in the cylinder to a lower
pressure suitable for use with constant flow-type mask assemblies.
(2) (Refer to Fig. 3) for cross sectioned views of a regulator shown in the closed
position. Turning the selector knob (6) counterclockwise provides a flow of 2
liters per minute. When a flow of 2 liters per minute is indicated in the window, a
mechanical detent is felt. The mechanical detent feature is accomplished using
two springs (10) and nylon balls (11). The selector has two indentations (12) to
capture the nylon balls (11).When the selector knob (6) is turned counterclockwise
until a flow of 4 lpm is indicated in the window, the knob comes to a mechanical
stop, and the flow increases to 4 lpm.
(3) When the ON/OFF handle (1) is turned to the ON position and the selector knob
(6) is set to a flow setting, the valve stem (2) and valve head assembly (3) move off
of the seat, allowing oxygen to enter the high pressure valve of the regulator.
(4) As pressure builds beneath the piston assembly (4) the force begins to compress
the regulator spring (5) allowing the piston assembly (4) to move up. The bias
spring (7) moves up with the piston assembly (4) to regulate the flow of gas through
orifices in the selector plate (9). Low pressure oxygen gas is now available at the
low pressure outlet fitting (8) of the regulator. When the knob is moved further
counterclockwise to the mechanical stop, the selector plate (9) turns to a new
position. The new position changes the orifice in the flow path and also changes
the flow rate out of the outlet fitting (8). To close the valve, the ON/OFF handle (1)
is turned clockwise (finger tight). This moves the valve stem (2) and valve head
assembly (3) against the surface of the seat and stops the flow of oxygen.

TASK 35-35-59-000-801-A01
1. PORTABLE OXYGEN CYLINDER ASSEMBLY - DISASSEMBLY
A. General
NOTE : Refer to chapter TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION to find the necessary level
of disassembly. This will give the condition of the equipment and the most
possible cause of the malfunction.
NOTE : Use the IPL to find the part number before you disassemble the equipment.
Refer to the "Effect Code" column (on the Illustrated Parts List) for the parts
applicable to the part number of the equipment that you disassemble. Ignore
the instructions about the parts that are not contained in the equipment which
you disassemble.
NOTE : All item numbers shown in parenthesis ( ) are the same item numbers used in
the IPL.
NOTE : Discard all packings, o-rings and gaskets and replace with new parts.
NOTE : Washer (3-255) is added to the approved configuration for the regulator and
valve assembly. The washer (3-255) closes a gap between the selector knob
and the top cover that could cause the O-Ring (3-380) to be unseated. It is rec-
ommended that washer (3-255) be added to the regulator and valve assembly
during any maintenance on the unit.
(1) Reason for the Job
(a) This section gives step-by-step instructions for a complete disassembly
of a component in a logical sequence and to access any unserviceable
sub-assembly and parts.

(c) Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) give information about chemical makeup
and properties of materials that are possibly dangerous to your health and
safety. Refer to the MSDS for storage, disposal, and safety information.

D. POCA Charging Procedure
Information on the hydrostatic testing period is provided in the CHECK section of this
manual. If the cylinder is not in compliance, it must be tested before refilling.
(1) POCA Charging Setup
(a) Remove the inlet plug (3-170) from the crew outlet port.
(b) Attach vacuum line to the crew outlet port. In order to vacuum the POCA, the
ON/OFF knob (3-90) must be set in the open (full counter-clockwise) position.
(c) Install outlet fitting test plug in the regulator outlet.
NOTE : SAE AIR1059 recommends that after a cylinder has been cleaned
and the regulator replaced, the cylinder should be evacuated.
NOTE : It is not required to vacuum cylinder prior to transfilling.
(d) Turn on the vacuum source. Evacuate the cylinder to 27 inches (685.8 mm)
Mercury (13.2 psi (91,5 kPa)) (Requires a minimum of 4 minutes.)
(e) Close the ON/OFF knob (3-90). Turn off the vacuum source.
(f) Remove the filler cap (3-20).
(g) Attach oxygen refill coupling to the regulator filler valve. In order to charge
the POCA, the ON/OFF knob (3-90) must be set in the closed (full clockwise)
position.
(2) Charge the POCA
(a) For correct charging procedure refer to Reference Documents
– CGA S-1.1 (Pressure Relief Device Standards Part 1 - Cylinders for
Compressed Gases)
– CGA P-15 (Transfilling of Industrial and Medical Nonflammable Compressed
Gas Cylinders)
– SAE AIR1059 (Transfilling and Maintenance of Oxygen Cylinders)
(b) Refer to SAE AIR1059 or CGA P-2.5 for correct stabilized cylinder pressures
at ambient temperatures.
(3) Disconnect the POCA
