Enzyme Activity

Prior Knowledge Questions (Do these BEFORE using the Gizmo.)

1. Suppose you added a spoonful of sugar to hot water and another to ice-cold water.
Which type of water will cause the sugar to dissolve more quickly? ___The sugar will
dissolve quicker in the warm watr_____________

2. Suppose you held a lighted match to a solid hunk of wood and another match to a pile of
wood shavings. Which form of wood will catch fire more easily? ______wood shaving
would catch fire more easily____________

Gizmo Warm-up
An enzyme is a protein that acts as a catalyst for metabolism. A
catalyst speeds a chemical reaction by reducing the amount of
energy required to convert reactants into products. The enzymes
are not changed by the reaction and can be reused over and
over again. The Enzyme Activity Gizmo allows you to experiment
with several factors that affect the rate at which enzymes catalyze
a reaction.

You will need blue, green, and orange markers or colored

pencils for the first part of this activity.

1. Look at the key at the bottom of the SIMULATION pane. In the space below, draw the two
reactants and two products of this chemical reaction. Use colored pencils for your drawing.

Reactants: Products:

2. Select the ANIMATION tab. Select WITH CATALYST and observe. What do you
observe when the catalyst contacts the reactants? ____The orange molecule
switched_______________________

3. Why do you think the shape of a catalyst is important? _______________the shape

determines the acceleration ___________

is at a Maximum rate.

Question: How does concentration of an enzyme affect the rate of a chemical reaction?

1. Predict: How do you think enzyme concentration will affect the rate of a chemical
reaction? ______A higher concentration of enzymes will speed up the rate of the
reaction________________________________________________________

2. Gather Data: On the CONTROLS pane, set the Catalyst Concentration to 0.05 mol/L.
Start the gizmo. Allow it to run for 5 min. the press pause. Record the amount of product
produced. Repeat for three trials at each concentration in the data table. Calculate the
means.

2 26 36 36
3 20 34 40
mean 20.6 34.0 36.0

3. Analyze: What do your results indicate concerning enzyme concentration and products
produced? __When the enzyme concentration is on 0.05 it averages 20.6 or product
produced but when its at 0.20 it averages 36 of product produced

4. Draw Conclusions: How does the concentration of an enzyme affect the rate of a
chemical reaction? ____Increasing enzyme concentration will speed up the rate of the
reaction______________________________________________________
