working
characteristics

PROMARINE®-640 contains no asbestos or other mineral fibres,

therefore no special precautions are necessary when working with the
panels. PROMARINE®-640 composite panels can be processed simply
by using normal joinery tools when sawing, planing, drilling etc. When
using power equipment, such as electric saws, dust extraction should
be used to reduce the airborne nuisance dust generated.
When making cut-outs in laminated PROMARINE®-640 composite
panels it is important to radius the corners to prevent laminate splitting.
PROMARINE®-640 is suitable for lamination of high pressure laminates
using a variety of adhesives. Both cold and hot press methods of
lamination can be employed.
The type of glue to be used when bonding laminates to PROMARINE®-
640 will be determined by the adhesive specified in the laminate
manufacturer’s certificate of approval from the appropriate
classification body. The major marine laminate manufacturers hold
approval certificates where various glues have been used in the flame-
spread tests, e.g. Resorcinol Formaldehyde, Polyurethane, PVAc,
Epoxy etc. Please consult the laminate manufacturer, or Promat
Technical Department, if in doubt.
Pre-bonded PROMARINE®-640 composite panels should not be stored
or used in conditions where the relative humidity (RH) falls below 35%,
or above 85%, and where the maximum temperature is above 35O.

IMPORTANT:
When using machine power tools to cut boards, care should be
taken to reduce the effects of dust. Use of dust extraction is highly
recommended, and use of an appropriate dust mask or respiration
equipment in accordance with the requirements of local standards
and regulations is required. The legal requirements for
occupational exposure limits for total and respirable dust must be
adhered to.
When total dust concentration is higher than occupational
exposure limits (refer to local regulations), individual respiratory
protective equipment is obligatory.
Work in a well ventilated area. Use tools with appropriate dust
exhaust equipment. Collect dust with a vacuum cleaner or soak
with water before sweeping up.
For more information please refer to the appropriate Material
Safety Data Sheet; which is available from your local Promat office.

PROMARINE ® 21

furniture range

The PROMARINE® furniture range of non-combustible ship furniture has

been developed to meet the requirements of the latest SOLAS
Fire Regulations for passenger carrying vessels. This allows
accommodation areas containing furniture and furnishings of restricted
fire risk to be downgraded from ‘Moderate Fire Risk’ (category 7) to
‘Minor Fire Risk’ (Category 6).
This has the advantage of reducing the level of fire protection required
between the accommodation areas and their surroundings*.
*Refer to SOLAS (Consolidated Edition, 2001) - Part 1, Chapter II-2,
Regulations 3 and 9.

The PROMARINE® furniture range consists of:

z Pre-manufactured items from stock.
z Customised production to suit original designs.

The pre-manufactured furniture

consists of an attractive range of
bed frames, wardrobes, kneehole
desks and bedside cabinets, all
finished in a matching hardwearing
woodgrain laminate. These are
available ‘off the shelf’ for turnkey
projects. Drawings detailing the
dimensions of each item are
readily available.
For those customers looking for
individuality, our team of
experienced professionals can
provide assistance and advice
from the design stage through to
manufacture by our craftsmen and
finally, the assembly on board the
vessel.

fire protection 23

case study

It is reassuring to know that PROMARINE®-640 boards perform not only

in fire test laboratories, but also on ships where a major fire has
occurred.
PROMARINE®-640 boards provide a B15 rating when fire tested to
SOLAS and IMO resolution A.754 (18). It gives ship designers and
owners who have used or specified PROMARINE®-640 boards added
confidence knowing that the panels lasted 6 times longer than the fire
integrity requirements for which they were designed/installed.

B15 fire requirements Safety factor 1
24 Jul 2005
Fire integrity only: 30 minutes 180 minutes 6 times!
Fire insulation: 15 minutes
PROMARINE®-640 boards were used for ‘Postformed’ column
protection.
The fire on the ‘New Build’, 120 metre long, 1000 passenger ferry raged
for 3 hours and caused extensive damage to the car deck, bridge and
accommodation areas.
Partitions consisted of only a single layer of 19mm thick PROMARINE®
board with laminate/wallpaper yet were able to retain their fire integrity
for the duration of a fully developed fire which burned for 3 hours.
As shown on photographs to the right and on the following page, 2
PROMARINE®-640 boards maintained fire integrity and provided proof
of the exceptional fire resistance of the boards:
1. Fire test of PROMARINE® boards at 30 minutes
2. Postformed external corner of saloon area prior to fire
3. Play room area prior to fire

SYSTEMGLAS ®
Fire Rated Glass Partitions & Doors
SYSTEMGLAS® is a fire rated full height frameless glass partition and
door system for marine and offshore accommodation use.
Ideally suited for duty-free areas, restaurants, bars, or general viewing
areas, SYSTEMGLAS® is available clear, tinted, or etched.
To provide full transparency, any vertical and/or horizontal joints
between the glass are filled with translucent fire rated PROMASEAL®
Silicone Sealant.
The perimeter framework of the partition utilises slender 50mm x 20mm
steel hollow sections which can be powder coated to match the
surroundings.
SYSTEMGLAS® doors can be supplied as either single or double leaf
openings, with closers surface or floor mounted. Frames are of steel
hollow section and can be powder coated to match the partition
framework.

fire stopping 31

products
Range of Fire Stopping Systems
PROMASEAL® is a comprehensive range of fire stopping products designed to be cost effective, simple to install
and offering outstanding fire performance.

PROMASTOP® UniCollar®
PROMASTOP® UniCollar® is a unique, patented method of protecting plastic pipes that pass through fire rated
bulkheads and ceilings. This is achieved by an intumescent reaction that prevents the passage of fire and smoke
through openings that form if plastic pipes are exposed to fire, maintaining the fire integrity. This system is
supplied in a continuous strip and is simply cut to length to suit required pipe diameter.

PROMASEAL® Sealant
PROMASEAL® Sealant can be supplied in either acrylic, intumescent or silicone forms, and is used to seal gaps
and small holes around fire rated bulkheads and ceilings.

PROMASEAL® Pillows
PROMASEAL® Pillows are used to maintain the integrity of fire rated bulkheads and ceilings, when services are
subject to change and alteration, i.e. during vessel refit.

PROMASEAL® Fire Curtain

PROMASEAL® Fire Curtain is used to form vertical barriers in the void space between the ceiling and underdeck
in accommodation areas to prevent the passage of fire, and perhaps more importantly, stop the spread of smoke
reaching adjacent areas.
PROMASEAL® Fire Curtain is a
white, plain weave fabric, woven
from glass fibre yarns and post
treated with silicone based
coatings, and is available in 25m x
1.55m rolls.
