The Soft Beret

Materials
1 skein of Bernat Softee Baby yarn (color – Soft Peach) Light 3 – 100% Acrylic
Crochet hook size H8/5.00 mm
Yarn needle
Scissors
Stitch marker

Stitches/Abbreviations
ch(s) = chain(s)
st(s) = stitch(es)
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together
rep = repeat [ ] work directions in brackets the number of times specified

Notes:
Adjustable ring = Wrap yarn into a ring ensuring that the tail falls behind the working yarn. Grip ring and
tail between middle finger and thumb. Insert hook through center of ring, yarn over (with working yarn)
and draw up a loop. Work stitches of the first round in the ring. After the first round of stitches are
worked, pull gently on tail to tighten ring.
How to single crochet 2 stitches together (sc2tog) = draw up a loop in each of next 2 stitches. Yarn over
hook and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Make sure to put the stitch marker in first stitch of each round.

Instructions: Note: Increase Rounds


Round 1: Make an adjustable ring, ch 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch), work 6 sc in the ring (mark first stitch
with stitch marker) do not join. Total of 6 sts.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. Total of 12 sts.
Round 3: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times. Total
18 sts.
Round 4: [1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 24 sts.
Round 5: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 30 sts.
Round 6: 1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 2 sts. Total 36 sts.
Round 7: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 5 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 42 sts.
Round 8: 1 sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 3 sts. Total 48 sts.
Round 9: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 7 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 54 sts.
Round 10: 1 sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 4 sts. Total 60 sts.
Round 11: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 9 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 66 sts.
Round 12: 1 sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 5 sts. Total 72 sts.
Round 13: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 11 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 78 sts.
Round 14: 1 sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 12 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 6 sts. Total 84 sts.
Round 15: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 13 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 90 sts.
Round 16: 1 sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 7 sts. Total 96 sts.
Round 17: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 15 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 102 sts.
Round 18: 1 sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st, [1 sc in next 16 sts, 2 sc in next st] REP – work direction in the
brackets around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 8 sts. Total 108 sts.
Round 19: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 17 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times.
Total 114 sts.
Note: If you would like the beret more slouchy, add more rounds here. Add just two more rounds for a
little more slouch, add four or more for super slouch.
Rounds 20 - 23: 1 sc in each st around. Total 114 sts.
Note: Decrease Rounds
Round 24: [Sc2tog, 1 sc in next 17 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times. Total
108 sts.
Round 25: 1 sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog, [1 sc in next 16 sts, sc2tog] REP – work direction in the brackets
around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 8 sts. Total 102 sts.
Round 26: [Sc2tog, 1 sc in next 15 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times. Total
96 sts.
Round 27: 1 sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog, [1 sc in next 14 sts, sc2tog] REP – work direction in the brackets
around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 7 sts. Total 90 sts.
Round 28: [Sc2tog, 1 sc in next 13 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times. Total
84 sts.
Round 29: 1 sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog, [1 sc in next 12 sts, sc2tog] REP – work direction in the brackets
around 4 more times, 1 sc in last 6 sts. Total 78 sts.
Round 30: [Sc2tog, 1 sc in next 11 sts] REP – work direction in the brackets around 5 more times. Total
72 sts.
Note:
For the last round, round 36 – slip stitch in the last 3 stitches. (This will help with the ending point less
obvious).
Rounds 31 - 36: 1 sc in each st around. Total 72 sts.
Fasten off.
Weave in the ends.
