Information about surfing

 The first surfing references were found in Polynesia. Polynesians brought

surfing to Hawaii and the sport received a lot of attention from
Hawaiians. It was not only seen as a sport but also as an important part
of the religion. Everybody surfed - men, women, children, kings - but
there was a strict rule system that regulated who could surf on which
spot.

Surfing relation to the body
 cardiovascular fitness – from paddling
 shoulder and back strength – these muscles will strengthen from the
paddling
 leg and core strength – once you’re standing up on the board, strong legs
and a strong core will keep you up.
 As well as building muscle strength in your upper body and legs, the
cross-training effect of surfing is a brilliant workout for your core, making
it a full body workout.
 Officially classed as a ‘vigorous’ exercise by health experts, surfing is a
great way to burn calories and burns roughly the same amount of
calories as football, rock climbing or a session in the gym. It is also low
impact, so much better for your knees and hip joints than exercises like
running.
Surfing benefits

 IMPROVES MENTAL HEALTH

Surfing requires complete focus and concentration so is a great way to
step away from day-to-day life and wipe away the effects of stress.

 HELPS COORDINATION AND BALANCE

A study of older surfers by Australia’s Southern Cross
University found that long-term recreational surfing appeared to maintain or
improve balance, coordination and control, better than in active older people who
didn’t surf.

 IMPROVES SLEEP
The great thing about surfing is it
doesn’t feel like exercise so you can get
all the benefits of a good workout that
will help you sleep better by just doing
something you enjoy.
The dangers of surfing
 Marine Life
he danger that a shark poses is obvious, but there are other just as
dangerous marine life to keep on the look out for. These include Seals,
Snakes (sea ones, obviously), Urchins, Jellyfish and Stingrays. All can be
potentially life threatening.

 Drowning

There is a very real risk of drowning while surfing.

 Surfboards
Surfboards can be a dangerous piece of sporting equipment. Pointed at
one end, with one or more switchblade like fins ready to slice anything
that gets in their way.
