C. Rules:
Before We enter I’d like to say a few rules before exploring the temple
• If you’re a female and apparently on your period session Please do not go inside
the Temple. Why? Because it’s restricted for period woman to enter a temple
because if you do enter then you’re disrespecting our culture and tradition
• Always wear a sarong and an udeng now if you do not know what an udeng is
an udeng is like a cloth head that’s what udeng basically is and a sarong is a
clothing that you wear to cover your entire lower body part
• please Be respectful, Quiet, kind to others
• You may take photos, but not the innermost sanctums of the temple
• And always say “Om Swastiastu” Why? It’s because when you say Om
Swastiastu it means like greetings in Balinese language and by saying that
you’re respecting our culture and tradition as well
Alright before we enter I’d like to tell you about the Besakih temple geographically and
the architecture of the Temple
D. Besakih Temple geographic:
Now The Besakih Temple is an area of 20 hectares in the village of Rendang
Karangasem Bali. With a land of 20 hectares , 46 large and small group of temples are
occupied in this Besakih Temple complex the small and large Temples are then divided
into 3 parts, the first one is the Penyungsungan Jagat Temple containing 20 Temples
inside of it, 2nd one is the kawitan Temple containg 17 temples, 3rd and final one is the
dadya Temple containing around 9 temples
E. Architecture
Now the Besakih temple is a complex made up of 23 temples that sit in parallel ridges
that lead up to the main spire or the Meru Structure all this is aligned was to lead the
spiritual person upward and closer to the Mount Agung Which is Sacred. Now the main
sanctuary of the complex is the Pura Penataran Agung the symbolic center of the
sanctuary is the lotus throne and padmasana and lotus throne is a flower that is sacred
special to the gods
F. History:
Now the Besakih Temple Has an interesting yet Miraculous story so back in 1963 there
was an eruption that kills approximately around 1700 people in the Rendang
Karangasem Bali. But the lava flows missed by a mere meter from hitting the Besakih
temple and the people inside the Besakih temple faith had been erected and that they
even said that “We Must Protect This Temple At All Costs”. And this shows that the
temple was protected and sacred although the origin of the temple is unclear this temple
was built on the 17th century along with the powerful gelgel dynasty
G. 5 Main Temples
Alright enough of the chit chats Let us explore the 5 temples visitors always went to
visit often
1. Pura Penataran Agung
The largest and also where main ceremonies took place in and here were dedicated
to worship 3 main gods Now if You’re wondering why do Hinduism have so many
gods well you know that there is only 1 god right well that goes the same for
Hinduism except that the god “Ida Shang Hyang Widhi Wasa” seperate itself to
different variations that’s why we’ve got “Bhatara” “Lord” “Deities” “Dewa” And
