Bierzesz udział w działalności lokalnej straży obywatelskiej. Policja zwróciła się do Ciebie z zapytaniem,
które przestępstwa mają najbardziej negatywny wpływ na życie lokalnej społeczności.
Masz do wyboru trzy rodzaje przestępstw.
• Wybierz tę opcję, która będzie, Twoim zdaniem, najbardziej odpowiednia, i uzasadnij swój wybór.
• Wyjaśnij, dlaczego odrzucasz pozostałe propozycje.
I would choose Picture 1 as I think burglary is the crime that most negatively affects my area or any area.
Being the victim of burglary is very distressing, upsetting and frightening. It has a hugely negative affect on
the people it happens to because it’s an invasion of somebody’s entire life. It’s dangerous, too because
sometimes burglars enter while the residents are in the house. Not only that, but burglaries affect everyone in
the neighbourhood because it makes them nervous that their home will be the next target for robbers. It
also makes everyone suspicious of each other. I rejected Picture 2 because even though there is graffiti in my
area, vandalism doesn’t damage somebody’s life the way burglary does. Nobody is ever hurt by graffiti.
Furthermore, some graffiti is quite attractive, when it is of an interesting design and in a designated area. I
rejected Picture 3 because shoplifting is not a crime that affects the community. Admittedly, it is one of the
most common crimes in my area but it only really affects the person who commits the crime
and the business from which they stole. It doesn’t have a direct effect on the emotional or financial
conditions of everyone else in the community.
1 Should teenagers always be given harsh punishments?
I don’t think young criminals should be given harsh punishments because I think lots of teenagers make silly
mistakes and they should be given a second chance so as not to ruin the future. For example, they will need
to get a job and a harsh sentence might ruin their chances because of their police records. It might also
encourage more anti-social behaviour from them. All criminals
should of course be punished in some way but I think it’s better to educate young people so that they learn
the consequences of crime and then give them a chance to prove that they won’t repeat the offence.
2 Should all countries have the same laws and penalties?
I think all countries should have the same laws and penalties. It’s not fair that in one place, you can commit a
crime, pay a fine and then be free a few days later whereas in another place you might be jailed for ten years
for the same crime. That seems ridiculous to me! I’ve heard horrible stories about tourists going to prison in
foreign countries and not being released for years. Ithink governments should work alongside each other to
come up with international laws that apply everywhere. I think this will reduce crime, eventually.
3 Is a policeman work dangerous?
I think it depends on where they work and the duties of their role because there are different types of police
officers. Some police officers work on the streets in very dangerous locations and have to defend themselves
against threatening behaviour and risky situations on a daily basis. They sacrifice their safety so as to protect
others so I think they should be paid a higher salary than a police officer who works in an office or a peaceful
village.
4 Which areas have the highest crime rates?
I think some areas have higher crime rates because they have a high population, high unemployment rates
and a poor economy. I also think that an area’s education system has a lot to do with crime, as well as the
amount of facilities provided for young people. And, of course, where there is a lot of poverty there will
always be a lot of crime because people are in a desperate situation. Having a strong police force would
reduce that, though.
