PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The students are asked the following questions:
1. How many alphabets do we have in English Language?
2. Recite them.
3. Identify the vowel sounds from the alphabet and consonants respectively.
CONTENT: INTRODUCTION TO CONSONANTS
A consonant is a speech sound which is produced with the obstruction of airstream
either at the vocal cords or nasal cavity. The obstruction could be ‘partial’ or
‘total’.
Consonant sounds could be voiced or voiceless. It is voiced when there is vibration
at the vocal cords. It is voiceless when there is no vibration at the vocal cords.
There are 24 consonant sounds in English studies. They are:
1. /b/ as in but, bet, book, board etc.
2. /d/ as in dog, door, dock, dew etc.
3. /f/ as in fan, safe, cough, physical etc
4. /g/ as in God, goat, guitar, gum etc
5. /h/as in house, home, harrow, happy etc.
6. /ʤ/ as in gin, joy, edge, jeep etc.
7. /k/as in kid, kiss, cock, come etc.
8. /Ɩ/ as in look, late, life, follow etc.
9. /m/as in flame, hammer, man, him etc
10. /n/ as in know, night, knight, nose, new etc.
11. /p/ as in power, cap, rope, pipe etc.
12. /r/as in right, run, write, wrong etc.
13. /s/as in science, class, fast, place etc.
14. /ʈ/ as in ten, tap, tomb, fit etc
15. /v/ as in van, vest, revive, adventure etc.
16. /w/ as in one, wine, suite, quit, etc
17. /j/ as in you, yawn, yellow, yes etc
18. /z/ as in zoo, close, rose, president etc.

CONTENT: Expository Writing (The Elements of Writing)
An expository essay is one in which the writer tries to explain how something
works, how something is done or how something is made. Expository essays
demand the ‘how of things. Such essays call for explanation of a process or an
idea. In writing an expository essay, the writer may need to carry out research
before writing. The expository essay is written in the present tense and it is written
in the formal style.
Expository essay explains how something is made or done by following a
process. It reveals the secret of doing things .The aim of expository writing is to
inform, to instruct or bring someone else to one’s point of view.
The following are some topics that are expository:
1. Power Holding Company of Nigeria.
2. Football in Nigeria.
3. How to Prepare my Traditional Dish/How to prepare my local food
4. HIV/ AIDS.
5. How to make tie and dye (campala)
6. How to play my local game (ayo)
The Elements of Writing.
Writing is a creative activity or skill used in any conventional system that
represents the utterances of a language. The elements of writing are the main parts
or sections to an essay.
The elements of writing are:
1. Topic/Title.
2. INTRODUCTION:This is an opening paragraph of an essay. It should briefly
introduce the topic and outline your key ideas to answer the question.
3. THE BODY OF THE ESSAY: This is the longest part of an essay. This is where
you lead the readers through your ideas, elaborating arguments and evidence for
your essay. The body is always divided into paragraphs.
4. CONCLUSION: This is the final paragraph of your essay. A strong conclusion
aim to tie together the essay’s main points. Leave the reader with a strong
impression.

CONTENT: ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE
Voice is the aspect of a verb that suggests whether the subject performs an action is
affected by an action that is performed.
ACTIVE VOICE: This is when the subject performs the action described by the
verb. It is used when the action flows from subject to the object.
(Explanation: Assuming Paul performed a particular action which is expressed by a
verb; it therefore, means that Paul will be regarded as the doer or performer of the
action. In English grammar, Paul will be
referred to as the subject and the verb in that sentence will be in the active voice.
For example, Paul
wrote a letter. Here, “wrote” is in the active voice since the subject of the verb
(Paul) is doing the writing.So, a verb is said to be in the active voice.)
Examples: a)I saw Paul.

c)The driver was driving the car carelessly.

Passive Structure: This is when the sentence is reversed from the object form to
subject form. Examples:
a) Paul was seen by me.
b) Some oranges were been eaten by us.
c) Carelessly, the car was being driven by the driver.
d) Meticulously, the the song was sung by Bola.
e) A goat has been killed by Ade.

PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE CHANGES TO PAST SIMPLE TENSE:
Active: I kick a ball.
Passive: The ball was kicked by me.
Active: He reads a novel.
Passive: A novel was read by him.
Active: Gemma eats the rice.
Passive: The rice was eaten by Gemma.
PAST TENSE CHANGES TO PAST PERFECT TENSE:
Active: My friend gave me a bar of chocolate.
Passive: A bar of chocolate was given to me by my friend .
Active: Reema cleaned the floor.
Passive:The floor was cleaned by Reema.
Active: I had kicked the ball before he arrived.
Passive: The ball had been kicked by me before he arrived.
Active: Misha had cleaned the floor.
Passive: The floor had been cleaned by Misha.
Active: Had they caught the thief?
Passive: Had the thief been caught by them.
