PNEMATOLOGY (Study of the Holy Spirit)

The word 'spirit' is the translation of the Hebrew word 'ruach' and Greek word, "Pneuma Holy Spirit or
Holy Ghost are the names given to the third person of the Holy trinity

The Holy Spirit is certainly visible but not prominent in the Old Testament as He is in the New
Testament. There are several characteristics or ministries of the Holy Spirit that we may observe

1. The Holy Spirit was active in creation, Gen 1:2. He was also the sustainer of Life, hence Gen. 6:3 which
is rightly interpreted, God's Spirit will not always continue to sustain life, and consequently, man is
bound to die (of course referring to man's earthiy mortal life. A synonym for life was "The Spirit of God
in one's nostrils' ef Job. 27:3

2. Active in giving special Gifts. (Study Exodus 35:31 and I Cor. 12 & 13)

3. Active among leaders: A common way the words of the judges were introduced was, "the Spirit of the
Lord came upon..." (Judges 3:10, 6:34, 11:29, 13:25, 14:6, 15:14) David pleads that the Spirit will not
depart from him (Ps. 51:11). David was marked for the Spirit of excellence. Samson was possessed with
the Spirit of exploit.

Johu 3:336

THE HOLY SPIRIT AS A PERSON

The Holy Spirit is not merely a power or force or influence. He is as much a person as either God the
Father or Jesus Christ. It is true that the word 'Spirit' in both Hebrew and Greek means, 'breath' or 'wind'
and also the Bible uses non-personal things as symbols to represent the Holy Spirit such as fire or wind.
He is indeed a person.

By 'person' we do not mean human beings although human beings are person. When we speak of
personality in relation to God we are talking of the essential marks of personality like, thinking, feeling,
choosing, acting and the capacity to make moral choices

Proofs of His Personality

1. Personal Acts: He teaches Jn. 14:26, He speaks Matt. 10:20, He leads, (Matt. 4:1, Rom. 8:14). He
witnesses comforts, forbids, sends, perform miracles, makes intercession. Etc.

2 Personal Qualities and Properties: He possesses Wisdom and Will power, and Love, He knows the mind
of God ef Arts 1:8

3. Jesus spoke of Him as a person (Matt. 12:31 ef Eph 4:30) - Ja. 14:16, 17,26:15:26, 16:7-15 All these,
proofs that the Holy Spirit is a person
