Read the following passage about the history of the media and choose the best answer to each of
the following questions.
If you're a teenager living in a city, you might think you can't do much to change the big world around
you. But you really can help make urban life better for everyone!
Cities often don't have enough plants and trees, which are important not only for clean air but also for
helping city people feel good. You can help by planting trees, starting gardens, or setting up a club at
school that focuses on gardening. This makes the city look nicer and helps everyone stay healthy. Green
areas also provide places for wildlife to live, which helps maintain diversity in the environment.
Another big problem in cities is too much trash. You can help by recycling everything that can be
recycled. If your area doesn't recycle much yet, start a scheme which involves as many people from
your school and neighborhood as possible. Teach your friends why it's good to use less plastic – the web
is full of stories about the harm which plastic does to wildlife – and to reuse things.
Walk, use public transportation, walk, or cycle everywhere, and tell your family and friends to do the
same. This will reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. You can also ask the city council for better
bus services, more subway lines, or more paths for bikes. This makes it easier and cleaner for everyone
to get around.
2
Instead of going to the food hall at a mall or to fast food restaurants run by multinational companies, buy
from small shops and eat in local cafés and restaurants. This helps the local workers and stops pollution
from the huge trucks that bring things from far away. Try not to buy any meat, fish, fruit, or vegetables
which have traveled more than 25 miles to the city, and also encourage friends and family to reduce food
miles.

Read the following passage about people and the environment and choose the best answer to each
of the following questions.
[I] You often hear people say that early humans who hunted wild animals and picked fruit looked after
their environment better than we do today. [II] Clearly, they had a strong interest in doing this, because
they depended on the animals and the fruit being there next year. [III] Scientists believe that humans
followed the animals, which moved to new environments each year, and then picked the fruit which
grew in those new areas. [IV]
When early humans began to live in a single environment all year round, examples show that some
groups understood nature enough to be able to look after them. In some places, they did not plant the
same crop in the same place every year, so the land could recover. In others, they made terraces on the
side of hills to stop the earth being washed away from their crops. In North America, some groups put
wood across rivers which allowed small fish to swim through, leaving the bigger fish for them to catch
and eat. In a similar way, groups which still hunted only killed older animals so that the young ones had
time to produce children and to get fatter.
However, once people moved away from a farming lifestyle, it seems they did lose respect for local
environments in many cases. In the 17th and 18th centuries, European sailors landed on islands
which had never seen humans, so the animals were not frightened of them. Instead of only killing
what they needed for food, the complete population of a species was killed in many cases. This happened
with the dodo bird in Mauritius, for example, and with sea cows in Alaska. It almost happened with
many sea creatures such as the right whale, seals and giant turtles. In the 19th century, white Americans
moved across the continent and, in less than 100 years, they killed almost all of the millions of buffaloes
which had provided food and milk for the native Americans for thousands of years.
Question 25. Where in paragraph 1 does the following sentence best fit?
But if they really looked after their environment, why did they often move to different areas in
different seasons
A. [I] B. [II] C. [III] D. [IV]

A. They often used up all the food in one area, so they had to move to another.
B. They did not move to new areas very often.
C. They hunted in one season then moved to another area to gather fruit in another season.
D. They worked with nature to live in the place with the most food each season.
