PRACTICAL ONE

TITLE: HOUSE KEEPING IN PAINTING


AIM: To demonstrate the need for a clean environment to ensure successful painting
MATERIALS: Duster, Thinner, Broom, Brushes, Water, Buckets, Ladder, Scaffold
PROCEDUE:
1. The environment was cleaned by ensuring that each tool is applied to the correct surface
2. A thinner was used to remove paint stains on floor
3. Saw dust and paper were used as protective sheet spread on the floor to reduce falling
paint staining the floors.
4. The leftover was returned to the store
5. The floor of the workshop was later cleaned
PRECAUTIONS:
1. A face mask was used to protect against dust
2. Proper inspection of ladder and scaffold
3. Equipment/tools used were properly washed and stored
DRAWING:
EXERCISES:
1. Why would you advise your client to paint his house?
 Painting will improve the physical appearance of the house and it will also prevent damages and
reduce some of the maintenance cost.

2. Briefly describe the various paint types that you know.


a. Glossy paints e.g. oil based paint
b. Primers
c. Water based paint e.g. emulsion
d. Textured paints etc.

3. Explain the precautions you would take to protect your during in painting.
a. The proper use of personal protective equipment is the precaution to take into account
b. Proper choice of tools and equipment to use
c. Proper choice of paint and painting technique to use

4. What factors would render the paint operation a failure?


a. Incorrect choice of painting technique and tools
b. Inadequate drying time
c. Inconsistency in coating
d. Poor ventilation

5. Take a look at the workshop and state reasons why painting cannot just commence
immediately.
a. The reason why painting cannot commence is that the workshop paint has no any physical
damage.
b. The paint also has not reached it maintenance period and no sign of failure or poor
workmanship.
PRACTICAL TWO
TITLE: PAINTING OF WALL
AIM: To demonstrate the technique(s) of painting wall and ceiling surface
MATERIALS: Emulsion, Surfaces, Broom, Brushes, Water, Buckets, Ladder, Roller
PROCEDUE:
1. All plaster splashes were removed with scraper to prepare the surfaces
2. Holes, scratches or grooves were all filled.
3. A soft brush was used to remove dust.
4. The work was allowed for 30min to 1hr.
5. Emulsion paint was diluted with 10% additional water and paint was used as a
primer.
6. Later, full-strength emulsion was applied to the surface and allowed to dry for 2hrs
to 3hrs.
7. The final coat of the emulsion was applied and surface was protected until it dries.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. PPE was used inline with the safety of painting surfaces
2. Holes were adequately filled and sanded to give a levelled surface
3. The leftover was well covered and store to prevent drying
DRAWING:
PRACTICAL THREE
TITLE: SURFACE TREATMENT OF WOOD AND PAINTING
AIM: To demonstrate to the students how to prepare and paint wood surfaces.
MATERIALS: Wood planed 300 x 80 x 21, Bitumen (glue and wood dust), Knotty paint,
Wood primer, Glass paper, Wood finishing paint/oil paint, Brushes, Scaffold
PROCEDUE:

1.The wood was rub down in the direction of the grain with a glass paper.
2.All the dust and dirt were cleaned from the surface.
3.The wood was sealed with a primer.
4.To prevent resin leaking knots were sealed with a mixture of shellac and
methylated spirits.
5. Holes and cracks were sealed with a plastic filler paste.
6. The surface was rubbed with glass paper to smooth the filler.
7. The undercoat and glass coat were brushed.
8. After the undercoat dries, with was rubbed again and a second coat of undercoat
was applied.
9. The painted surface was protected until it has dried.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. Hand gloves and goggles were used by students to protect themselves from dust and
chemicals.
2. The instructor ensured the workspace was well-ventilated before painting began.
3. All loose wood dust was removed by sanding and wiping the surface properly.
4. The paint and solvents were kept away from open flames to prevent fire hazards.

resistance, and easy-to-clean glossy finish.
2. Describe the preparation to new wood to receive paint.
a. New wood must be properly sanded, dusted, primed, filled, and finely sanded
before painting to ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish
