School should not force children to learn a foreign language.
To what extent do
you agree with this statement?
Some people argue that a foreign language should not be included in the
curriculum as a compulsory subject. While I believe that it is beneficial for
children to learn a new language, I totally agree that school should not force
them to do so.
On the one hand, it could be detrimental to students if schools force them to
study a foreign language. One reason is that learning another language at school
as a main subject appears to be an obligation for school children rather than a
real interest. Therefore, they are likely to be prone to pressure from academic
standards at school and would not study effectively. Another reason is that
children could be reluctant to learn a foreign language if it is unimportant and
irrelevant to their lives. They should not be forced to study if they will never use
it in the future.
On the other hand, school should encourage children to study a new language.
Firstly, a foreign language could be a means of communication with other
people from different cultures. It is particularly useful when they travel to
another country, they would have opportunities to contact local residents,
understanding about their lives, therefore, making the trip become more
meaningful. Moreover, numerous employers are keen to seek candidates who
are fluent in other languages. Having a good grasp in another language could be
an advantage for children in the future career path. Finally, foreign language
learners could access information from that country. For example, English
learners can enjoy websites which are only available in English only with no
language barrier.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that learning a foreign language brings about
various benefits. Therefore, school should encourage and facilitate but not
compel children to study.
