Yayoi Kusama Themed
Infinity Room Clay Art
Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist who is inspired by polka dots.
She has created many art exhibitions known as Infinity Rooms.
These are rooms where the walls are lined with mirrors. She places
sculptures at different heights within the rooms. People can then
enter the room and stand on small platforms. The mirrors give the
impression that the room never ends and the art keeps going. When
she was growing up, Yayoi’s family grew pumpkins at their plant
nursery. As a child, she drew pumpkins and continued this interest
by putting pumpkins in some of her infinity rooms.
You can create your own infinity room art by following these
instructions.
 You will need:
 • half of a net of a cube template (included)
 • piece of strong cardboard (A3)
 • scissors
 • two colours of paint of your choice
 • paintbrushes (one thick and one thin)
 • pencil
 • masking tape
 • air drying clay
 • clay boards
 • clay tools
 • newspaper
 • aprons

 Instructions:
   1. Put on an apron and place newspaper in the area you are working in to protect
surfaces. Use a clay board when working with the clay to prevent it from
      sticking to the paper.
  2. Decide which fruit or vegetable is going to be in your infinity room. It could
be a pumpkin, like Yayoi Kusama’s artwork, or it could be something different.
  3. Roll the clay into a ball. Then, use the tools and your fingers to shape the clay into your
chosen fruit or vegetable. Make sure the bottom of your model is flat so that it will stay
still on the floor of your infinity room.
  4. Leave your model to dry.
  5. Put the half of a net of a cube template on the cardboard and draw around it. Then,
     cut it out.
  6. Fold up the cardboard so it makes half of a cube (as shown).
   7. Use the masking tape to stick the sides together.
  8. Using a thick paintbrush and one colour,
paint both the clay model and the half of the
     net of a cube.
  9. When the first colour is dry, use
the thin paintbrush to paint polka
dots on both of your models.
 10. When the second colour is dry, place
your model in the middle of your
     half-cube room and display.
