Engineering Standards: 1. Scope

The document outlines the Engineering Standard for residual magnetism inspection in ferrous engine parts, specifying acceptable limits and measurement procedures. It defines two groups of parts with maximum magnetism levels of 15 Gauss for Group A and 5 Gauss for Group B. Parts exceeding these limits must be demagnetized to meet acceptance criteria.

INSPECTION SPECIFICATION 16114

1. Scope
This standard applies to the limits of acceptance for residual magnetism found in ferrous engine
parts and shall apply to all ferrous parts listed below or whenever this inspection standard is
referenced within a Magnetic Particle Inspection Standard.
This specification shall not be used for new product fuel system components, use CES 16602.

2. Applicable Documents
Applicable documents listed below may be obtained from the respective organizations listed in
CES 10054, Standards Organizations Addresses.

a. 10054, Standards Organizations Addresses

b. 10056, Glossary

3. Definitions
There are no unique definitions in this standard. Terms used in this standard that have a general
definition for usage in Cummins Engineering Standards are defined in CES 10056, Glossary.

4. Specification
4.1. Equipment

4.1.1. Master

a. Bell Gaussmeter, Model 610 using internal standards.

b. Bell Gaussmeter, Model 110A and reference (calibration)
c. Magnets (supplied with equipment)
d. Denshujiki Co. Ltd. Gaussmeter, Model GM-340

4.1.2. Gage

4.1.2.1. Electromatic (Product Co.) Model (EMU Series residumeter and series UC100-1
residumeter comparator for calibration).

4.1.2.2. The gage or master mentioned above is to be used for all inspections with frequent
reference made to the appropriate master, noted above, for assurance of accurate measurements.

4.1.2.3. The gage or master reference (shall) be done through the use of reference magnets or
internal calibration (in the case of a gaussmeter) and via the comparator for residumeters.

4.2. Measurements

4.2.1. The above mentioned instruments measure magnetic field surrounding the part. This
magnetic field will vary considerably according to the position of the magnetic field in the part.
The limits of acceptance therefore refer to the maximum reading obtainable while scanning the
entire part with the gage point in contact with the part.

4.2.2. The Bell Gaussmeter readings are to be taken with the short transverse probe with the
small protective shield retracted. The probe is to be in contact with the part and wafer element
parallel to the surface of the part. Axial probe may be used where they prove to be easier to use and
better correlate to the EMU series meters.

4.2.2.1. Move in cautiously on the object being tested, be sure the pointer remains on scale.
Instruments should be kept a reasonable distance from heavily magnetized parts and
demagnetizing equipment. The movement could be rendered ineffective if the pointer is allowed
to go beyond full scale.

4.2.3. The Electromatic gage readings are to be taken with the case in contact with the surface
of the part. The gage contact area of the case is marked and is found below the hinge point of the
indicator needle.
4.2.4. When the meter is not in close proximity to the part, and oriented as it will be when in
contact with the part, note the position of the needle on the scale. This position should be
considered "zero" for purpose of reading the needle deflection to determine residual magnetism.

4.3. Limits Of Acceptance

4.3.1. Group A: (See Appendix A: Tables on page 4).

The maximum acceptable level of magnetism in Group A ferrous engine parts is 15 Gauss. This
corresponds to a gage reading of 15, or three divisions, on the Electromatic Gage, Model EMU-10,
for example.

4.3.2. Group B: (See Appendix A: Tables on page 4).

The maximum acceptable level of magnetism in Group B ferrous engine parts is 5 Gauss. This
corresponds to a gage reading of 5, or one division, on the Electromatic Gage, Model EMU-10 for
example.
