1 PURPOSE
In case of dispute the only valid reference is the original italian edition.
This test method makes it possible to assess the abrasion resistance of protective coatings for
use on the lower part of vehicles (underbody); said resistance is measured by the amount of
blasted metal grit necessary to cause a definite abrasion of the product under test, previously
applied on a steel panel.

2 TEST EQUIPMENT
2.1 It consists of a shaped metallic tube (see Figure 1), to which on the upper part are connected a fun-
nel−type container for metal grit and piping for compressed air; at 45 mm from the lower end a plane
is placed, inclined at 45° with respect to the tube axis, on which the test piece is set during the test.
The assembly is enclosed in a metallic chamber in order to avoid grit scatter.

3 TEST SPECIMENS
3.1 Prepare a specimen suitable to be arranged on test device. Specimen shape shall have at least a
portion of surface parallel to the inclined plane of the test device in order to allow the grit jet to strike
the surface with an angle of 45°.

4 TEST PROCEDURE
4.1 Put cast iron grit (of G−0.2 type, FIAT 9.50150) into the container and, after placing the specimen
coated with the product on the inclined plane, feed air at 0.3 to 0.4 MPa pressure through the piping.
By acting on the clip (Mohr’s clip) located under the funnel−type container, cause the grit to
strike the panel until the panel’s metal surface or any paint underlay first appears; then, weigh
the fallen grit with an accuracy of ± 5 g.
5 TEST RESULTS
5.1 The grit weight in g determined as described in point 4, divided by the thickness in mm of the product
applied on the steel panel, is taken as the “abrasion coefficient” and is expressed in g/mm.
6 QUOTED STANDARDS
