1 PURPOSE
To specify post-spray cycle scab corrosion test procedure applicable to pre-coated or bare
sheet metal of commercial vehicles and buses by accelerated laboratory test.
2 SCOPE
Test specimens shall consist of bare sheet metal or zinc plated sheet metal test pieces or test
parts painted according to the spray cycles in force for commercial vehicles and buses.
3 TEST APPARATUS
In case of dispute the only valid reference is the original Italian edition.
- Corrosion test chamber equipped to provide repetitive alternating cycles consisting of
humidification in brine followed by hot air drying. Test apparatus shall ensure test cycle
repeatability, without alterations to the test parameters specified for each phase (for test
parameters see para. 5.2.1).
- Supports for positioning specimens and/or test parts at a 15o angle to the vertical, made of
corrosion-free insulating material.
4 BRINE
Prepare a solution consisting of sodium chloride at 0.5 % in demineralized water, conductivity
< 10 mS/cm2.

5 MATERIAL
5.1 Test specimen preparation
5.1.1 Test specimens or test parts shall be protected on edges using e.g. vinyl adhesive masking
tape.
5.1.2 Cut two 1 mm wide identical cross grooves at right angles (Figure 1), on the test surface
Figure 1
5.1.3 Dip the test specimens in a jar containing brine as per para. 4, ensuring that the entire surface is
covered in brine, and allow to stand for 24 h at ambient temperature (23 $ 2 oC).
5.1.4 Remove the test specimens from the brine and place in the test chamber using the
appropriate supports. The surface to be evaluated shall face the top of the apparatus.
5.2 Test procedure
5.2.1 The test cycle consists of a humid phase, i.e. diffusion of the brine in the chamber through a
nozzle, immediately followed by hot air drying.
This test cycle, the parameters of which are listed in the table below, shall be repeated for the
number of hours specified in the relevant IVECO standards of the products and/or spray cycles
to be evaluated.
Cycle phases
Cycle parameters
Humid phase Drying phase
Sodium chloride concentration 0,5 % --
Brine spray pressure 0.6 - 1 bar --
Brine Ph value 6,0 - 6,5 --
Phase time 60 min. 40 min (D)
Test chamber temperature 55 $ 2 oC
Test chamber relative humidity 90 - 95 % 55 - 60 %
(D) The specified time consists of the following:
- 20 minutes for test apparatus to reach specified relative humidity
- 20 minutes dwell at specified relative humidity
5.2.2 At end of test, remove test specimens from chamber, rinse in demineralized water removing any
salt residues, pre-dry and introduce in drier.

6 EXPRESSION OF RESULTS
- Inspect test specimen surfaces for corrosion spots, blisters and paint film separations.
- After 10 days in the drier, strip the paint film from half the groove using non-corrosive paint
stripper and check for propagation of sub-surface corrosion from grooves, expressing the
result in mm of total propagation (sum of propagation on either side of groove). Note
average and maximum propagation obtained using the calculation formula specified in
paras. 6.1 and 6.2.
6.1 Normal propagation
Enter the reading as sum of the propagation on each side of the groove, minus the groove width
(1 mm).
6.2 Abnormal propagation
6.2.1 Max. propagation
Enter the sum of max. propagation on either side of the groove, again minus the groove with (1 mm).
6.3 Average propagation
Divide the groove in even areas (see Figure 1) and then calculate average propagation as per the
formula hereunder:
(L1s x l1) + (L1d x l1) + (L2s x l2) + (L2d x l2) + (L3s x l3) + (L3d x l3)
Pm =
I
Subtract groove width (1 mm) from the resulting value.
