Stock Option Plan
Stock options are an award granted by your employer that gives you the right to buy a specific number of your employer’s company stock at a set price during a
fixed period of time. At the end of the fixed period, the options will expire. If you want to use the options to purchase company stock, you must exercise them.
This means paying the set price per share and any taxes. Once purchased, the stock is deposited into a brokerage account where you can choose to hold or
sell to receive cash.
Based on your plan rules, you may have the ability to exercise and sell the option, often called a “Cashless Exercise”. This means exercising the option and
selling all of the resulting shares. The cost to exercise and any resulting taxes are covered by the cash you receive from selling the shares. You receive the
remaining net cash proceeds once the transaction is settled.
If you receive stock options, you may need to accept them depending on your specific plan rules. For more, see: Your award at a glance: Stock Options
