11 12 000 Removing and installing/sealing cylinder head
cover (N42/N46)
Necessary preliminary tasks:
Remove ignition coil cover.
Remove ignition coils.
Detach ignition coil wiring harness from cylinder head cover
and lay to one side.
E46 only
Remove heater bulkhead.
Carefully lift out cover (1).
Lay cable (2) to one side.
Press lock.
Pull off the hose for the engine breather.
Remove sealing element (1) for sensor.

Note:
Vacuum line is screwed to screw (1).
Screws (2 and 3) have different lengths.
Release all screws and remove cylinder head cover.
Remove spark plug domes (1) from cylinder (1 and 4).
Installation
Installation of cylinder head is described separately from removal.
Note:
The cylinder head cover and the gasket of the cylinder head cover
are made from a single material which adapts itself to the contour
of the cylinder head.
The gasket and the uncoupling elements of the screw connection
are matched to each other.
If the cylinder head cover was leaking, the fault can only be
rectified with a new cylinder head cover, new gasket and new
screw connections.
Note:
O-rings (1 and 2) are different.
Replace O-rings (1 and 2) on spark plug dome and coat with oil
as antiseize agent.

Install spark plug domes (1) on cylinder (1 and 4).
Important!
When fitting cylinder head cover:
Align spark plug domes (1) to cylinder head cover.
Cylinder head, front:
Remove all sealing remnants from sealing surfaces of cylinder
head.
Apply a thin, uniform bead of Drei Bond 1209 sealing agent
(refer to BMW Parts Service) to transition area of half-moon
sections.
Cylinder head, rear (exhaust side):
Note:
Illustration with engine removed.
Remove all sealing remnants from sealing surfaces of cylinder
head.
As illustrated, apply a sealing bead with Drei Bond 1209 (refer
to BMW Parts Service).
Cylinder head, rear (inlet side):
Note:
Illustration with engine removed.
Remove all sealing remnants from sealing surfaces of cylinder
head.
Apply a thin, uniform bead of Drei Bond 1209 sealing agent
(refer to BMW Parts Service) to transition area of half-moon
sections.

Note different version of screws (1 to 3).
Fit cylinder head cover and install all screws still without
pretension.
Replace sealing element (1) and coat sealing surface with oil as
antiseize agent.
Fit sealing element (1) and install screws still without pretension.
Make sure gasket is correctly seated on cylinder head at front.
Note:
Illustration with engine removed.
Make sure gasket is correctly seated on cylinder head at rear.
Align cylinder head cover.
Tighten down all screws in diagonal sequence from inside
outwards.
