Slide 1: Title Slide – "El Filibusterismo"

“Good day! Today, We will be discussing El Filibusterismo, the second novel by our national
hero, Dr. José Rizal.

• This novel is a powerful sequel to Noli Me Tangere, and it dives deeper into the themes
of revenge, social injustice, and revolution.

• “El Filibusterismo, or The Reign of Greed in English, was published in 1891 in Ghent,
Belgium. Just like Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo was written in Spanish.

• It reflects Rizal’s peaceful reform to a more intense, exposing the greed and corruption
of the Spanish regime in the Philippines.”

Before we jump in, lets have a quick summary of the chapter that we are about to
explore.

Slide 3: Summary

• “Thirteen years after Noli Me Tangere, Crisostomo Ibarra returns to the Philippines under
the alias Simoun, now a wealthy merchant.

• Instead of reform, he now believes in revolution. He uses his influence to spark a

rebellion.”

• During a visit to Sisa’s grave, Basilio, discovers Simoun’s identity. Though offered to join
the revolution, Basilio refuse, still hoping for peaceful change.”

Now that we have a good idea of the big picture, lets breakdown what really happens in
this chapter

Slide 5: Basilio’s Journey

• “Basilio, once poor and orphaned, and now a medical student in Ateneo, supported by
Capitan Tiago.

• Basilio tries to protect Capitan Tiago from his opium addiction.”

• Opium is a highly addictive non-synthetic narcotic

• Opium is made from Opium Poppy, just like Marijuana with a fair share of medical usage
like pain killers, alleviate diarrhea and induce anesthesia.

Slide 6: Student Reforms

• “Basilio and other students push for a Spanish language academy to be better equipped
for the future.

• As per my research, During the Education Decree of 1863, Spanish became mandatory
subject before. They removed spanish from curriculum after the American colonization
and they introduced English.

• Spanish was stopped being a required subject in the philippines with the 1987
constitution. Around 1990s most school dropped it as mandatory subject.

• Just a quick fun fact about spanish language

• Although Don Custodio approves it, they are only allowed to be caretakers, not teachers.

• Frustrated, they hold a mock celebration in a pancitería, unknowingly being watched by

a friar’s spy.”

Slide 7: Kabesang Tales & Simoun

• “Simoun works with bandits led by Kabesang Tales (TELESFORO JUAN DE DIOS a
former cabeza de barangay ).

• Simoun uses Quiroga to smuggle weapons for the revolution.”( DON TIMOTEO
QUIROGA ), a Chinese businessman,

To give you an idea, this is just a quick glimpse of the topic that the next reporter will
discuss in more detail.

Slide 8: Revolution Plan

• Simoun plans an attack during a stage play, where all his enemies would be gathered.

• Simoun, cancels the plan upon learning that María Clara has died.

• Meanwhile, students are wrongly accused of rebellion, and Basilio is arrested, although
he wasn’t at the event.”

Slide 9: Julî’s Death / Juliana De Dios the Daughter of Telesforo Juan De Dios / Kabesang
Tales

• “Julî, Basilio’s girlfriend, tries to get help from Father Camorra petitioning him for help
with Basilio, but she got assaulted.

• She choose death over dishonor, she jumps off a balcony. Because of this Basilio finally
agrees to join Simoun’s revolution.”
Slide 10: Final Bomb Plot
• “At the wedding of Paulita Gómez and Juanito Pelaez, Simoun hides a bomb inside a
lamp.

• Basilio warns his friend Isagani, who throws the lamp into the river saving lives but
ruining the revolution.

Slide 11: Simoun’s End

“Simoun is wounded and becomes a fugitive.

He hides in Father Florentino’s house and takes poison to avoid arrest. Before dying, he
confesses his identity and reflects on the failure of his revolution.”
