“Spreading Smiles: Iftar with the Orphans”
Personal Background & Family Situation
During our visit to Mera Ghar, we observed that the majority of the children residing there
were girls. This highlighted a common societal issue in Pakistan, where daughters are often
less preferred due to cultural stereotypes. Many of the girls we met were siblings from the same
families—some as many as five or six sisters—indicating that their families could not afford
to raise them due to financial struggles. Another major reason for their presence in the
orphanage was that they had been orphaned, left without guardians, or abandoned due to
extreme poverty. It was heartbreaking to learn that some of these children had living relatives,
but due to economic constraints or social pressures, they had been left at Mera Ghar for better
care.
Emotional & Psychological Well-being
Despite their circumstances, the children at Mera Ghar appeared happy and well-cared for.
They were cheerful, energetic, and eager to interact with us. We engaged in various games and
activities with them, and their active participation reflected a positive environment where they
felt safe and valued. Although there may be underlying emotional struggles, the warm and
nurturing atmosphere of the orphanage seemed to help the children maintain a sense of
normalcy and happiness.
Educational Opportunities & Learning Environment
One of the most encouraging observations was that all the children at Mera Ghar were
receiving quality education. They attended Global School and College, which is known as a
reputable educational institution in the area. Through our interactions, we noticed that the
children were well-spoken, confident, and demonstrated a strong grasp of their studies. Their
ability to answer questions and engage in meaningful conversations was a testament to the
quality of education they were receiving.
Physical Health & Nutrition
The overall health condition of the children appeared to be good. They looked healthy, active,
and well-nourished, and we did not notice any visible signs of malnutrition or illness. The
orphanage ensures that the children receive proper meals and medical care when needed, which
has helped maintain their well-being. It was reassuring to see that their basic physical needs
were being met adequately.
Daily Routine & Recreational Activities
The children at Mera Ghar followed a structured daily routine. On weekdays, they attended
school, and after returning, they had dedicated time for sports and physical activities. In the
evenings, they participated in spiritual and educational classes that focused on personal growth
and development. Weekends were special for them, as various visitors, like our group, would
come to interact with them. This routine not only kept them engaged but also helped them
develop essential life skills.
Social & Emotional Support System
The caregivers and staff at Mera Ghar played a vital role in providing emotional support to the
children. They acted as parental figures, guiding them and ensuring that they felt safe and loved.
Additionally, the presence of volunteers and visitors created opportunities for the children to
connect with people outside the orphanage, fostering a sense of community and belonging. It
was evident that the staff was dedicated to their well-being, making efforts to create a positive
and nurturing environment.
Religious & Moral Development
Religious and moral education was an essential part of the children's upbringing at Mera Ghar.
They attended regular classes focusing on Islamic teachings and ethical values. We even asked
them some religious questions, and it was impressive to see that even the younger children had
a strong understanding of Islamic principles. This aspect of their education played a crucial
role in helping them develop a sense of gratitude, discipline, and moral integrity.
Future Aspirations & Career Hopes
During our conversations, we asked the children about their dreams and ambitions. Many of
them expressed a keen interest in professions like joining the army, becoming police officers,
or pursuing careers in teaching. Their enthusiasm and ambition were inspiring, showing that
they had high aspirations despite their circumstances. It was heartening to see that they had
hopes for a bright future and were being encouraged to work toward their goals.
Challenges & Unmet Needs
Although Mera Ghar provides a safe and nurturing environment, there are still challenges that
the children face. The biggest difficulties include the emotional longing for family, limited
resources for extracurricular activities, and the need for more mentorship programs. While they
receive good education and care, providing additional skill development programs, career
counseling, and social opportunities could further enhance their growth. More support in terms
of educational materials, mentorship, and emotional guidance could help bridge these gaps.
Conclusion
Our visit to Mera Ghar was an eye-opening experience that allowed us to better understand the
lives of these children. While they have been provided with a supportive environment, good
education, and proper care, there are still areas where they need more attention and assistance.
The warmth and happiness we witnessed were truly inspiring, and it reinforced the importance
of initiatives that support orphaned and abandoned children. By continuing to engage with such
organizations and offering our support, we can contribute to improving their lives and helping
them build a better future.
