1. Purpose
The purpose of this procedure is to provide a guideline to find out the Ferrite Content in the weld of austenitic
stainless steel and Duplex austenitic-ferrite stainless steel material to perform the test as per applicable codes,
standards and client requirements.
2. Scope
2.1. This procedure describes the method for performing ferrite content test according to magnetic induction method
by using Ferrite scope as per project specification. Ferrite measurement applies to Austenitic stainless steels
and Duplex austenitic-ferrite stainless steel material, Super Duplex/ Duplex & Stainless Steel Material.
2.2. Definition
2.2.1. Delta Ferrite:The ferrite formed from the molten state upon freezing.
2.2.2. Ferrite Number:An arbitrary standardized value designating the ferrite content of austenitic/ duplex
stainless steel weld metal.
2.2.3. Primary standards:Specimens with accurate thickness of non-magnetic material on a carbon steel base
plate containing 0.25% carbon maximum. Each primary standard is assigned a FN of an equivalent
magnetic weld metal, this assigned value being specific to particular type of Ferrite scope.
2.2.4. Weld Metal Second standards: Small weld metal pads certified for FN in a manner traceable to these
standard procedure.
2.2.5. Ferrite content:The percentage or amount of ferrite content embedded in the Austenitic stainless steel
and Duplex austenitic-ferrite stainless steel material.
3. References

3.6. Operating manual of Fischer’s Ferrite scope FMP30 Instrument.
4. Personnel Qualification
➢ All personnel performing and reporting the results of the ferrite content test should be well experienced and
conversant with operational technique of the instrument. They shall know the applicable standard or
specifications with operating instructions of instrument and report preparation.
➢ Operator records confirming such training, qualification and experience shall be submitted to inspection
organization review and approval.
5. Equipment & Materials
5.1. Equipment used shall Helmut Fisher GmbH, Model (Feritscope FMP30) with display the measurement reading
shall be in % and FN.
5.2. Probe FGAB1.3-Fe.
➢ machine demonstration required before start the activities.
6. Surface Preparation
Surface Preparation follows AWS A4.2 Section 8.2 requirements:
a) Weld ripples & other surface irregularities are removed by draw filing with a sharp, clean 350mm Mill Bastard file
held perpendicular to the long axis of the weld & made smooth (stroke in one direction)
b) For any FN values above 20, use a 600-grit abrasive as needed
c) Surface prep is accomplished without cross contamination by ferromagnetic materials.
d) Cleaning Equipment (Abrasive tools, files, discs, etc.) are color-coded & marked for their specific metallurgical
use. They are not used on Carbon Steel or any other grade of Stainless-Steel Material.

7. Calibration Requirements
Calibration shall be done by a third party in periods not exceeding 6 months.
Before actual measurements are made, the equipment shall be verified with the calibration standard blocks provided
with known percentage of ferrite content. The steps for calibration shall be as follows.
7.1. Choose the calibration blocks which cover both ends of the expected measurement range.
7.2. Press ZERO to start the normalization of the open application, ZERO appears and remains on the LCD display
while the normalization is performed. Now press CAL to start the corrective calibration of the open application.
7.3. At least five measurements are taken at different location of each calibration block and noted. Average of these
5 readings is taken as the actual measurement. The measurement should be within + 5% of the ferrite content
marked on the block.
7.4. Press ENTER once the readings for calibration are completed.
7.5. Calibration checks shall be done every 4 hours as well as when there is any change in Operator.
8. Procedure
8.1. General Instructions
8.1.1. Measurements are done by placing the probe on the dry, clean and grease free area. At least 5 reading
are noted in each weld.
8.1.2. Check for the presence of stray magnetic field, which might influence the reading by holding the probe
in air and note down if any Ferrite content is display.
8.1.3. Always hold the probe at its gripe sleeve, and always place the probe gently and at right angle on the
specimen surface.
8.2. Testing Steps
8.2.1. A suitable measurement probe must be connected to the instrument when the instrument is off.
8.2.2. Ensure that suitable batteries have been placed and switch the unit ON by pressing ON/OFF key. A
monitoring routine will run automatically. All display elements of the LCD display will appear briefly at
the same time. To turn OFF the instrument press the ON/OFF key again. The instrument shuts down
automatically if not measurements are taken or the instrument remains idle for 5 minutes.
8.2.3. Press ZERO after switching ON the instrument to set the new application/program. The display should
be showing 0.00. Press the ENTER key and select the unit of measurement %Fe or FN.
8.2.4. Always hold the probe at its grip sleeve. Place the probe gently and at right angle on the specimen
surface. With the default setting a beep will signal the measurement capture. Lift the probe OFF the
specimen before making the next measurement.
➢ Actual measurements are done by placing the probe gently but firmly on dry, clean and grease free
area. At least five readings are noted in each weld.
➢ Presence of stray magnetic fields, which might influence the reading, must be checked regularly
by holding the probe in the air and observe any reading of ferrite content.
9. Acceptance Criteria
9.1. Austenitic stainless steels:
9.1.1. Ferrite content for austenitic stainless steels, except type 310, shall include a determination of the
Ferrite Number in the as-welded condition. The Ferrite Number shall be between 3 and 10 FN.
9.1.2. For production welds, the ferrite content shall be checked in the as-welded condition. The Ferrite
Number shall be between 3 and 10 FN.
9.2. Duplex Stainless Steels:
9.2.1. Ferrite content of the weld metal shall be measured, unless the weld metal is nickel-based. The ferrite
range must be within 35 to 60%.
9.2.2. Minimum ferrite content should be 50% for services that have potential for chloride stress cracking.

9.2.3. Production Welding: The ferrite content of completed welds shall be checked in accordance with AWS
A4.2. It shall be within the range of 30 to 60% ferrite using the appropriate Ferrite Number (FN) based
on the correlation established by the PQR measurements.
➢ If reading of a location is outside the ferrite content, two additional readings shall be taken near the first
measurement point. If the two additional readings are within the acceptable FCT range, additional surface
preparation shall be performed on first measuring point and measurement repeated.
➢ If the reading comes within the acceptable FCT range, the joint shall be accepted.
➢ If either of the additional location reading is outside the acceptable FCT range, the joint shall be rejected.
➢ All rejected weld shall be documented and rectified
