Title:
Experiments to determine the conditions for germination of seeds.
Aim:
To determine the required conditions for the germination of seeds.
Problem statement:
Are air, water and suitable temperature necessary for seeds to germinate?
Hypothesis:
Seed needs air, water and suitable temperature to germinate.
Variables:
a) Constant variable: Type of seed
b) Manipulated variable: Germination conditions
c) Responding variable: Seed germination
Materials and apparatus:
Boiling tube, cotton wool, water, cooking oil, sugar paper, green beans and refrigerator.
Procedure:
                                                                              Figure 1 (a)
                                                                              Figure 1 (b)
1) Four boiling tubes labelled A, B, C and D was prepared as shown in Figure 1 (a) and
   Figure 1 (b).
2) Test tube A, B and C were put in the laboratory while test tube D was put inside a
   refrigerator.
3) All the seeds were observed after five days for each of the boiling tube.
4) Observation was recorded in a table.
Result:
                           Presence of Seed germination

          D ✓ ✓ Does not germinate
Discussion:
Seed needs air, water and suitable temperature to germinate. Test tube A act as a control
experiment which contain air, water and suitable temperature for seeds to germinate. The
purpose of using cooking oil in test tube C is to prevent air from entering the test tube.
Conclusion:
Hypothesis is accepted. Seed needs air, water and suitable temperature to germinate.
