CONTENT
Meaning of fabric decoration
Fabric decoration is the act of creating designs with color on plain fabric. This is with the
intention of making the fabric look more beautiful and attractive. Tie and dye
Tie and dye is a fabric decoration technique that is common in Abeokuta,Ogun State,
Nigeria. It is a process of creating a dye-resist area in a fabric before soaking it in a solution
of dye. Tie and dye designs can be simple or complex. They can be of a single color
(monochrome), or multicolored. The extent to which the design is complex is determined
by the creativity and experience of the artist.
Other techniques of fabric decoration include printing, embroidery, painting, and appliqué.

Methods of decorating fabric by tie and dye

The basic essence of tie and dye is to create some parts of the fabric that will resist dye
during the dying process. This can be achieved by the following methods:
1. Folding: This is the act of folding the fabric into different shapes; then using a twine to
tie it together, so as to keep it in position.
2. Tying: This involves the tying of stones, buttons or marbles of different sizes into the
fabric; then using strings to hold them together. After doing this, it is ready for dyeing.
3. Twisting and coiling: This method involves twisting the fabric very tight, either by one
or two persons; then, tying it in various places with strings.
4. Marbling: This is the method of crumpling the fabric until it is smaller and forms a
tight ball; then, tying it very tightly with strings.
5. Stamping: This is the method of applying fabric paint to a stamp, and then placing it on
the fabric. The paint is then left to dry up.
Materials needed for making tie and dye
The production of tie and dye fabric requires the following materials:
• Fabric (this should preferably be white, and 100% cotton)
