WE ARE
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) provides independent, evidence-based knowledge and
science, supporting EU policies to positively impact society.
The current vacancy is in the Sustainable Smart and Safe Mobility Unit of the Directorate for
Energy, Mobility and Climate.
The Sustainable Smart and Safe Mobility Unit supports the development and implementation
of European policies and legislation in the field of mobility.
In particular, the Unit is involved in the market surveillance task introduced by Regulation
2018/858. This regulation mandates the in use compliance verification of vehicles and
components with the applicable legislative requirements.
Specifically, the JRC is the European Commission’s service in charge of physical testing of
vehicles in order to verify that the selected vehicles comply with the applicable regulations.
The jobholder will contribute to the market surveillance activity as mandated by Regulation
2018/858 by taking the responsibility of a wide range of tasks

WE PROPOSE
The jobholder will contribute to the selection of the vehicles to be tested for the in use
compliance verification on the basis of a specific risk assessment, to the design, planning and
follow up of the necessary testing campaigns to be carried out either on the road or in the
laboratory, to the validation and analysis of the results. The outcome of the in use compliance
verification tests will be published in a publicly available report. The jobholder will also
contribute to the implementation of the ISO 17020/17025 norms. The market surveillance
activity has also a research dimension linked to the development of new tests and

methodologies to improve its efficiency/effectiveness and to adapt it to the technological
progress. Contributing to the scientific output of the Unit is also expected.

WE LOOK FOR
We look for a candidate with a strong interest in innovations related to transport and motor
vehicles, with a good aptitude in taking initiative, developing new concepts and with excellent
capacity to integrate and work in an existing well performing multinational and multicultural
team. Reliability, capacity to maintain confidentiality, communicate in a clear and concise
manner, together with strong problem-solving capabilities as well as meticulousness and
attention for the details are an essential asset to the job.
The ideal candidate shall have completed university studies in
mechanical/mechatronic/automotive engineering or in a similar field. A Ph.D, or at least 5
years of proven relevant research or working experience after the first degree giving access
to doctoral studies, is an important advantage.

At least one year experience in measuring exhaust emissions/fuel consumption or vehicle


performance in general, as well as of data collection and analysis technique is considered
essential. Deep understanding of vehicle technologies including emission control systems,
would be desirable.

Knowledge of requirements for ISO 17025 accreditation of emission tests would be desirable.
Knowledge of different emission analysis techniques as well as of software typically used for
managing emission measuring equipment/facilities as well as for the emission assessment is
an asset.

Good knowledge of spoken and written English (minimum C1 level) is required.
