Children’s Ministry Week Presentation: 13 May 2025 ‘Topic: The purpose of families and what the Bibles say about families Definitions of terms: Purpose - The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. An ideal famil An ideal family can be defined as a unit that provides love, support and stability to its members. It is a family where each member feels valued, respected and understood. (https://lifecounsellingorlando.com) In the Bible, a family is a group of people related to one another through marriage, birth or adoption. This reflects the connection with our relatives (extended family). The Bible views a family as a divinely ordained institution created by God and intended to reflect His image (mhuri inofanirwa kuratidza HuMweri hwaMwari mumararamiro ayo). The purpose of families The primary purpose of families in society is to ensure continuation of society, both biologically through procreation and socially through socialisation. 1. Procreation Families are responsible for raising children, ensuring the continuation of the human species. Genesis 1:28 ..... be fruitful and increase in number 2. Socialization Families provide a sense of belonging and identity to their members, helping them develop a sense of who they are and where they fit in the world. They socialize children by teaching them the values, beliefs and norms of society, preparing them to become productive members of society. Emotional and Practical support Families provide emotional support to their members, offering love, care and ‘encouragement during times of joy and hardship. They are called to demonstrate love, kindness and compassion towards one another. Shaping Values and Beliefs “Charity begins at Home”. Shaping of character and instilling good home. Unconditional love also starts in families. Family members are: love one another. Families teach children about right and wrong and help them develop a sense of moral responsibility, ‘What the Bible say about families The Bible emphasizes the family’s role in nurturing children, providing a safe and stable environment, and passing on of values and traditions. The Bible gives guidance and principles that help parents to raise children in a loving and godly way. Parents must demonstrate godly behaviour and values for children to follow. Families play a crucial role in passing on their faith to future generations. (Psalm 78:4; 2 Timothy 1:5). They are responsible for teaching children God's ways, values and morals {Deuteronomy 6: 4-9) Families are to prioritize values such as honesty, integrity and compassion and to pass these values to future generations (Proverbs 22:1; 6) The Bible promotes healthy family relationships, emphasizing love, forgiveness and communication (Ephesians 4:32; Ephesians 5:1-2). The Bible is clear on how families should function. The following Bible verses addresses the various relationships within families: > Ephesians 5: 22 -24 wife and husband relationship > Ephesians 6: 1-4 addresses child- parent relationship Colossians 3:18-25 clearly point out Rules for Christian Households Apostle Paul addressed all of us in our respective capacities. The instructions are for ‘everyone. As Christians it is our duty to uphold the Bible principles and let the Love of God (agape love) flow in our families.
